Nice reaction. Today is Su-metal's birthday Dec 20th. She is now 24. She's had a professional career for most of her life. In an interview Moa was asked about the things they had to give up, to get to where they are and she said she has no regrets, and it was well worth it. Their management company has managed to keep their private life, very private. and they've had great success so early in life. Especially Moa who even the head of Tower Records in Japan follows her career. He admitted to being a big fan of Moa's. In their own words with Babymetal anything is possible. Great reaction. To answer a couple of things you said first, this video is from June 2013, 'Gimme Chocolate' was recorded a few months later at the Legend 1997 show (Su-metal's 16th birthday) in December 2013 and released 2014, 'Karate' was the lead single for the album released in 2016. Su-metal's vocals are even better live - you have been watching official videos so far, so you haven't heard that yet. When they started in 2010 Su was 12, Yui and Moa were 11 (they are 18 months younger than Su). So in this video, from June 2013, Su-metal (lead vocalist) was 15, Yuimetal and Moametal (backing vocals, harmonies, dance and in charge of hyping and involving the audiences in live shows) were 13 (I think the video was released on Yui's 14th birthday). Today (20th Dec 2021) is Su-metal's 24th birthday. 'Megitsune' regularly tops fan polls for favourite song. It reflects a lot of the Japanese culture starting with the traditional instruments (shamisen I think) in the intro and the lyrics about women being compared to foxes (kitsune - which also explains why the fox masks were so prominent in this video) which in Japanese mythology are able to shape shift and take human form in order to deceive. It is also a bit of a push back against the traditional female role in Japanese society I think - or maybe it is. They are saying that women wearing their make up and hiding their true feelings are not trying to deceive anybody, they are simply trying to please everybody - so they are not kitsune (foxes), they are megitsune (female foxes or vixens) - and they are strong. The breakdown with the pig squeals uses the exact melody of an old and very well known Japanese folk song called 'Sakura Sakura' (Cherry Blossoms). When Su pulled the short blade (tanto) from her microphone she said "Otome wa ... nametara ikan zeyo." (Maidens ... shouldn't be underestimated). The last part of this is a famous quote from a Japanese gangster movie said by the daughter of a gang boss. Much of the video was shot on location at the Asagaya Shinmei Shrine in Tokyo. This has become a place of pilgrimage for BABYMETAL fans visiting Tokyo. The guys at the back with the traditional instruments were dancers belonging to the group run by the lady who did the fan dance during the break down. To see (and hear as they are probably not on the studio albums - we only know one of the guitarists has done two or three of the studio tracks) their live backing band (the Kami Band) you need to see a live performance. A song you need to see - the Legend of 1997 live performance of 'Headbanger' (that is also safe for reactions), 'Ijime, Dame, Zettai' live at Sonisphere 2014 in the UK (their first time in the UK and their first major event as virtual unknowns outside of Asia in front of 60,000 UK metalheads), 'Rondo of Nightmare' live at Budokan, Black Night (a Su-metal solo, but get the 7 minute video for the Kami Band instrumental intro 'Mischiefs of the Metal Gods' ... this was March 2014 and any other songs from that show are also safe). Any and every other song by BABYMETAL - live.

This is probably still my favorite Babymetal song. Although, the live performances oh BxMxC are closing in Megitsune fast. I like the traditional aspects of Megitsune and right from the get-go they stake out their ground. This song is the second track on Babymetal's first album (after Babymetal Death) and is something of a visual introduction to the band. Visually, it leaves no one in doubt of how they want to be seen. First, they acknowledge their Japanese culture with their stylized Japanese instruments and second, through the girls wearing Kimonos. However, in seconds we are visually told that this is a Japanese band and when Yui and Moa spin Su out of her Kimono they are letting us know that while they are proud of their heritage, they are not beholden to some of the societal limitations placed on Japanese women. That de-robing reveals three modern Japanese girls who cannot perform their dancing and singing while restricted by the tight fitting Kimonos (read culture). The girls are showing that they are breaking down some of the traditional barriers placed in front of women in Japan. They then begin an aggressive, open stance dance moves that signal to the world that they may be Japanese, but they will not be bound or held back by societal norms or expectations. That's a pretty strong visual message to pack into the first 20 seconds of the song, and is probably one of the reasons why I will always love this song.

She is the woman performing the fan dance during the breakdown. Thanks for reacting to this one. Megitsune is my jam. It's still my favorite BABYMETAL song, video and choreography. Definitely quintessential BABYMETAL and their most Japanese song. You could even call this Kawaii Japanese Festival Metal. BABYMETAL's producer Koba sent this song back to the song arranger Yuyoyuppe dozens of times before he was satisfied with it. The lyrics were written by MK-METAL (Mikii Watanabe) and NORiMETAL (Norikazu Nakayama). The music is by NORiMETAL.

The guys behind them are actors. While they look like the Kami band that would come later, they're just random dudes pantomiming with traditional Japanese instruments. The person in the kimono and the fox mask is an actor, too. The bridge has the same melody as "Sakura, Sakura," a traditional Japanese song that is ubiquitous over there. The spoken part that happens when Su pulls the knife from the microphone is a line from a 1970s movie and translates - more or less - to "Maidens are not to be underestimated." The game with the stones that the girls are playing is called ohajiki. The thing you called a growl is usually called a pig squeal and is a staple of death/black metal. None of the girls are doing the squeal. And I think that's all I got for this video without getting deep into symbolism and culture.

I know you get suggestions from all 3 of their albums, but it would be great if you progressed through each album from beginning to end. By the time you hit the end of the 3rd one, you'll have seen how much they progressed (matured) over 10 years. There are other bands that hit it big in less than 10 years, but in 2010 BabyMetal was named the 10th greatest METAL band of all-time. Enjoy the trip down the foxhole.
