Driven by her love of Palestinian food, Nadia Gilbert, a New York-based chef, visual artist and host of the Sahtein! show, believes in fostering our relationship to food and it being the key to the future.
“I learned from a very young age that food was the way we stay connected to our roots and connected to who we are,” says the Palestinian-American chef, who found her love for cooking when she was away from home in film school.
Womena is getting personal with our new #AtHome series, where we delve deep into the stories of the region’s leading changemakers and creatives as they invite us into their homes and candidly talk to us about their personal passions and their work.
Nadia tells us about how she thinks gardening is revolutionary and how her family grew their own garden, as well as a garden in her apartment buildings’ rooftop, which if replicated everywhere, would allow people to connect to the land in which their food grows from.
Are you conscious about the food that you eat?

It fascinates me that she sees herself as a full Palestinian. She has to be. Being a Palestinian, by default you become a poet whom is able to portray emotions, love and life with irressitable harmony.

I'm not sure what you mean by diaspora. You're American, no? A couple of years ago here in Canada we welcomed over 50,000 Syrian refugees. I have made friends among them. They don't feel like they are part of a diaspora, they feel like Canadians from Syria. I think it's a mind set. To us that word has nationalistic connotations and that always causes conflict. Ask my friends from Syria. Or Egypt or Pakistan or Mali, Iraq, Lebanon, Persia or Afghanistan. My Palestinian friends don't feel like they are part of a diaspora, they feel like Palestinian Canadians, and watch hockey with more fervour than I do. (They love our weed even more than our hockey!) People who emigrate and settle here are grateful and thankful and few ever return back to the homeland. They are home, safe in Canada. Please explain what you meant. Anyway, love your food, love your recipes, and I am a huge supporter of and for Palestine and its wonderful people, but confused by your thinking. Would love to understand. (PS: Who has land? Rich people. It may well be magical and healing but luck and privilege play huge roles in it.) Anyhoo...Salaam alaikum.

Well a diaspora refers to people that have dispersed beyond their original homeland. So while you can adopt a new homeland and maybe never return to their homeland, it doesn’t take away from the meaning of a diaspora. As you said, your friends feel like Palestinian Canadians. They take part and enjoy Canadian culture, but ultimately they still feel like Palestinian Canadians. I’m not sure why the term would have nationalistic connotations, as nationalism involves the exclusion of other countries and their cultures, and that’s not what “diaspora” refers to. Canada is home to your friends now, but their country of origin is a huge part of their story and their identity, like you said they view themselves as Canadians from Syria. Diasporas don’t just happen for the sake of it, seeking refuge is a huge part of it, and so the 50,000 Syrian refugees welcomed into Canada would be part of a Syrian diaspora, regardless of their nationalist identity. That is how I interpret diaspora, although, I a, not Nadia, so I can’t explain what she means by it. : P It is also worth mentioning, that for some who move to other countries, the right of return isn’t a guaranteed option hence why they never return back.
