Just bought a used oil filter housing with cooler hook-ups for my 2008 335xi. I found out that the only 2008 335's that came from the factory with oil coolers were the one's that had the sport pkg AND 18" wheels. Mine has the spots pkg but had 17" wheels from the factory (18" aftermarket now). This video was super helpful. Thank you so much.

Im truly happy that it did! Also, if you were the original owner of the car, you could of gotten the oil cooler system installed by the dealer under warranty. Apparently a large group of individuals complained about the oil temps and were sorted out for it. Stay awesome!

@@KoseyM I never heard about that. I'm 2ndowner, @ 90k...probably not a chance to get one from the dealer. You bought an original one used? Do you know how thst compares to sn aftermarket upgrade oil cooler kit upgrade? It id hot where aI live, and oil temps run high
@KoseyM
@KoseyM 2 жыл бұрын
You can probably ask but I'm not sure if they're offering that anymore. If you're in a constantly hot environment, I would suggest going aftermarket. Before you do that though, check if you still have the manufacturer warranty. Don't want you to lose that lol. Now, there's a few routes for this. Upgrade the internal thermostat or upgrade it completely, upgrade to a larger or dual oil cooler set up, and or do both. You should see a temp range between 210-240F depending on how you're driving. Used to hit 245-250F on a constant with the original setup. Look into the Mosselman Thermostat(I have w/my n55) with a CSF oil cooler(looks stock but is much larger). Im still running a stock cooler on my new car and the temps already dropped 10-20F Hope that answered your question. If not, let me know!

@@KoseyM thanks, great answer. Gives me a place to start looking. My temps are like the ones you used to have, and I'd like to drop them 10 to 20° (it's a bit scary watching the needle climb while sitting in traffic) so I'll be searching for I guess an aftermarket solution. I need to try to keep this reasonable, but better to pay for cooling parts than a whole engine

hey brotha, that blue adapter piece that comes with the oil cooler, does it thread directly in the oem thermostat or is it kind of a insert and tighten with the bolt style? Did it use copper rings to prevent leaks? I bought a used housing and replacement gaskets but want to buy an ebay cooler like this one. Where exactly do the braided lines leak, and how is it holding up so far?

I measured the part and dug a fitting o-ring out of a box of o-rings... Something necessary for any dyi tech. Also. O-rings that aren't so easily replaced actually don't cost that much. Call the dealer, you might be surprised. ... I think it was $3 for my oil cooler o rings.

The protruding fittings on the "cube" portion is fitted into the bottom of the thermostat. The other two holes are where the oil lines plus fittings connects to. With that "cube" or "block" portion, there should be a screw that screws into the thermostat body. Then of course the oil lines connects to the oil cooler

All good. The thermostat should have two openings or holes at the bottom like shown in the video. The side with the protruding end slides in those two holes. It's then secured by a long screw. The size may vary due to the set up

I'm gonna chime in about one thing: I think the placement for the cooler is poor, hear me out. There is a giant plastic wheel well right behind it, there is really nowhere for the air to go. It would be better placed further away from the wheel liner near the front of the bumper, or if the wheel liner had a section cut out of it with say a plastic or metal grate to catch debris from the wheels. Sadly, dust and water would still splash in. I just don't think its as effective as it could be right in front of the plastic wall.
