The difference between community and caste is the main confusion in this discussion. Tamil community (which is heritable through profession and migration) is confused with caste system of Brahmins (which is heritable only through birth). Kingdoms that were using Brahmins as their gurus and have Manusmṛiti tried to treat/convert/call their “communities” into “castes” to please their God preached by their Brahmins. The irony is that Tamil communities are calling themselves as castes and work like mesmerized suicidal soldiers of Brahmins.

Manusmriti is one of the many dharmasastras. Dravida Thamizhagam has it's own Dharmasastra. The British assumed that like Qur'an for Muslims and Bible for Christians, Hindus follow Manusmriti, but most don't even read it. So, it's illogical. Brahmins have their identity because of their traditions and culture. That sets them apart. With or without temple priesthood. Periyar successfully hoodwinked the Tamizhans into believing Brahmins where responsible for all caste based atrocities and didn't solve anything but delivered Tamizhagam to Christianity. Even today caste based honor killings continue. Despite only 6,000 out of 1,34,000 temples having Brahmins in Tamizhagam, Tamizhans still believe Brahmins caste bully them.
