Hi welcome to Sweden I´am not trying to scare you but it´is better to be prepared. Just some useful tips the winters are usually long cold, dark & don't rely on electric heating or electricity every day. So chop as much firewood as possible, fill your pantry, by lots of candels & if you don´t have a wood fierd stove to cook on look for some alternative. Get the best winter tires for your car keep some extra gasoline for the car at home & in the car. Have some warm blankets, snacks in your car, a small snow shovel & a car charger for the cell phone.

"the winters are usually long cold, dark" Ha-ha. Indeeed IMO the worst is how dark they are. I have lived in Arvidsjaur a couple of years and my mother was born there. Even danced at that hotel in Arvidsjaur where this lovely couple stayed a while in the video. I used to say to my mother that the daylight in the darkest period of the year was so short that You did not notice it until it started getting dark again. It was more like a glimpse of daylight too short to be described as a period of daylight (ok, I AM exaggerating a bit) However I firmly believe that for Your health You should avoid living there in the darkest and coldest period, say 3-4 months, November/December until March. Starting March it becomes sunny and lovely with great skiing for a couple of months and then the summer is incredible of course ! "So chop as much firewood as possible," This is a great tip I think. If You have the time You may be able to pick all that firewood FREE thus avoiding almost all costs for heating your house :-)

Some people don't understand how much the climate varies from north to south. I live in the very south and it's the same distance to Italy as it is to the very north of Sweden. So of course the climate is veeeery different. Winters down here are usually not bad at all. Some years we don't get any snow AT ALL! 😇
@emmiwemmy4 жыл бұрын
@@SnikB property tax isn't a thing here anymore although there are suggestions it could be implemented again. The reason for the low price is mostly that there are no jobs there, no schools nearby etc. So not liveable for most people, unless you have a job that is location independent. As more and more people will likely work remotely, I expect prices will start to rise in these areas.

@@staffanlundberg It must be quite bad to live in Arvidsjaur according to your story. .... with all that darkness and cold ..... and so on. Come on..... glimpse of daylight..... Some tips from a fellow swede, it has been mentioned before; Start chopping as much of that wood as possible. And I mean chop to pieces which are not more than two inches thick and lay them where they are protected from rain and snow (under roof) and off from the ground. A good idea is to buy a hygrometer for your firewood. It should not be more or less than 18 % moisture to burn ideally. Plus anything above that will develop a posionous fume that clogs your chimney. Also buy flashlights and batteries for those and tire chains. Extra gasoline is also great, and make sure you don't store it too long since old gasoline burns bad in the engine. Make sure to buy a outdoor stove or if you have some woodfired stove inside where you can cook if you have a power puttage. If you have those things you will get along fine. Welcome to Sweden, you have many pleasant moments ahead :)
@mrolsen69874 жыл бұрын
If you have a 98 oktan gasoline it doesn't age, not as much enyway.. I always use 98 in My snowmobiles, both because it's more power but most because it doesn't age, when the snowmobiles get put away for the Summer it's almost mission impossible to get them running again if you have them fueled Up on 95, if I have 98 in them there is no problem 👍

Jesus Christ this almost brought me to tears!! Everything in it rings true with me. I live amongst the vineyards of the beautiful valley in Germany now and am establishing myself as a freelancer. My house cost me less than a beach hut in Hunstanton. I spent years living overseas working for big corporates but I was perpetually sick of the corporate bulls**t, so I just threw caution to the wind and followed my dreams. I am waiting to move to New England as my partner had to move back there following the economic crash in Lebanon where he was working. The USA is not my ideal place to live, but we plan on buying an RV and hitting the road for a couple of years. I look at the lives of my friends and family back home and think to myself I am so glad I have my lifestyle. As I once read somewhere, live a piece of your retirement each day - don’t wait until you are too old to enjoy the fruits of your labour, or dead.. Good luck guys. Tip as a Swedish person - install daylight lamps and start taking 10 000 iu d3 + 200 micrograms k2 as well as omega 3 with 2 grams epa a day and keep doing it to keep on top of our fairly dramatic season changes... it will make it a lot easier to adjust -it’s a thing! Great place! So cool! The Big lamp like thing is a heater and a really good one ask at the local gazstation for the right fuel and how to work it ... bring it with you . Great to heat up the house quickly and use under a powershortage ( ps those lamps/ heaters are fairly expensive) you can also in a pinch cook on it.

