Liz thanks so much for all the information you are willing to share. I started doing nails last year. Started with acrylic but have started to fall in love with hard gel. I am a DIY (er). I appreciate that you don't ever make me feel like I shouldn't be doing something i love to do also i love that you tell us the technical terms. I instantaneously feel more informed when I watch yout videos. Thank you.

I went to a “salon” where I was told that nowadays the cuticle is not removed, it’s only pushed. The color application was also uneven but I did not notice until I left because the place was very very dark. I was so unhappy, I removed the gel (which funny enough peeled off very easily) as soon as I made it home, then I started looking for videos on KZbin to learn how to do my own nails. Fast forward to you and Susie and I have learned so much! Thank you, thank you, thaaaaaaaank you :)

Im sooooo glad you talked about what really damages your nail plate. I get asked that a lot cause I do infills on my nails ppl think having hard gel ruins the natural nail. One of my co-workers has had hard gel put on at a salon and they damage her nails. They're doing the removal incorrectly hence the damage. Thank you for addressing this topic again. 🙂

Liz requested that I briefly explain the difference between HEA and HEMA. HEA (Hydroxyethyl Acrylate) is the acrylated version and HEMA (Hydroxyethyl Methacrylate) methacrylated version of the same base resin. The methacrylated versions of the resins that we use in our industry are typically less allergenic to use than the acrylated versions of the same resin type. The methacrylated versions also have less heat generated during curing and will usually have better gloss after curing. This is all assuming that the main structure of the resin is the same between the acrylated and methacrylated versions. So, HEA will be faster curing, less exothermic and have a better gloss than HEMA. The same will hold true for THFA vs THFMA and others.

What a wonderful video! I went to cosmetology school 30 yrs ago and when it came to acrylic nails I refused to do them , mainly because they said we had to nearly destroy the nail bed first for the acrylic to hold. The monomer back then was truly a lung destroyer! We had a few students land in the hospital as they had no proper ventilation , air conditioning was considered ventilation! We had our choice to do or not do acrylics, I chose not but I did do nails. Products have come a long way since then but still like you said needs to be used in moderation and care. I had so many customers come to me with damage from acrylic nails and I found rubbing pure Vitamin E into the nails everyday healed the nails in two weeks. I had as many manicure customers as hair customers. You covered so much I just love you and Susie. Thank you so very much for taking out your time to do this. Your very educated and personable. Lots of love your way!

With the current 'pandemic' going on and salons being closed, I started doing my own nails (dipping powder). Your channel has been a God send. Not only have you helped me to properly care for my own nails, but I am now informed enough to know when corners are being cut if I were to go back to a salon. But, I love doing my own nails! I used to do them with other types of product when I was young. I also love learning, & I absolutely LOVE your teaching style! You don't just teach the what, you teach the why. One of my favorite examples was when you took the time to teach the anatomy of the nail. You are a gifted teacher. Thank you for sharing your skills and knowledge. Wishing you continued success.

Thank you Liz for answering my question!!!!! I was the one asking about chipping on the free edge on natural nail overlay. What you said makes a lot of sense! I too am an electrical engineer, I do nails on the side and your way of explaining things resonares so well with my analytical mind :-) Your video made me wonder about a few more questions: do your considerations on curing and quality of the product also apply to polygel? Or is polygel more forgiving since it's a mix of acrylic and gel? Would love for you to do a video on it, I would love to know more about it, especially as to why you dont sell it on the nail hub (do you think it's a bad product?) Thanks again you are awesome

Hey Liz ! Could you do a video on how to maintain the shape throughout the time and keep the nails straight. My nails are naturally crooked so my extensions tend to get crooked too over time as my natural nails grow underneath, even though I built them straight in the first place. Same with nails growing downwards and upwards. How do you rectify the shape while backfilling? That would be super helpful, thank you so much for sharing your knowledege !

The problems that i see is that not matter the age it is hard to get them to learn or understand the importance of these basic fundamentals. Thanks a mill Liz!! Will you be doing a video on capping only? I try and cap the free edge of my nails but I am sometimes left with a blob of gel underneath my nail, which will sometimes peel of and other times it will stay on. I use gel polish and Im always afraid I do not use enough gel on the edge thus the over-capping. I don’t think I have the hang of it quite yet. Thanks for your amazing work! With Love

Hi Mrs. Liz! I'm very interested in learning the free edge encapsulation process you are describing at the 15:00 minute mark. As I picture it in my mind, I'm thinking that every layer will build and at the end before filing there will be considerable length and thickness built up on the free edge even with wiping between layers. Maybe you can show us even if it's only on one finger with the form placement and layering of the gels over the nail! Thanks for everything and we miss the weekly vids! I would also like a detailed video on the new Kokoist Nova lamp!

