Great video tour of the layout. I really like your scenery with all the little details where you have added trucks and heavy equipment. Where do you get all those trucks and equipment. Thanks for sharing. Have a good day.
@AlleghenyNorthern2 жыл бұрын
Ah yes, everyone's favorite part - the trucks and equipment. True story, they're mine, too! A lot of them are 3D printed from vendors on Shapeways. Some of them are metal kits, and others are plastic models from Japan. I have a video on my channel where I go through each of the vehicles so you know where they came from. Some of the newer ones might be missing but if there's something in particular you're looking for - let me know what it is and I can tell you where I got it.
@Truenorth1432 жыл бұрын
Beautiful layout! I have a question about the showcase miniature model kits. Do you use an airbrush or spray can to paint your vehicles. I just my first model and I'm not sure what works best
@AlleghenyNorthern2 жыл бұрын
So, all of the ones you'll see in the vid i used rattle cans. but that was only because i just bought an air brush. both methods will work, but make sure you clean the parts with warm water and mild soap first either way. a good primer (i prefer enamels for metal) and then you're good to can or brush spray.

Nice update, new to the channel. I noticed you've got lots of construction machines around the layout, what makes are they? I'm struggling to find similar vehicles.
@AlleghenyNorthern2 жыл бұрын
There's a few different brands represented, TommyTec (very hard to find), Showcase Miniatures, GHQ, but most of them are 3D printed from Shapeways. There is a video - last year I believe - on my channel that goes through each of the vehicles on the layout and tells you where they're from. A couple of the newer pieces aren't on there, but most of them are.

@@AlleghenyNorthern I use AnyRail myself. I finally sprang for the license, but you can use it free for plans up to 50 track pieces. For years my track plan was in 4 sections, each less than that limit.

This layout is so neat!! Love it. Wondering where you got the road eater machines from?
@AlleghenyNorthern2 жыл бұрын
Glad you like it. The pavement milling machines are from Shapeways. They're 3D printed; the yellow Cat model didn't require any after market parts when I got it. The white Roadtec version did. I do have a video of all the vehicles on the layout, if that's helpful.

Also do you use your roadrailers as an actual train or are they just used as visual effects for your intermodal facility ?
@AlleghenyNorthern Жыл бұрын
Nope, they're actual trains - and they're awesome to run!

That NS loco in the center track at the beginning, is just like mine, neat you have the 2 locos i have, your layout is cool, big too, How long have you been at this? I've been watching a few years on here, only had a set i got this Christmas, plus i got a Kato sound box its very cool
@AlleghenyNorthern2 жыл бұрын
I started with a Bachmann trainset when i was about 9 or 10, so I've been collecting for over 25 years. This layout is about 10 years old, it's the fourth one i've built and is by far the largest. I almost went the route of the Kato soundbox because i always thought the sound from an N scale speak onboard was too tinny, but they've made some great advances in tiny speakers and i opted to just give DCC Sound a try. still a little tinny, but it's ok.
@spiderkidLarry2 жыл бұрын
@@AlleghenyNorthern yeah I had to really talk my mom into the sound box, I looked into locos with sound, too expensive for me. wow you built for layouts, dang, I dont have the room here, i have a N scale only cause it fits on my kitchen table, I also have Kato tracks,, always loved trains they run through my backyard, 2 times when i was about 10 they let me in the engine, that was cool, I doubt they would now with me older, so i dont ask, I did listen to them on a scanner but they did something i looked on line for different channels but didnt work, that was fun for a while
@AlleghenyNorthern2 жыл бұрын
@@spiderkidLarry living at home i had a 10x10 bedroom. all of my furniture was pushed against the wall and the layout took up the rest of the space. it was almost impossible to get around the room. now that i have a full basement available, i took advantage of the space. still have a heavy railroad presence in town, but if i really want to spend the day watching trains - i'd rather jump Amtrak and head to horseshoe curve. it's a few hour train ride and it's awesome. planning to head there in September for the N scale convention. i've never been in a locomotive, but i'd love the chance. railroads are pretty strict about people on their property - the chance for getting hurt is high and the legal aspects just aren't good for us railfans anymore. i blame the lawyers and people's general lack of responsibility for that.

13:37 i have been having issues with that type of switch, where it would improperly close or open, powered or manual, any suggestion to troubleshoot
@AlleghenyNorthern2 жыл бұрын
Ah yes, lots of suggestions for these lil SOBs. That's the number 4 turnout, and for whatever reason they're very susceptible to malfunction. Try a couple things in this order: 1) using a compressed air can or vacuum, make sure there's no loose gravel fouling the switch points. 2) using an electrical cleaner, wipe down all the track and points - especially the moving parts. I recommend you put it on a cotton swab to do this. 3) last technique if the other two don't fix the problem, pinch the rails that move one rail at a time between your finger and thumb and gently rotate it like you're manually opening and closing the switch. Do this on both rails. What i've find out happens is scenery glue gets into this joint and locks it in place, stopping the points from aligning. I've saved all my turnouts with these three steps at some point. Good luck!
