Temu is having goods subsidized by PRC to implode U.S. businesses. The goal is to shutdown global competition and leave only China left, then the low price ride is over and China will have the ability to cripple other nations. (Taken right from Walmart's playbook!) This takes a lot of money, so they also steal from their independent sellers to help recoup that spending.

The 'Free Shipping' all these apps offer is not free. China is a 'developing nation' according to the UN. That gives them access to subsidized shipping through the UN's 'Universal Postal Union' (UPU). That subsidy comes from postage costs paid by all other mail users. The UPU consists of 192 member countries. So, if you send letters/parcels within one of those countries, part of the cost goes towards 'free' shipping of cheap knock-off Chinese crap - it also means your own manufacturers can't compete with the fakers in China.

It makes sense to impose tariffs and remove loopholes to protect your own manufacturing industry. However, US has de-industrialized its manufacturing industry since 1980’. If you are not producing the goods, why put tariffs on imports? The answer are simple, US Government is so bloody in debts, it needs more tax dollars from its own citizens. Secondly, US political parties are controlled by military and wealthy corporations. Rules are imposed on imports so the corporations can make more money. When the corporations make more money, politicians will get more sponsorship and bribes. Do you guys understand now?

@Leto2ndAtreides2 ай бұрын
There's limited benefit in using tariffs to protect manufacturing of goods where your local goods are not competitive. Because functionally, that's just enforcing theft from your own citizens. Plus, your manufacturing sector might end up not internationally competitive (assuming free market trade) China is coming in with cheaper products so it doesn't run into the problem of its local products not being competitive internationally... Which would not be as true for the US. The US... Needs to focus on products and industries that make more money, because of the higher cost of labor. Unfortunately, China is also angling for those more expensive markets... Which makes things complicated.

@iguanac64662 ай бұрын
There's a LOT of regulatory groundwork to make that happen that politicians just don't care about. We've allowed our companies to outsource everything and claim "Made in America". We've made college education unaffordable which would allow us to build and design new manufacturing and tech. We've slowly gutted unions which would train people how to do stuff and get paid a decent wage for doing so. We'd need to increase focus on high school trade schools for things like electronics, fab, and manufacturing...instead of just the regular HVAC, car mechanic, etc. Companies aren't going to stop outsourcing for the good of the US. They would need to be forced to do so...and no group of politicians is committed enough to do it. One side has no answer and the other side's answer is to crank out more plumbers and electricians (important jobs, but not jobs that are going to reverse the loss of US jobs overseas).

Pretty much every place does that, it's not unique to Walmart. Do you imagine that Target is easier for supplier to deal with, because Walmart is the only one that pushes for the lowest price then can get? If a given supplier can't make something for a low enough price, the store will look for someone else who can; if nobody else can either, then the store will offer a higher price, or discontinue the product (depending on how much the think consumers will be willing to buy it for; they don't want to store unsold products on the shelf because the price is too high; if enough consumers will pay more for it, the store is happy to oblige). This can be hard on a small supplier trying to break into the big times, with their first huge order which is make or break for them. But check the brands at Walmart - there's not much that comes from mom and pop businesses who can be squeezed by Target or Walmart, the large bulk comes from big brands. A brand like Igloo or Coleman or Rubbermaid can push back, because Walmart/Target.etc needs them as much as they need Walmart/Target/etc. They can equally say "if you won't pay us more than $9 for it, you won't be selling our product in your store and people will buy it elsewhere". We don't see many of their suppliers going out of business because they can't make enough profit.

This new law will also significantly impact US owned and operated small businesses that are using 3PL services in China to ship their products, going about it this way is going to end a lot of small businesses and the ones who manage to survive are going to pass these costs on to their customers, yet again hurting US consumers. This is going to make it even harder for small businesses to compete with the big players.

This is a regressive tax and will affect low income people much more than upper income people. I agree that these companies need to behave better (e.g. pay their sellers what they agreed to pay them), but I also think we should be careful with unnecessary price increases for people who have had their cost of living outpace their incomes.

Low income consumers spend more money than higher income consumers. Why? Because the poor will buy cheap junk that lasts 3 months, buy the same cheap junk for another 3 months, etc. Meanwhile higher income consumers buy 1 quality thing that lasts for years, that costs the same as 3 of the cheap items, but lasts as long as 6 of said cheap items. this is going to cause large scale price inflation across the U.S. Temu isn't the only impact.. Although this has bonus impact of control of quality which i still doubt considering use U.S. GRAS standard and other less than safe methods. I dunno if anyone notice but government is looking for more income they are way over budget again in spending. Where do you think all this tariff money goes? Not back to you, not back to those companies. It goes to government. In small doses its meant to level some unequal economy differences but on scale its specifically a new way to add yet another Tax to U.S. citizen income after tax since lots of our products come from abroad these days.

You do realize that a tariff is charged to the person buying a product that is imported from another Country? The consumer ultimately pays these tariffs.
@YotishAMV2 ай бұрын
@@beckyheinz7337 Apologize if was misunderstood. Simplified 1) Countries offer goods at price to U.S. corporations or consumer including tariff cost 2) Distribution Corporations or consumer orders products with cost built in based on demand 3) Country (China) shipping pays government the tariff 4) Consumer price shops and still pick the imported good in many cases only available from said country 5) Consumer pay in their purchase cost the price of tariff, but are unaware of why product cost more than it use to and assume "inflation" when its "price inflation due to tariff." When overused tariff are an invisible tax revenue stream the consumer does not see & has little control over due to nearly static demand for "The American Dream" life at the checkout. Good question to ask is does anyone know how much they already pay for goods over the original price? And will the economy keep turning or will demand plummet with these price increases causing more layoffs as Corporations try to hold on to their stocks valuations. Look at what happen to China recently as their consumer demand plummeted businesses close in droves. There also the inverse case to be argued that less tax money is collected on imported goods due reduce demand as the cost to import increases. To quote a terrible corporate renter in recent news, "Juice this hog" in reference to their renters..

There are too many things I shop for that I can't find a seller for. For example, I pay for a lot of my medical supplies because Medicare doesn't cover them because they are not "traditional." Do you carry medical supplies? Didn't think so. Do you sell vintage record albums? Didn't think so. Do you sell old paperback books? Didn't think so. Do you sell movies and TV series? It has to do with our garbage landfills as well. Too many bulk shipments of such poor quality items, & people don’t buy them. Thin polyester fast fashion clothes. The companies were dumping them straight into our landfills after they didn’t sell. Filling them up. I don’t know about the other states, but in California land is at a premium price. We have to minimize input into our landfills. We need to ban single use plastics as well. They just fill the land fills.

When someone is happy to sell me something dirt cheap I wonder what the real value is to them .. aka what are they paying for by discounting prices.. in my mind, it's data. What people buy, their browsing behaviour, their home address, and all the other information that is gleaned about someone when they use an ecommerce site is very valuable to the company and, in some countries, to the government of the country those companies are located.