Another fantastic video!! Thank you so much, you're such a good educator. Video suggestion: how to refresh a gel polish manicure without soaking off. I see a lot of nail artists doing this on IG, they efile off the colour and some of the old base coat, then go on with the new mani. As a DIYer, I find soaking and scraping off my old manicure so time consuming and often damaging that I've wondered if efiling or hand filing would be an option instead 🤔

Thank you so much for the time you spent on all these questions!!! I think you kind of mentioned this video idea, but in that future video about removing hard gel and or filing out a lifed nail, would you be interested in explaining how to file out little bits of lifting from an overlay or extension? So not removing the entire thing or a completely split of the product from the nail, but just little spots that can develop from poor prep/application. I know we should use diamond bits cause were nearing the natural nail, but every time I use a unicorn or cuticle bit to file out the area, on a low or high rpm I still manage to cause the correctly adhered gel around it to also lift at the same time. Clearly this creates a cycle of just filing out more and more until it's pointless. Is my rpm the problem? the bit? my angle? (I own Ericas mt20 and their bits, and the most common gel I get lifting on is using Kokoist base and builder to make overlays)
@Aname0w
@Aname0w 5 жыл бұрын
My video request is if you could please do a very detailed video on lifting. How to remove lifting from different areas (i:e; Free edge, side walls, cuticles etc), possibilities of why those areas lift, and of course how to correct it, remove it safely, what bits to use, and how to fill it seamlessly. That would be oh so appreciated!! I also just wanted to add that sometimes you're the confidence boost that i need. I am my own harshest critic as i'm a natural perfectionist when it comes to details. Your answer to the lifting on natural overlays, really validated how i already felt and what i already knew. My self confidence however, can make me feel otherwise where i doubt the quality of my work. I know i produce solid work (always room for improvement of course) as i have watched every single video since you first started the nails fundamentals playlist. I cannot thank you enough on educating me, and in turn educating my clients. My work has significantly improved since first watching your videos, and with a lot of practice and dedication i continue to improve with each and every client. Thanks again, Ana from Daylesford Nail Boutique

The first one is the position. I think that i bend over too much - if i dont i cant get the produact as close to the skin as if i bend over a lot. But when i work like that at the end of the day may back hurts - below the neck. So do you have tips how to work from a healthy distance and what is the proper poastur for doing nais so you dont have back problems - what mask do you recomend - i have sensitive nose and throath and cant work without a mask but im not shure that that the ones in using are ideal. I get thouse for when your sick - i think doctor and dentist use the same ones. Are they good for doing nails or are they better ones and how to find them - i sometimes get and indent line acros my nail - from side to side about 1,5 - 2 mm from my free edge in the gel polish. When my nails are fresh i cant see thaht line but when they grow out its there. I trie to poliah with my brush as flat as possible to my nail. I get this on random fingers and not aways. Such kind of indents arent sible from any angle on my nails before putting any products and dont happen if i have artificial nails. Is it possible they apper after time - something wrong with my base coat or it is my poliahing technique and if you have tips on how to get rid of them cuz they are very anoing - can you talk about ingredients - which to definitely look out for. In small countris as mine it is hard to find a reliable brand - the names i see i have never heard and the big brands that are offered are so expensive here. Ive found some brands that i think are safe and i check if the ingredient are allowed for use in the EU but would be great if there was written in sinple words whats safe and whats not or at leat will cause any kinda of issues - whats your oppinion on chep lams which are sold by some 'brand' name for 4 time more money. Like i use a sunone lamp for 15 dolars from alliexpreas and the same lamp ive seen to be sold for 40-50 dolars - they look the same the parameter are the same - in 99% sure they are the same only with some sticker slaped on them. And one sun model ive seen for 20 dolars in alli and here for 125... maybe im wrong that they are the same thing but if not... - how to make nails with foil - i transfer foil on the sticky layer of my top coat and when i seal it with top pieces stick to my brush and spred on the nail and then all the other nail are shimmery because my brush is contaminaited and my top - like when sealing glitter of powders. I can have a separet top for that but i hate when little flake foil spread on the patched foiled look - as if ive put a shimerry top coat not a regular. Ive seen pictures whre there isnt that shimmery top coat effect so it's possible. Ive tried sticking the foil on the base coat and it's the same. Wlould a foil glue solve my problem - whats your opinion on chem art nail produckts - glitters powders jem glues foil glues and etc. Lets say a chep chrome powder from alliexpress - is it harmful if inhaled and the expensive professional one is fom kind of cosmetic grade - more safe in such king of scenario. Whats the difference in a 2 dollar foil glue to a 7-10 dollar one if both work the same and etc. Thank you in advance as aways 😊

Liz, I HAVE MISSED YOU SO MUCH! You are the best. I use your fundamental tutorials over and over, AND refer my nail-related social media groups (many who are professionals) to your videos...ESPECIALLY the one you did a while back on putting a layer of soft gel under hard gel to make the hard gel removable. I'm looking forward to seeing more from you!

Thank you for another super informative video! I've always struggled with the concepts of electricity mostly because of lack of interest lol and that really helped volts, watts and amps make more sense to me. The super ironic thing is my brother is a master electrician, I should know this stuff 😂😂 look forward to the next video!

