Hi Dannie.. Got a quick question for you. Me and my wife just bought some artificial lights for our orchids. They have several different settings. Which would be best for phalaenopsis orchids.. White Lights, Warm white + Red Lights, or All Lights?

On the question of whether to supplement magnesium at all, a lot of places in the US get their municipal water supplies from groundwater sources that lie in or beneath huge limestone formations. That means that tap water already has a lot of both calcium and magnesium in them, unless people are using reverse osmosis or distilled water on their orchids. Basically, if you live where the tap water is "hard" then you're highly unlikely to need magnesium supplementation. Great video!

Dehumidifier: using a TDS metre (total dissolved salts) on water collected from a dehumidifier gives a reading almost exactly the same as for using RO (reverse osmosis) water. It is the dissolved salts in the water (for example tap water) that really affects orchids especially when you are adding fertilizers to water as those are also salts in most cases. Pollutants in the air of a home would be virtually negligible in the water that was removed by a dehumidifier as it is designed to remove moisture, nothing more.

Pretty excited she addressed my question! I did try it out for about 3-4 months. The water came from my dehumidifier in my basement, which read between 5-10 ppm. My tap water reads 428 ppm 😮. My home was built in 1894, so the basement walls are thick cobblestone. No fertilizers we’re used during those 3-4 months. What I observed: what appeared to be either salt residue/buildup or the start of mold spores. Nevertheless, winter came around which ended the experiment due to the overall dryness. Finally broke down and invested in a nice RO unit 😊 Everything is now bursting with life!

I also did a dehumidifier experiment, and results were mixed. I didn’t have any plants that died when I used it, but I stopped using it when some of the gallons of dehumidifier water developed strings of slime mold and that grossed me out too much, so I thought I’d pour out thosejugs but still use the others that were still clear. Then I started to notice some kind of odor that made me stop the experiment, and I had some roots turn blackened at the top of the soil like what you see with salt burns or water just too acid. Btw, the jugs were previously purchased with distilled water, and after I used it I capped it, so the contamination wasn’t from the jugs…I still have about 70 gallons of that water stored in the basement, down from about 110 saved during a humid midwest US summer.

i cut the crowns of monopodial orchids so i can produce a lot of keikis, and you can add some rootex to the crown and it will survive as well. Phals are very expensive here in Guatemala and this is the cheapest way to porpagate them. I havent seen anyone doing this, but it works, you should try it. I have a video about that but it is in spaish :(

Happy New Year Danni!! Since following you I have learned so much about Orchids since I was just introduced to Orchids in April 2022 when I received a Phalaenopsis Orchid for my birthday. It arrived in a 4 inch glass container with white flowers, so beautiful. The flowers finally fell off but the Orchid was in bloom for some time. In late October early November I noticed two spikes growth and as of today, 1 January 2023 one of the spikes has five buds and the other spike has three buds with one tiny bud growing from a node with five air roots growing from the medium which are quite long. The six leaves are nice and green and the roots looks healthy since I can see through the glass container. I water with distilled water once a weeks and since the glass container has no drainage holes I just turn the container upside down and lightly press on the medium to drain excess water. My question is should I repot since the container has no drainage or airflow holes or should I wait until the Orchid blooms and flowers have dropped? I do not want to kill her. She seems to be doing well. If I should repot, when should I and what size pot?

Hi! I have a couple questions/myth ideas that I haven’t been able to find answers to. 1. What affects leaf mottling patterns? Is it solely genetics or does the environment affect it? I’ve been curious about this since each leaf of an orchid has different mottling and sometimes you’ll see a leaf that is half mottled and half solid. 2. Does light intensity affect flower colors? For example, a flower that was historically bright pink in high light outdoors is now paler pink in less intense sun indoors. Thanks!

I have a question. All orchids we have are getting yellow flower buds. It doesn't matter if we bought them or they got new buds after months of having them. They just don't really grow and open. Just turn yellow and fall of. Most of them have great leaves and roots so i don't get what the problem is.

I’m in the process of saving an orchid collection that was badly damaged. Whenever I water I am watering into repot me pots that are slotted and I like to let them sit for about 15 minutes till my medium gets nice and moist but I have a problem. I don’t have a cute outside pot that Doesn’t drain to let it soak in and I was wondering where you get those. I am currently using pots and pans in a bucket in large cups and it’s not pretty then I put them into decorative containers that have drainage so I have a repot my pot inside a decorative container that has drainage, but it would be so much easier if they were sitting in a secondary pot that didn’t have drainage. Any tips from you or any other viewers would be greatly appreciated.

So, I'm not sure if this can be considered something to debunk if it's a myth or truth, but there is something I'd like to get your advice on. I've had an orchid that's naturally white with purple spots since I think... 2016 or 2017, one of my relatives got as a gift on the day we lost one of our relatives many years ago and I've been caring for it in their absence, since they couldn't bring the pot with them back to Europe. Over the years, the bottom of the orchid has gotten quite long (and very dried up.) that whenever it's time to repot it every year, I'm sometimes finding it sticking the underside out or often it tilts itself out, and a lot of the bottom looks super dry over years of growth. I want to know if it's fine to cut just a little bit of the bottom portion to a degree. (Of course not too close to the living tissue.) or not. None of my other orchids have a super long bottom like this one particular I have, but it would help greatly to get a question (or a debunk) to this! I'm sure you've had some orchids where over the years of growth, you'd also find them having a long dried up stem/crown at the bottom. ...Apologies if I might've not worded it right, I'm better at showing pictures to explain. ^^;

Don’t you think a flush with Epsom salt solution would be beneficial to orchids, as it helps flush out fertiliser buildup in the media & root ball?
@MissOrchidGirl2 жыл бұрын
Hi, no I don't, it's not acidic, it is described as neutral in pH, so it cannot disolve and help flush salt build ups efficiently. I cannot find any scientific explanation on why it would be capable of doing that better than an acid (like vinegar, or lemon juice, or other 'mild' acids), or even just plain water, so I'll lable it as another myth people throw around cos others say so 😊 plus.. magnesium builds up too 😵💫

Myth or truth: If catasetum orchids (eg: monnierara) don't shed their leaves during winter, it means that you have to continue watering them as usual .
