World is going digital? Well, maybe the consumer stuff is going digital but as far as I know in the pro audio and sound realm, analog stuff is still THE prevalent in the quality as it's real not a simulation of something real! Get into programming dude, but as an ex-theoretical physicist I'm telling you that it's absolutely impossible to simulate and mimic every nuances and subtleties of analog sounds into digital, it's scientifically impossible as you are probably aware of it.

Does both have strengths and applications? analog hardware, and digital software? I think he was just commenting on how the market and trends point towards digi takeover but...time always tells. right now peeps who have been proponents of Axe Effects are goin back to tubes.

Well, digital tools in all contexts can be practical and in fact ARE practical. I own an studio nowadays and have multiple digital rack units that are all digital. My point was that for pro audio recording and serious scientific experiments (classical physics and quantum mechanics's instruments are all analog by nature with only digital interfaces) the tools NEED to be analog and are analog. In fact, even digital platforms are at their cores analog. Digital simply means receiving raw -analog- input data, round them based on the initial references that has been designed and set mathematically (maths is nothing but a human construct, numbers do NOT exist in nature), and then expect a specific result. Transistors are all analog by nature and digital systems all use transistors, only difference is the approach and the way the data is being interpreted. For example, anyone can turn on a light in a room with an ON/OFF switch, but a scientist knows that there are almost infinite amounts of events occur between what seems to be the ON state and OFF state. In the digital realm though, we ignore all those rather important in-between states and only expect to have the USABLE ON and OFF positions; that's called digital. Hence, solving mysteries of universe, answering fundamental questions, making the absolute accurate simulation of something really existent is absolutely impossible with digital approach, period. In the context of guitar amps or equipment, one can get close (closeness is always a relative term, by close in this context I mean close to our human ear's capabilities) to almost satisfactory results (Kemper, Axe, etc...), but then again it will ALWAYS remain behind actual analog stuff. Maybe in 50~100 years the computers get so powerful that they could process billion times more raw data than our current modes, but then they still remain digital and limited. Simply because first, it's impossible to acquire all the raw data to then simulate them (audio wave's resolution is literally infinite, which make them counter-intuitively resolution-less in a way), second, even if one get's satisfactory amount of raw data on hand, simulating them is one challenge, making those simulation components interact naturally together in a musical way is another challenge. Add to that the biggest challenge of all which is WE HAVE NO IDEA how tubes are working from a fundamental physics point of view (QM wave/particle duality, entanglement, uncertainty principle, observer effect, etc...). Kemper, Axe Fx and the rest of them are fine and work great, but there is a reason almost all experienced musicians prefer the actual interactive, lively and responsive analog instruments in their rig. Music is NOT only sound, but a very complex multifaceted experience.

If your song sucks who cares if it’s Digital or Analogue?
@konnektlive7 жыл бұрын
If your song sucks you would not be able to afford good analog gears anyway. However, who is to decide if someone's song sucks or not? If the Grammy award is any indication, I think the definition of 'sucks' should be changed altogether ^^
