Fun fact, Gran Turismo 3 was meant to be a launch title for the PS2, but Polyphony Digital's initial version of the game was said to have controlled so poorly that they delayed it, hence why the game has the "A-Spec" subtitle. There's also I wanna say ~3 cancelled launch games for the console that never went out of alpha.

I REMEMBER the PS2 launch DISTINCTLY. I have never wanted a new console SO BADLY and didn’t get one until a few months AFTER it launched. But anyway, I remember their being sentiment at the time from the “gaming media” that the PS2 launch library “wasn’t all that” because it was “lacking a Mario 64-style killer app.” Which is kinda crazy in retrospect because I think PS2 had one of the BETTER launches. They had a game for just about every kind of genre, even if it wasn’t like “10/10 GOTY material.” Plus, SSX, TimeSplitters, Tekken Tag Tournament, and Dynasty Warriors 2 were ENOUGH to keep me and my friends content and occupied for MONTHS.

I worked at a restaurant in my town and was friends with the owners son when the PS2 came out. Of course he got it on day one, I was so jealous! I did get one for Xmas that year so I never suffered that long. I still have the first few games I ever bought for it. My favorites were Silent Hill 2 and The Bouncer.

30:58 There are actually quite a lot of bike games nowadays. It's just a niche genre, so you don't hear much about it. RIDE 5, MotoGP 24, MXGP 24, SBK 22, Monster Energy Supercross 6 and TT Isle of Man 3 are all PS5 games that are part of ongoing bike racing franchises.

I remember my launch PS2 experience. And in my area if you wanted to buy this console at launch we were forced to buy 3 games with it. Mine was Smugglers Run, NBA Live 99, and DOA2. DOA2 was the first fighting game I played where you can't block. There was no console scalping back then, but that didn't stop those retailers from taking advantage of us gamers.

I find the launch games from this and the next generation to be very fascinating. The final two generations to have big leaps in fidelity and graphical techniques. These "transition" games are very unique and cool. Edit: I think this is also why the Dreamcast and 3do are so interesting to me as well. Those consoles' entire libraries were basically "transition" titles.

Glad you both liked TimeSplitters to 😎 I loved all 3 of them 👍 + this reminded me of the old days going around my friends house & playing all his games(he bought everything which was nuts) :D & I had to play some complete trash to(but luckily there were some gems in that pile of trash thank god that i bought after for my PS2. Good look at all these in person gives perspective for sure. I was impressed by the Armoured Core 2 FMV looks good. D-pad wow I thought many were used to or moving to the sticks by then even. Like some L2/R2 for camera was still a thing and right stick was for dodging like God of War or item use like Pitfall Lost Expedition, not always camera but wow d-pad on PS2 as primary for some.games is interesting never knew that. I likr Battle Engine Aquila and found Front Mission Evolved or Zone of Enders 2 interesting. DOA for sure was always impressive in this generation. That snow compared to 3 on Xbox though too. Track and Field for PS2 hmm. Its something. Easy to navigate menus lol. I mean sure. Pretty weak menu. That music hmm. I think fair sequels but fair new stuff too. Evergrace s well as Cookie and Cream always seemed cool to me. It's why I think their tactics game on PS3/360 was fair, silly but fun even id some of its time elements of other JRPGs that are turn based. But Eternal Ring seems like Kings Field I assume. From Software for sure at that LS2 launch with a lot of games out its a lot of experimentation. Run explosion, that was good. Yeah Fantavision what a game. Something different, particle effects for sure ots impressive but yeah, good FMV good music, reminds me of Boom Boom Rocket but earlier. The particles in Ratchet to customise in the museum hmm. Ah Working Designs game hmm. Holographic box art are when they did those ans fhe few that do now like what Psychonauts 2 I think. Fair ah right stick hmm. Looks fair of a mech game. Kind of gives me Body Harvest vibes or Blast Corp but first person or the Atari Jaguar mech game. Fair Madden. The animations and characters are interesting. Ah Midnight Club as Driving Emotion Type S was later in US but launch in Japan hmm what a game. Yeah devs were trying. The details were early for sure, them getting there. Oh MotoGP1 was a launch title in US huh interesting. I enjoy MotoGP3 and it's content, they are fair games. Ah Orphan Cypher yep its a fair game. But heard it's dialogue before. Some nice AV cable menu, some good billiards clearly. Always heard of ready to rumble never played, looks fine for an arcade boxing game. Ridge Racer for sure, FMV, great arcade racing for sure. Silent Scope without a VMU hmm to scope (Dreamcast). Smugglers Run is fine for objective based driving game/racing. I enjoy the second game don't own the first. Uh Gta1&2 on PS1 i mean thry had a lot to change up for 3 clearly not just cameta angle. I don't think thr lqunch titles are bad. I'd play some of these. Launch titles are never the best titles, but I also don't care for the best titles either. I didn't cqre for Liberty City Stories on PSP controlled likr garbage, eh dialogue, sure fine open world but found it really boring and unappealing. Couldn't care less it's a city created, I care about fiction and gameplay being video game expansive for movesets, level design not receations of reality for casuals woth no imagination and haedcore ok woth the odd stuff like it. I find them boring. Games and engines can be so much unrealted to reality, yet we have games for boring people with no imagination to recreate their familiarity of reality with quality of life to smooth things out wow what a jump, it's boring. Basic give it to me arcade or enough depth not skill trees, so many menus so much reality or cinematic with quality of life boredom and boring mechanics, simple or complex woth variety we may not all like or straightforward but good, graphics who cates fhe gameplay is better in older games, experimentation, nah modern gaming sucks. So boring of implementation when the past regardless of d-pad than stick still experimental mechanics and level design. Not heavily inspired, nostalgia or safe boring games. Give me old games I've never heard of any day over modern day garbage Indies or AAA/AA that don't even try anymore. Games took time. Graphics sure but its what they do. PS1 dif a lot even besides pre rendered. They tried as new to 3D for sure. Jak games are ok, Sly was boring has rhe personality but hate the gameplay, Ratchet I enjoy but I mean do you mean the personality or the gameplay, the characters, the worlds. Or childhood if so then even more nah. I have childhood with Jak/Ratchet but I am still critical of what they offer. Fair SSX footage. Fair Street Fighter. Got to have some Chun Li. Yep heard of The Summoner never played. Seen it before. Fair golf. Yeah Tekken for sure gave a better impression here and the tag swap in characters made more sense. Never played but see the appeal. Then again I care more for Death By Degrees type game. Timesplitters at launch wow. Unreal Tournament being that slow is odd and also no online but Dreamcast was or thinking Quake on Dreamcast. Quake is faster, very early and slow hmm. Wild Wild Racing is fine. X Squad interesting, not sure if sren ot before. Thinking a PS1 game that's different I think. Tricky. I'd say Ridge Racer 5, MotoGP and Time Splitters but if different thrn Unreal Tournament, Dead or Alive, Smugglers Run, or X Squad or Evergrace. Fair stuff.
