I'm not a huge Procol Harum fan, but this was a truly great performance. So many singers, as they age, lose the best quality of their voice. He's not a young man in this, and yet, he sounds better to me then he ever did. Incredible.

There are certain songs that are timeless and create goosebumps every time you hear them. Gary Brooker created this magic over 50 years ago and then was able to recreate it to a T live here in 2006. Not many vocalists can sing their recordings as they were 5 decades ago. Gary was specially gifted.

well worth listening to the original 1967 procul harum version of this tack as well.Gary Brookers voice is mesmerising and the song is almost difinitive of that era. it is a song you can spend a lot of time wandering about the lyrics or just take in the beauty of it. It refers to the 14 c english book the canterbury tales by Chaucer. Also worth mentioning the brilliant guitarist from this band Robin Trower , very good but not as well known as he should be. He went on to have his own self titled band into the 70's - my favourite track- Daydream. Procul Harum alos do a good version of an interesting song called Morning dew by American folk singer Bonnie Dobson, which has been covered by dozens of good bands including Jeff Beck with Rod stewart, nazareth , episode six ( featuring Ian Gillan from Deep Purple) Mick Taylor from rolling stones, Robert Plant, the National and many others. There is areason why it has ben covered so much,it is a really good song.

Wow, heard the song a million times and seen more than a couple live versions over the years, but that was sublime. That took an already epic song and made it a total musical experience. That was so well arranged. All the depth of symphony but losing NONE of the original rock magisterial vibe. And Gary’s voice is still super on point here, almost better than the original because it’s colored by age but it doesn’t stray off pitch or lose power. Holy smokes that is THE version for that song. I’d be afraid to perform it after that lol.

NAIA, you’re actually right about there being a castle in the place this concert was filmed. It’s Ledreborg Castle in Lejre, Denmark. You can see some of the castle in the video, but just a small portion of it, it’s actually a huge castle on a huge amount of land. In the short summers in Denmark it’s been a tradition for a long time to have orchestras perform, or plays put on, on the lawn of the castle.

Many like this live version and no doubt it is absolutely beautiful, BUT it is not what made this song so iconic and memorable. Before I listen to the video I bet that you will not mention what did make iconic. What I am talking about is that there was no orchestra or choir overshadowing the haunting sound of the organ. It is the original studio version with the organ that I will always hear in my head

You are aware that a REAL 'Songwriter' not only writes the lyrics but also the Score/Music and might also include the Arrangements !?! 🇨🇦 The music has to be written for ALL the instruments, and this Orchestra has 100 members ! The music and arrangements have to be written also for the Choir of about 70 members ! All the arrangements are a collaboration of the Author/Artist and the Conductor !

Primo psychedelic rock from the Sixties! IMO, the song is about a man who is going about his day with his wife, and feeling miserable and sick to his stomach, he confronts her with her infidelity. Caught, she turns pale. Referenced in the lyrics, "The Miller's Tale" is from Chaucer's "Canterbury Tales," a medieval English anthology written around 1390 AD. "The Miller's Tale" is about a wife who commits adultery. When he sings so painfully, "And so it was," he's recounting the moment his life fell apart. One of the somewhat under-credited inputs to rock in the 60s-70s is medievalism, which shows up well here. FWIW, if you're ever interested in seeing the bands in their youth, there are videos of Procol Harum and the Moody Blues performing their signature songs (period music videos). For something completely different, I see you have yet to cover Edgar Winter Group's "Frankenstein" (1972). It's an instrumental that hit #1 in 1973. Also a phenomenal hit from 1971-72 is "Roundabout," by Yes. If you want another killer vocalist from the period, it doesn't look like you've heard Janice Joplin yet. Maybe try the iconic "Piece of My Heart" (1968).

"A Whiter Shade of Pale" has sold in excess of 10,000,000 copies which is a remarkable feat, especially for a song released as a single. Only about 40 songs in history have ever achieved this great feat. In 2004 the song also made it onto the top 60 of Rolling Stone’s notable ranking of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. In 1998, it was inducted into the highly-distinguished Grammy Hall of Fame. And in 1977 the Brit Awards gave it the distinction of being The Best British Pop Single 1952-1977, an accolade it shared with “Bohemian Rhapsody” (1975) by Queen. Also in 2018 the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame changed its criteria, allowing singles to be inducted into the institution as opposed to only musicians themselves. And “A Whiter Shade of Pale” was amongst the first songs to be enshrined therein. The success of this song has led to “a whiter shade of pale” being adopted as a common phrase in the English lexicon.

Thanks for getting to this one so fast! Wish I could have been there. I did see Gary Brooker 25 or 30 years ago with Ringo Starr and His All Starr Band in Ft. Lauderdale and the band played this song with Gary on the famous Hammond organ. I've seen some of your Zepplin videos and I'm leaving a link for another performance of Stairway To Heaven. This time the 3 surviving members of the band are being honored by Pres. Obama and First Lady Michelle at the Kennedy Center in DC. They are presented with a cultural achievement award. You see the 3 members looking down from the balcony almost in tears at times as the band HEART featuring the great Nancy Wilson singing and her sister Ann on guitar. It is performed in a similar way as the one you just watched with an orchestra and chorus backing and it's beautiful. Even Jimmy Paige said "why didn't we think of that", LOL. Zepplin's drummer, John Bonham had passed but his son is on the drums wearing the bowler hat that his father was known for. You will see some stars in the audience most notably the President and Michelle. This video has 35M views from 2012. It's another highly reacted to video I'm sure you'll enjoy: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gnfbgJR6mq-gjs0

While the sound of the song might be like something that would be played at a wedding, if the person picking the song knew it's lyrics writers meaning it would be far from being something to play at a wedding. "There is seemingly a whole lot going on in “A Whiter Shade of Pale”. Not only is the instrumental partially based on a song dating all the way back to the 17th century, but there are also references to the likes of “the miller”, “16 vestal virgins” and “Neptune” which truly gives the lyrics a mythological, esoteric feel. But as the man who actually wrote the words, Keith Reid, has explained, his goal in writing this classic was to put forth a “straightforward, girl-leaves-boy story”. A girl leaves boy song/story wouldn't really be fitting at a wedding. Very interestingly, "A Whiter Shade of Pale" has held a particularly strong standing in Procol Harum’s homeland of the United Kingdom. For instance, it has been recognized as being both the most-played song in public and the most-played song on air in the UK throughout the 20th century and into the 21st. As far as hits go, no act could have asked for a bigger success than “A Whiter Shade of Pale”. The song came out as part of Procol Harum’s debut album, which itself is entitled Procol Harum. And the track reached number 1 in nearly 15 different countries, including most notably the UK Singles Chart. After topping the Dutch Top 40 in 1967, it went on to also do the same on the Netherlands’ Single Top 100 in 1972, having also recharted on the UK Singles Chart that year. Additionally it reached number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100, despite receiving limited promotion in the United States. In fact this track holds the distinction of being one of the highest-selling singles of all time. Or stated otherwise, it has sold in excess of 10,000,000 copies which is a remarkable feat. That means it wasn't a Gold song or a Platinum song but instead a Diamond song. And for the record, only about 40 songs in history have ever achieved this great feat.
