Why would you re-introduce Jamie's smell to Jamie after having worked so hard to remove it? I don't think it really matters if he sprays it away from himself and minds the wind, I think the scent would still get right on him. Not to mention his final act before throwing the container away way to spray in a circle, and then he ran right through his own trail. Personally I think he would've had more chance of success if he'd just washed down and suited up like he did, and then bolted for the hills without spraying his scent

sort of. I think the point was whether it would ultimately completely throw off the trail rather than the escape. Although detection dogs are often used for law enforcement purposes, they are also used as a valuable research tool for wildlife biologists. In California, detection dogs are trained to discover quagga mussels on boats at public boat ramps because they are harmful invasive species for the environment. Detection dogs also tend to be employed for the purposes of finding and collecting the feces of a diverse array of species, including caribou, black-footed ferret, killer whale, and Oregon spotted frog. This process is known as wildlife scat detection.

There are some inherent flaws to these supposed methods for shaking pursuit dogs. I will number the methods in the order they were tested. 1) While the red herring could distract the dog enough for it to lose track of the scent, leaving behind just one instance for it is not a good idea, not if you want to ensure escape. That said, dropping multiple red herrings runs into another problem: it is rarely just one pursuit dog after you, not to mention that each and every dog after you also has their handler with them as well. So while the dog(s) might be successfully distracted over the course of red herrings, the handler(s) will likely notice that the instances form a whole new kind of trail, making it easier for them to bring the dog(s) back on course towards you. 2) The theory is quite sound, but applying it, especially over long durations, is pretty much impossible. Your body is _always_ emitting its own smell, which admittedly can be adjusted through things like changes in diet (though this takes days for any noticeable difference), anti-scent washes and covers are one-time applications, so they will be overwhelmed by your body's constant scent production. If they were to truly remove your scent, they would have to be applied constantly, practically to the point of needing to literally swim in the stuff for the entire length of your escape. Therefore, this approach cannot work, and it applies just as much to trying to mask your scent with another. Is there a way to truly seal your scent away from a dog? Yes, and that is through wearing a purpose-built hermetically sealed and environmentally isolated suit, but bear in mind that such a suit would only seal _your_ scent and not necessarily any other scent (also, do not bother with improvising such a suit, as this approach always comes with some number of shortcomings, and you cannot afford to have any if you want this to work). However, that is not the biggest flaw with this approach. No, the biggest flaw is that there is no practical way to obtain, stash, or wear such a suit, especially not for long durations. As someone who has worked jobs that involved wearing such a suit (microbiologist and chemist), I can vouch for this: they are _nightmares_ to wear for long periods. Not only do they tend to be bulky and heavy (even the least bulky or heavy of these still has some going for them), which would make escaping in them extremely difficult if not outright impossible, but without working climate control, you are screwed, regardless if the climate control is from the room you are working in (which is not exactly an option for a chase) or the powerful cooling fan you carry on your person (which adds weight and thus slows you down and tires you out more - and that is not including how you would have to power it, which also comes with its own weight to add toward the same effects). 3) While theoretically, a big-enough body of water could help remove (or at least dilute) your scent, not only would it have to be quite large (probably to the scale of a major river with multiple bridges for different kinds of traffic), you end up with another problem, one similar to what was brought in for the first one: the handler. Just like with the red herring, they are paying attention for other clues. After all, the dog is focused on just the scent. The handler is looking for other clues, and in the case of a large body of water, because there are likely to be natural, disturbed mud and other natural trappings can still be found. Could these other signs require some searching before they are found? Sure, and that could buy you time, but once those other signs are found, along with them likely still having the reference material for your scent, boom, they are back after you. 4) This one probably comes down to a potential lack of identifying information, particularly for the first round. If you are a criminal, especially if you are an escapee, they would have an image of you as well, so even if the dog might not recognize you, the handler, who would have studied your image (and likely keep it on their person since first seeing it), is more likely to. Frankly, if you wanted to confuse and thus lose the dog, then the reference article should have the scent(s) of other people on it, preferably from having it on them for at least as long as you had it on you. Would this actually work? Admittedly, I do not know, at least not regarding the dog, but regardless, good frickin' luck making the arrangements for that setup. 5) It is just 2) taken to the extreme, and I have already said what needed to be said about 2), so just apply that to here.
@vksasdgaming9472Ай бұрын
Agree in general sense. Idea is not to be untraceable by dog (or handler), but delay them so long that your fresh trail gets naturally messy and new avenues of escape are found. Just like no encryption is unbreakable. Only question is how long it takes to break.
@TheScarab1175 ай бұрын
I think the red herring would have worked if the herring would have been hidden well enough that the police officer doesn't know where it is. If the tins aren't left on the ground and the fish is put in some bushes or tall grass the officer won't know where it is that the scent was lost.
