Yeah unfortunately, you'll see that this is the only Disney movie (especially in the Disney Renaissance) where the main protagonist has a human friend, yet chooses to listen more to the non-human friends. Seriously, hasn't anyone ever seen that trope recently now? Smart humans would usually be telling the main protagonist to not go looking for trouble, yet the non-human ones usually try to make the protagonist engage in it.

I just love that these lifelong friends, who are grown women with active and outspoken, respectable roles in their society, still play games together like when they were kids. I will always say one of my biggest nitpicks with this film is how shafted a lot of the side characters get. Nakoma and Kocoum are the prime examples in this film. Nakoma is supposed to be Pocahontas’ friend and the only named human female character but she’s sidelined by three nontalking animals. And Kocoum could have been this interesting romantic rival that also represents the justified paranoia and hatred of the native tribe who has to choose between love and what’s best for the tribe, and he’s the most boring character in the film despite him have the tragic death in the film that almost started a war. I still like the film but this element definitely needed improvement

Man, this movie actually had some pretty interesting characters. It could have had a lot of potential if they had actually stayed historically accurate. It could have been one of their “darker” films that dealt with heavy topics, like Hunchback. But they just decided to handle it in the worst way possible 🤦‍♀️😒 Also, I thought they were sisters???

That was actually planned, but Jeffery Katzenberg is to blame for the film being the way it is. He wanted it to be a contender for Best Picture at the 1996 Oscars, so the romanticized saturation of Matoaka's story took its course. And Katzenberg wanted to be president of Disney too. I think Michael Eisner made the right call in not giving him that position after Frank Wells died.