This was an awesome video. I love the tip about putting on a nail form on short nails to get a tiny free edge to reduce chipping/peeling. I also didn’t know that cleaning off the inhibition layer the wrong way could expose me to uncured gel! I have changed the way I clean off my nails by just modeling the way you do it, but it’s great to know there’s a specific reason to your method. Also, fellow engineer here-I studied Civil, but definitely remember your volt/amp/watt definition almost by heart. “Physics II” in the USA 😁What’s the source?

AWESOME video! And a very long comment, but I feel that some background is needed before I ask my question. I was stupid enough to try to remove my old product (soak off) and used the metal cuticle pusher and that took away layers of my already weak nails :((. I now have no free edge left, so what I did was to do the full IBX repair & strengthen treatment, followed by a nail overlay with a gel I bought locally which does not require a primer, and I applied your method of applying base gel on very short nail, with the brush going away from the cuticle area and over the free edge. As the gel is really translucent, I am not sure how much product I actually placed over the free edge. Then, after polymerization, I applied my wet layer and used a small blob and build the nail/overlay/apex. The gel was so fantastic, I actually did not file it as it really self leveled beautifully. At the end - I added a flexible topcoat. Now, after watching your video, I understand why it is important to add a tiny free edge and to cap it. Well, I did not use any forms as it was 2 AM and I needed to build some nails and go to sleep, but once my nail grows out a bit, maybe I could actually try to file a bit the free edge (in order to create adherence), fit in forms and actually add 1 mm of product, to help avoid any lifting? I did see a lot of lifting on the free edge on 3 of the fingers after applying various products over time (every time that was a nail overlay, but I did not always take care to "cap" the free edge as the nails grew out). Is this doable, to extend the nail in this way, or am I in danger of perhaps "sealing" any teeny tiny lifted spot that could actually appear until I decide that I am extending the nails? As I will also be leaving town for a while, I am concerned not to further damage my weakened natural nails any further ... THANK you IN ADVANCE - if you ever have time to provide your valuable advice!

A teeny bit of lifting on the free edge can usually be filed and cleaned and then yes you can put forms on and extend them a bit more. No need to remove everything. As long as everything is well cleaned and also bacteria removed with alcohol or the gel cleanser I showed how to make you should be A-ok. Also try not to use your actual fingertips while your nails regrow. Sounds strange but what I mean is use your skin of your fingertips or the sides of your fingers more than your fingernails. It will help prevent separation because your nails will be more prone to it since they are uber thin and flexible.

@@TheNailHub thank you, it totally makes sense - now I just hope I will have time to do it before leaving :). As for not using the fingertips, that would be a challenge as my job requires me to sit in front of a computer and type a lot :))

Hi Liz! Thank you so much for uploading videos that are SO informative, fun, and helpful to the nail industry! I have always loved nails, and since there weren't any nearby nail schools, I actually ended up going to Cosmetology school and getting my degree, and now license. My education was mainly centered on hair, and being the only student who was interested in nail enhancements/nail technology, it was and still is very difficult to find good education so I can always better myself in this industry. I do have a question about my nail biter clients, and I honestly just don't know what to do at this point. I use Orly Builder in a Bottle, and I haven't had any issues with this product or with lifting at all. When I use the gel builder on my nail biter clients it never fails, within a week and a half, they'll message me and say they took off their nails. BUT then go on to say "My nails are just so damaged and thin, I just don't think the builder gel is any good." And as a nail tech, all I'm thinking is, "OF COURSE they feel thin or maybe a little damaged you literally ripped off your nails?" I know as a nail tech I am not with my clients 24 hrs a day after they get their nails done, but what can I do? I always tell my clients if they have any issues or feel lifting to let me know, so I can make sure it's not something I'm doing in prep or application. But should I refuse to do their nails at this point? As much as I try to educate my clients what should I do if they won't ever listen? I know that was a long comment but I truly appreciate any help! Thank you so much!!

Sometimes you have to have a "come to jesus" meeting with specific clients. The issue with continuing to do their nails when they rip them off is ultimately no matter how much you explain, they will blame you for the change in their nails. They also will tell others that you are their nail tech and not fully explain the whole story...so I usually give clients (especially nail biters, etc) a couple of chances. If they continue to take matters into their own hands at home I sit them down and explain that this process of them picking and peeling, and me reapplying, is ultimately hurting their nails. They can either work with me and stop doing that. Or I tell them if it happens again I'm not going to put anything back on. Tell them it comes from a good place and you want the best for their nails, but that also sometimes means stopping services all together.

Ok so I just got my license, had a friend who was opening a salon, she told me that I had to start putting sunscreen on my clients hands before I stick their hands in the UV light. I told her no way, that the studies have shown the risks are insignificant and that if I apply sunscreen on my clients before going into the lamp then there is a big chance their nails will come off the next day lol. My job procedure is getting all the oils OFF the nails. I will gladly put on after and tell them the harm of not protecting your skin from the sun. Anyway just wanted to share . But the there were more issues and I had to say that we should go our separate ways.
