Here in the US, as mentioned, the fair market value (FMV) of the products you receive for reviews under the Amazon Vine program is treated as "taxable income". Some people initially think that they will only have to pay "sales tax" on the product value, however in reality you (and the IRS) will receive a 1099-NEC for income tax filing, so how much you end up paying the government depends on your income tax bracket, not your States sales tax rate. This of course normally then also increases your state and local income taxes as well. Also per the Vine program rules you must keep the product and not destroy, give away or sell it for at least 6 months. Only then you can dispose of it as you wish. Not a bad program but you need to remember the tax consequences. You get the products "free" all year and people tend to go overboard, but then find out afterwards that they've created a tax problem for themselves.

What about states that don’t have state tax like Florida?
@dan83265 ай бұрын
@allisonkelley8061 sales tax is typical for almost all products and has nothing to do with any type of "income" tax. State and/or local "income" tax only applies if you have state and/or local income tax in your state and/or local municipality. IE... Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming, would have no state "income" tax.
@akw8294 ай бұрын
I'll agree however, the taxes aren't really an issue. I only say that because 13 years ago when I ran my ebay and Amazon stores, people would always say "but the taxes are insane." My response was always, you only pay zero tax if you make zero dollars. But sure, people will get hit with the full tax burden.
@VDOVault2 ай бұрын
@@allisonkelley8061 Once a Vine reviewer has taken out $600 or more in ETV (Amazon's bogus & more often than not inflated approximation of the value of what is listed in Vine) Amazon sends a 1099-NEC to the IRS & to the Vine reviewer. Moreover a Vine reviewer can't sell the products they selected from Vine & reviewed for 6 months so a Vine reviewer may owe taxes & have no cash income to pay PLUS if a Vine reviewer receives government benefits they can lose them thanks to the Vine income reported to the IRS. This hurts the poor, the disabled & retirees who review items for Vine.

I am an Amazon Vine member in the UK. There are tax implications to membership in the US which we don't have in the UK. There is NO formula to being invited to take part so don't waste your time writing hundreds of reviews. I've written less than 100 and don't have expertise in any product niche. I have written positive reviews on things that I've really liked, and that's been a range of products. Never written a negative review as I'm a Prime member and just send back stuff I don't like. The invite to join Vine was a complete surprise to me and most of my family thought it was a scam. Some of the stuff that Vipon gives you discounts on are massively overpriced. No one would buy no-name earbuds for over £100 so a 90% discount isn't going to be very impressive. But you live and learn.

Amazon terms and condition for the vine program requires that you cannot resell the products. In some markets, you're able to do as you wish with the products after maintaining ownership for 6 months. In the United States, it is not free. You have to pay taxes on the products.
@viperstarpoint911 ай бұрын
In the US it is 6 months before you can sell, but you can destroy before that, and yes you do need to pay taxes on the products you get. Reselling stuff really won't happen until after you have had your first product for 6 months, and then you need to put in the work to sell said items where you may or may not have to pay tax on the income from the resale of the items.

You can’t do whatever you want with the products you’re not allowed to sell them on eBay at least according to the terms of service. You can give them away for free to friends and family or donate them but I’m pretty sure the contract states that you are not allowed to sell those products.
@diekritischestimme Жыл бұрын
It says something about 6 months you have to keep the product, since Amazon might ask you to send it back (in theory possible). After that it is technically yours and I don't think Amazon cares what you do with that thing. You could donate, throw it away or sell it.
@dana_padrino Жыл бұрын
That’s actually good news. I I thought it was you couldn’t sell the products at any time but I looked it up and you are correct. it does appear that after six months you are allowed to do whatever you want. I think most people looking at videos saying that you can sell the vine products don’t wait six months but try to sell it right away but at least you have that option.

This is an extremely simplistic (and over-optimistic) view of both getting onto Vine, and staying on it. There's lots more accurate info about Vine on youtube and reddit. This video offers little constructive information on the vine program.
@VDOVault2 ай бұрын
Not at all surprised, most sellers & e-commerce people don't actually speak to current Vine reviewers to see how Amazon has degraded that experience for the Vine reviewers either. Or how they can & often do piss us off & screw us over (fun fact, a Vine reviewer doesn't get the benefit of coupons or discounts on the Vine items they select for reviewing the only time our tax liability is decreased on a Vine item is when the Amazon list price is decreased or the 3rd party seller or Amazon specifies that we should get a lower taxable value assigned to their product). So Vine products are not 'free' to a Vine reviewer if the reviewer has to pay taxes on the inflated value of a product in Vine (while the consumer gets the item for a cheaper price with no tax liabilities & no obligation to review it, this is why Vine reviewers sometimes choose to buy a product instead of select it from the Vine program).

If a product's "value" is $100 and Amazon let's you get it for free/discounted, you get the product, review it, then resell it on ebay for $60, then aren't you supposed to report that $100 as income with your taxes, therefor hurting your return? Isn't it based on the "value" of the item, not what your resale was?
@teacherlisa163Ай бұрын
If Amazon 1099s you for say, $1000 (of which your $100 item is a part), and you sell these items for say, $600, then it seems you'd have an income of $1600 - once from Amazon in product value, and once from the sale of it. But if you resale it, then the cost of the items should become deductible. So if you review an item valued at $100 and sell it for $60, then you'd have a $40 deficit - no taxed owed. If you get something where the value is "free", and you sell it for $20, then you'd pay taxes on the $20. Plus... if you're doing a volume of reviews, you will eventually be deducting home office space and all the expenses of a home-based business. But.. I am not a tax consultant! :) So contact a certified person in your local State and country.

But you also said you're not obligated to leave a review? But if you do not then they will not allow you to order free products? Okay, the next thing was that you mentioned that we should leave reviews on a wide range of products. However, you also said that we should only review products in a singular niche and become knowledgeable in that niche? There's a solid amount of double-talk going on here. And these are just 2 examples. Im sure i missed a few more.

How you stay in Amazon Vine is you have to turn in reviews for 60% (or more) of the products you select from Vine. So you can choose not to review up to 40% of what you'd take in a 6 month evaluation period & be allowed to continue as a Vine reviewer for another 6 months when you are again up for evaluation. If you fall below 60% of the items you took from Vine being reviewed you will be kicked out of the Vine reviewers pool.
