Mystery Ranch Metcalf: HONEST Pack Review

I'm sure you all are wondering what pack you need to get for your elk or back country hunts! Maybe you're here to see if this pack would be good for your long trek across the trails into wilderness and back. Well this pack review will for sure answer those questions and if it doesn't, I know I can so comment below.

I really like mine! I'm partial to MR as a wildland firefighter and our packs are MR. Best pack I've used on fires. So naturally I gravitated towards them when looking for a multi day hunting pack. I loved that you could cinch it down for a 1 day pack and antelope hunting in SD showed that well. It was also nice to expand the pack to haul out your kill. I can do an whole antelope or deer in my pack. It's heavy but rides well and is completely doable. I did elk quarters with my old pack and I feel this one would be no problem for elk quarters. I haven't got to back country hunt yet but I feel this would be a good starting point to try out! My gut tells me it will be just fine for a 5-8 day hunt in the backcountry.

Honestly this is a perfect pack for that. 5-8 days this is just right in that ball park. Thank you for your work on wildland fires! Your efforts are appreciated and I respect the heck out of you for being able to do that work. I really feel like the expanding and cinching of this pack is what makes it so invaluable. It really does a lot without feeling like a lot on you.

I'm looking at M.R. packs due to my experience with the wildfire packs as well! Our wildland packs could take some abuse!

Honestly my pack looks brand new. The other gear I also wore while using this pack doesn’t. So I think the abuse level is legit

I’ve run the bear tooth 2 seasons now and this metcalf is just a more compact feel to me. Love them both! Glad you agree!

I just bought a Metcalf. I was super excited but a little underwhelmed... Think I'm returning it for a SG solo. 2 Main things for me. I hate the way the shoulder straps ride on me personally. (SG packs you can widen them) but over everything. I hate hate hate that if I need to crawl with the pack on. The frame blocks me from lifting my head. I can adjust this so that frame rides lower but then it's improperly fitted to me. Maybe it's just me but that's my review.

I actually understand the lifting your head part. I value the fit of this frame more but totally understand. I love throwing my ball cap on backwards at times so it still catches sweat but I can see more. The frame makes that harder. But overall I loved the pack. I haven’t tried a Stone Glacier yet, but I’m sure I’ll get one and review it. Let me know how you like it

Check out a company called crossfire they make military packs but they’re like no other. I just sold a mystery ranch popup 38 for a dg3 and the frame system and shoulder pads blow the mystery ranch pack out of the water. Good bang for the Buck.
