I was 5 years old when this song came out and I was hooked. I knew at 5 years I had to be an Air Force pilot and I had to fly the B-52. My parents would take me to Carswell to watch the B-52s fly--I told my parents all the time that I would fly the B-52 at Carswell one day and "The Big Guy Above" allowed me to realize my dream. I will always be eternally grateful for the career I was given. Becoming a pilot, a squadron commander, and a full colonel started with this song.

I remember when entering the usaf in 1967, this song "air force blue" was popular tune and we sung it in step in basic training. I always thought that air force blue should of been the official air force song.

Growing up as a kid I can remember seeing them play this at night when the tv stations would log off the air. Back in those days there was only 3 tv networks (long ago).

This usually aired on one of the local Baltimore stations right before sign off around 12:00AM. Yes back then you had to wait till 6:00 the following morning to get reception again. Test pattern was on for 6 straight hours!!! Watched this as a 5 year old on a "Muntz" T.V. Thanks for posting.

Thanks for posting. I've been looking for this Mitch Miller version for years. I also remember it as a TV spot in the early 60s. They used to show it at the station sign-on along with the National Anthem. In the 70's, the TV station gave the 16mm reel to the camera store I worked at in High School to test projectors. I must have seen it 100 times then, but I've haven't seen it in more than 30 years. What a great service song.

1977-2004. Loved this song in the Air Force. You never hear it now as it was deemed offensive because of the "pretty girl's eyes" lyrics.

I use hear this on the radio in 1957-58 while in high school, it sent chills up my spine. After graduation in June 1958 I joined the Air Force and had the most rewarding experience of my life with the exception of marrying my beautiful German wife and raising a family.
@richardbrimmer429 Жыл бұрын
Nicely done. You had the stage and instead of spouting off personal fears thru conquests, you gave honor to self, country and wife. You see kiddies, this medium should be only positive content as and for a dose of good. Hard to compose... the bad, so easy!
@bretwhitmore88552 жыл бұрын
I recall an instrumental version of this (with a bit less dated Mitch Miller flourishes) being played during our graduation parade at Lackland. Like so many of the classic Souza marches played that afternoon, it was an easy and very proud song to march to. Despite the stress of having to stand at attention for so long that day, it was one of the proudest in my life. Even so, I still prefer the more classic Air Force Song as the ultimate theme song for my beloved branch. The Air Force was, as they say, 'the best job I ever had." (8 Dec 1981-10 Jul 1996; SAC, USAFE, ATC, ACC).
