I went from naked to faired - I can only really get away with one bike so my Tracer 700 (it’s a bigger, taller MT07 with a fairing, screen and bigger tank - not available in the USA) and when you live in a cold rainy country, that practicality takes precedent. It’s great

I started on a Z400 and 100% would recommend it to anyone just starting out. It's got enough power to have fun, can keep up with pretty much anything, and long rides are still comfortable. The only big drawback I ever saw was at highway speeds you really do have to battle the wind. Tucking in helps but a strong enough gust will make you feel like you're at the mercy of the wind.

I recently picked up a 2016 Yamaha MT-03 with only 3000kms for a dank price, and I love it. I'm an experienced rider but it's my sole mode of transport, so it's super practical but still hoons on mountain roads like nobodies business. The power band is super linear, so theres ample low end torque and still feels great at high revs. I was looking at getting a Duke 390, which definitely felt a tad faster, but was told by several mechanics that the plastic fuel/oil? pump is prone to fucking out and they see a lot that catastrophically overheat. That could be here-say, but here in Australia, Japanese bikes are definitely cheaper to maintain in general. I can't recommend the MT-03 highly enough for absolutely any type of rider.

When I bought the Duke 390 I was looking for a naked. I was 285lbs when I started riding it. Lost 40-50lbs since then, but I had no problem hauling me around. I was awesome! I never wanted a “sport” type starter cause I’m not really into super sports. Maybe if I start track riding. I test rode the Kawasaki z400, BMW G 310R, and the Duke 390. I chose the Duke over the BMW (close second) cause it has a snapper throttle which to me helps more with throttle control when you upgrade. I LOVED the 390. I was a blast to ride. Reason I traded it was because I live around a bunch of highways and interstates. At 70+ the bike is at its peak and I wanted more power to be able to pull my self out of situations if one arose. Other than that I absolutely loved riding it. Kinda wish I didn’t trade it in just to have and ride around.

How is the street triple in your opinion after riding the Duke 390? Just wondering as I also started on a KTM Duke 390 but I went to a Yamaha R6 after looking at both naked bikes and supersports, and it is an awesome bike! I was not used to the super sport's aggressive seating position but within a week it felt as comfortable as the duke. What i love about the R6 is being able to tuck in (also the insane power at 14K RPM)

After many years of having to remove the left fairing (and slider) on my VFR for 2-3 oil & filter changes annually, I finally moved to a naked bike. So much easier to maintain, but much more time consuming to clean. Still, I like it. One big point regarding naked vs. fairing bikes for lane splitting - While the naked bike itself is usually narrower, the handlebars are usually wider than a sportbike with clip-ons, negating the advantage of the narrower bike. Add to that the fact many naked bike owners install bar end mirrors that stick out even a little further, and you might have a bike too wide to lane split (or filter), not that it’s legal in most US states anyway. One big advantage to a naked with it’s more upright ergonomics is being able to see around you more easily than in a sportbike crouch. Your more upright torso and head sticking up makes you easier for other motorists to see you, too.

I started in the 80's with a Standard ('85 Honda NightHawk 650 Shaft Drive and a Suzuki Katana 1000), then 90's SportBikes, then '00's Cruisers, now in my 40's, I am looking for my forever perfect bike. Fell in love with a busa after a test ride, but that would be a second bike for me, I need an all rounder that I can put 10-15K miles a year on. Commuting during the week, twisties on the weekends. Thanks to your channel I have zeroed in on naked bikes, but my problem is because I gotten so used to the torque of big motors ( out of my last 5 bikes the smallest was an R1, biggest a 96ci Dyna WideGlide), so all the sub 1000cc bikes have left me feeling flaccid. So now I am down to either a V-MAX or a B-King... My Crocs and TankTop are Ready to rule Squiddom!

