NAMM 2024 - Artinoise - Re.Corder

Founded just before Covid hit in 2019, Artinoise started a Kickstarter for Re.corder, an electronic wind instrument, which is a hybrid of a digital and an acoustic recorder.
Davide explained that can be played as a regular recorder, and should have wide appeal as the recorder and all its learning materials are taught in schools across the world, but Re.corder also functions as a midi controller, with pressure sensors and capacitive touch sensors around the finger holes, and its unique small and light form factor make it more affordable than its wind controller competition. There is also a lip sensor which allows people with impaired lung capacity to play the re.corder by touch.
It also has a teaching app for apple and android which lets you play expressive saxophone, bagpipe or even violin sounds through the re.corder.

Best demo of the Re.corder I've seen. I didn't know it had so many sensors! Lip touch, tilt, rotate AND breath--plus custom fingering! Nice! A may have to get one.

Yes, making this "Magic Wand" mode is super generous! Children with some disabilities will be very happy to use this instrument in this mode! The price is good! I would order it but we have sanctions.

I've got one which I purchased through the original Kickstarter, and I think the Re.Corder is brilliant. My only gripe is that they tend to produce far more spittle than conventional recorders (so a handy towel nearby is essential!) Buy one. The Re.Corder is fairly inexpensive, and it is a lot of fun! :D

This is truly soooooo amazing. I seriously hope this gets adopted in music education! My mind would’ve been utterly blown if I had been exposed to this at a young age, and even just getting kids thinking about the relationship between their physical movement and creating music is such an important neural pathway to form at a young age. But this thing is so cool, I’m still going to get one and use it for live shows!

This will change how kids look at and learn music. These guys are going to be that market's standard, and, rightly so! I wish I had one of these in school haha. Did you have one? It was fun learning but after awhile we lose interest simple because its not that interesting when you level up...but not now 😂 I'd love to hear a school band with nothing but these and a massive computers and sound systems, one in front and one in the rear of a parade. That is very cool. Have an old EWI wind controller, but it really demands some breath power and care with fingering and I tend not to use it much because of that. I'd be totally interested in such a contemporary update on midi wind controllers. That price is amazingly attractive!

Especially with other contemporary wind controllers nearing $800, this is an absolutely cool development ti the scene. Hell I’d love to grab one of these and use it at live shows! Map a tasty pentatonic scale, do some Pitch bends and you’ll be absolutely cooking

The last time I looked, the least expensive MIDI wind controller on the market was $799. If that hasn't changed, then $199 for this is pretty cheap. But what is the latency? Latency is important. If the latency is in the 2 ms range, I'm buying one.

My question would be if it can produce continuous/stepless pitch in "Magic Wand"- mode instead of fixed notes as shown in the demonstration. I think that would make it a great tool for ear training.

Please explain what is the Z axis control (for midi) None of us understand what is the Z axis movement

I like how you asked so please allow me to try and explain too. It's a performance nuance being represented by spherical coordinates of motion offered within these 3 planes. X can be assigned to Pitch Bend. Y can be Modulation. Z can be Volume, etc, etc... You have 3 physical movements that are assignable and playable as a midi controller. It's kinda genius haha.

@@ifxman I understand what Z axis means... But none of us are able to map it to anything as we do not understand the Z axis movement. Can it be drawn on a paper or shown in video... Instrument reacts to rotation, and elevation, so I guess z axis would be moving it forwards and backward parallel to the horizontal plane... But nothing happens... No one in the community uses it and have disregarded as a bug.

I would have bought 8 of these for my children but I couldn't get past the bad English of the presenter who drove me crazy with his presentation. Trying to explain this contraption to kids is going to be a miserable for me, a middle school band teacher. They are already way ahead on their iPads and music apps. No blowing required.
