I also think that a series of vids on the performance mods of days past concerning the classic iron maiden heads may be an interesting lesson for the viewers. Thanks for all you do.

Love all this fine machine work. Now, what are your thoughts about splayed valve heads?I'd really like to hear your opinions/thoughts on them as you are a very trustworthy engine builder

Unless that's a set of 186 or equivalent heads I'm surprised someone would opt to get screw in studs put in. These days it's almost not worth paying normal machine shop rates to rebuild a set of cast iron heads anymore, especially if they are low performance smog heads. You can get Soo much better aftermarket heads for the money. In my area to get a set of cast iron heads fully done up (guides, seats, new valves+springs, and screw in studs) would easily cost $1200+ and at that point an aftermarket head is actually cheaper.

I do a set of these heads with screw in studs guides valve job milling for $650.00 + parts the guides are $2.00 each and a decant set of street performance studs are $25.00, if they are charging you $1200 you are getting severely ripped off it takes me about 6 hours to do a set from start to finish if a shop can't do this work in less than a day, they don't know what they are doing, at $1200 they are making $200.00 per hour who in their right mind would pay that shop rate the National average is around $80 to $90 per hour I would say find another shop

@@Myvintageiron7512 yeah, in my area just a bore job (no wash no tear down, no decking) costs $350. I had a block done a few years ago that I did all the prep, i completely stripped and cleaned everything, even removed all core plugs and cleaned all sludge and pressure washed all the oil passages and I told them just bore it, I got it back for $350 and they didn't even put a champfer on the top of the bore to help assembly, I was pretty disappointed and try to avoid the machine shop at all cost now. We used to have a local napa that had a machine shop in the back and their prices were very reasonable and we're great if you just needed something simple like a quick head surface job or valve job but unfortunately a few years back the man that ran the machine shop retired now there's only 1 local shop within 100miles so you kind of have no choice.

@@Myvintageiron7512 also the local shop charges $180 to surface a set of aluminum heads, and thats without any disassembly or final wash. That's if you bring in a bare set of castings, basically around here if your on a working man's budget you have to avoid the machine shop as much as physically possible.

I have some heads I'm replacing due to the poor job done adding screw in studs without guide plates. Seems like a 3rd grader did the work, no offense to 3rd graders. They are not square and several are off substantially. Can something like that be repaired, like helicoils or similar and make the heads worth saving?

They must have done it with a hand drill I'd start over and have a shop with proper equipment do them

I have been wanting to get in touch with you on how you solved the 3 phase wiring with your Winona Van Norman Guide and seat machine. I just purchased a Winona 2000 machine for my garage. The cord has red, blue, blk, white. Can you give advice on how to wire it. Love all the videos so much so its inspired me to get into building heads as well. Always wanted to be able to do heads also when i rebuild engines. Also can the seat cutters with chipped carbide be repaired at a decent cost, they seem to be braised. who does that kind of work or do they. Also i bought this machine to be able not pay machine shop rates to do what i please including changing spark plug angle and location to higher in the chamber aimed at the exhaust valve. Just need to have a machine shop make the plugs. Thanks the the 3 axis halo on the Van Norman. Thanks. Allen

I use a rotary PHASE CONVERTOR paid about 2K for it you can run the Van Norman with a static phase convertor I did it for years with no problems. www.ebay.com/itm/393089804508?hash=item5b85fa68dc:g:Qh8AAOSwqdhiHO45&amdata=enc%3AAQAHAAAAsDhMxZJ%2FS3tjkLqmIlVUMU86IOZw37V7Ay1BYoDJE6ZJyiMskfIxxyub9tQ9fmYtloQyd74TZ4rRP1P3boA5AD2wKXwYOfU2R1oBenPN%2BiPLnju8w3qYYMw1lTjvfUc91%2FknSyUB7qvR9wPClQOl8yMSdC%2FY49Appag8MClv5rxOhMCi%2BRLlg%2B4UhcHyjcjVfOOO4LkYT4scDwGmvrauBWZwu0qubaDIJGzAxo2iCT2x%7Ctkp%3ABk9SR8CtrKbQYQ