Also, just incase this helps anyone pull the trigger on one, MY FZ10 has a touring windscreen which stands nearly as high as my visor, a perfect fit luggage rack & saddlebag supports. In about 25 mins + 2 sockets/1 allen wrench, i can turn my naked monster into a fully equipped touring bike! not to mention the stock 12v outlet serves well for GPS/Phone charging. It just really is such a good bike. I will say, however....It's biggest downfall is the fuel economy. If you are riding with people on bigger harleys or touring/adv bikes, you might be pushing limits for gas stops while they are still at half a tank. That is truly my only complaint with the FZ10 after 1000's of miles and years of ownership!

As for which naked bikes I like the most,at least when it comes to looks,I'd have to go with modern retro nakeds (like Bonneville T120, R Nine T, CB1100, W800, Z900RS and similar bikes) because they look cool,or older naked bikes from the 90s and 2000s (such as ER5, Hornet 600, SV650, GSX1400 , Monster 620, etc.) because of nostalgia, since I'd often see them riding around town back when I was a kid.

I own a MT-07 its my first bike really, all I had before was a Ruckus and a 125cc Zuma. I find that it was the perfect entry level street bike for me (6'3 270) because its got enough speed to get you out of a sticky situation but mainly because its extremely fun riding on the streets. My favorite naked bike: Moto Guzzi v7 850 because even today it is air-cooled, it has a driveshaft instead of a chain or a belt and the cylinders are in the right position instead of a BMW RnineT. In narrow corners the cylinder heads of the bmw scratch on the road. And yes, when you start the engine and the longitudinal mounted V-Twin begins to shake from the right to the left... that's character.

Just bought a 2020 CB650R for my first bike (but w/ previous riding experience). I couldn't be happier. The thing is just gorgeous lookin' and doesn't sound half bad either, although it is slightly quieter than I'd prefer. But holy smokes... the engine is a force to be reckoned with. Without a windscreen I doubt I'll be able to see the bike's fullest potential. But after going 120mph at 10k rpm in 6th gear, I can confidently believe Honda's estimated top speed of 150mph at 13k (which no one should be going anyhow). I've recently taken the bike on a messy/bumpy dirt road (uphill and downhill) with stock Metzeler tires (which I do not recommend) and they didn't do half bad. If I threw some knobby tires on it, I'd feel more confident to say this bike can perform well on any dirt road, but flat dirt roads are the only type I'll be riding till then. All in all, it's a sexy bike that you won't get bored of easily. My only recommendation right off that bat would be to swap out the stock grips for some ProGrips (7/8"). I took mine to a mechanic to swap out and it took him quite a while (~30min) to remove the stock ones... Apparently Honda added some teeth to their grips that make it difficult to remove.

There's always the Suzuki GS500E...I have one for my first bike and it's the perfect dirt cheap starter that's not going to surprise a beginning rider, but still has enough power and a good amount of torque to not be boring once you start getting the hang of it.

@@oddketil the fuel dual petcock arrangement is retarded, and mine sat around with old gas for ages and having to battle rust debris with no nice way to run in line fuel filters, so have been having issues with that, but the rest of it is good enough. I would say it's not the most planted feeling bike, but is fine as long as you're not trying to scrape knees at 80 mph or anything. Mine has been sitting for a few months with an unknown fueling or possibility valve lash issue...carbs are spotless and it just acts like the fueling is way off, or a valve isn't seating...so I got tired of messing with it and moved over to other projects for a while. I'll probably not keep it for long, but the Keihin CR carbs sound frickn epic at full rip.

I've been riding since October and my first bike is a Suzuki GSF 600 Bandit Unfared , which i guess you class as a Naked in that case. So far its been amazing, sure its got some weight to it but being an inline 4 it sure took me by surprise the first few times i took it out compared to the single cylinder i trained for my motorcycle test (think it was a Gladius 650). So far for a 17 year old bike its done its job and i haven't had a problems with is thus far, on top of that i only paid £1100 for it and it came with less than 30k on the clock, a Remus revolution exhaust, aftermarket Brake and clutch levers and is in very good condition for its age :) Just a heads up, Yammie noob also helped inspire me into the motorcycle world along side a friend who also rides. Good job Papa Yam, king of the squidlets ;)
