The song was written by the Silesian songwriter and youth leader Erich Scholz. There was never a Russian version of this song. It was a song for the German youth movement. The song is about the defeated West Russians Volunteer Army, which fought against the Soviets together with the Freikorps (Iron Division) in the Baltic States 1918-1919.
The West Russian Volunteer Army consisted of released Russian prisoners of war and was set up by the German Empire before the end of the war.

This channel is fantastic, brings back some strong memories and some good songs to hear... my great-uncle's father fought in the first World War in the east (my family has extensive history in that part of former Germany) and this is one of the songs that I remember hearing as a child when I still lived with that side of my family. I had not remembered the words, but the melody was always a bit of an earworm for some reason. Now that I found this channel and this video, I remember why a lot of those melodies were stuck in my head. Thank you for preserving so many classic melodies, these songs really do tell history better than most school textbooks could in some aspects. It may not have the precise details like the book, but it has more of the spirit and mood than the simple words and maps on a page. Please don't get me wrong, I love this channel and I have been learning how to speak german. But those types of videos rally some undesirable people, extremists, neo-nazis, it becomes a meet-up point. Of course this isn't the intention of Dr.Ludwig, but it happens. It's like random uploads from children that atract pedophiles, youtube removes those videos because of uncultured neo-nazis and extreme right wing that use those songs as ways of meeting up, and youtube does it's best to try and stop those guys from acting up, removing videos or the entire channel because of it. And normal people like us, who just aprecciate the songs and the culture get caught up in between the crossfire.

Am Ende oder kurz nach dem 1. Weltkrieg ging der Bürgerkrieg und der Krieg zwischen Polen und Russland und auf dem Baltikum noch weiter. Dort kämpften auch noch versprengte deutsche Verbände mit und daher kommen diese Lieder.