I also thought it was very kind to suggest the things you did had a loving/caring/prepare your ass or else... feel to the comment so it made me even more intrigued to know that of my unknown LOL.
@annarehbinder75404 жыл бұрын
J. Arm. So basically when you live in Sweden especially northern Sweden the seasons affecting mood is a thing especially when you are not Swedish but if affects Swedish people as well. Vitamin d3 is basically to compensate for loss of sunlight and also is in itself an effective antideppressant, k2 is a substance used to get all of the vitamin d3 absorbed properly and also works to strengthen bones get the kalcium where it’s supposed to be in the bones ( you need it when you take 5000 iu D3 and above ( iu stands for international units and is the amount) Omega 3 is fish oil and in the olden days basically people in Sweden especially northern parts lived off fish -We are talking work contracts stipulating that one day a week you wouldn’t have to eat fish .... In order to absorb D3 properly omega 3 is needed. Can you skip that part yes but it will decrease the efficiency of the d3 and is in it self very valuble to handle seasonal changes and SAD ie seasonal affective disorder and most importantly prevent it. Today it’s really really hard to get enough omega 3 through diet. Epa is a substance which can be found in Omega 3 and is part of how you know how much omega 3 to take since it varies in strength. 2 grams EPA a day is how much is needed to handle seasonal affective disorder ie seasonal deppression to prevent it. Figured it was more cool to tell about this aspect of life rather than let them find out for themselves when everything get’s dark ... the dark is mandatory but SAD is not, and it can be really tough. On the plus side winter is really Beautiful and Swedes tend to get cosy and pretty much hibernate , if possible in front of a fire mixed in with some outdoors sports like skiing when possible.

Congratulation! I hope you'll love the winter in lappland. Its beautifull but long and dark. Just about the winter and the lack of sunlight. Make absolutely sure that you get enough vitamin D both of you but especially Naomi as a young women with darker skin. Lappland is quite a lot farter north than UK so just in case you missed thinking about it. Check with a doctor about a preskription if you need to. Just be carefull if you're more tiered then usual during the dark months. I have seen a few of my students strugeling a lot becase we didn't think about it and before the cause was known to us, them and their familys. Best of luck to you. The house looks lovely.

When renovating old houses use a good mask www.bauhaus.se/varumarken/sundstrom You can get really sick from mousepoo,asbestos and other dust Use a good vaccumcleaner too(industrial) +wetdrought the floors when done You dont have to paint the whole interior white but the roofs for sure and install good LED lightning. Be outside during the day when theres light. Dont get stuck in front of the computer/tv! Chop wood to smaller pieces, very good to have when its dark and cold(nov-mars)

@@NaomiandJack How could you not? :/ Not to be rude but I mean I'm Irish and I find winter difficult and it gets dark at 3-4pm. You're going to be living in a place where you will get sunlight for a few hours max. And darker skin tones usually need more sun because very pale skins have adapted over evolution to produce less melanin so we can handle those winters. You will need a very large dose.

Like so many other people here, I’ve been enjoying watching Naomi and Jack’s videos of their adventures in Sweden. As a US citizen I worked with a summer work permit in Norway for two summers back in the late 80s. Ironically, my first casual job in Europe was in Gothenburg Sweden. I’m amazed that Naomi & Jack bought a functional house for under SEK 100k. Sweet. I’ve managed to save over one third of my SEK 500k goal thus far. I’ve been working on my Swedish comprehension and speak descent Norwegian. I’m so fortunate to now have EU citizenship so I am allowed to work in Sweden. I never had a good work/life balance in the UK, US, Germany or even Austria. However, by owning my own place outright in Sweden, I hope to give my cat a wonderful life and live in peace and harmony with nature…

I myself rented a house for one year and sustained quite a few damaged from mold problems with the foundation. Best of luck ofc but you have nothing to loose from knowing as much about the house as you can. And even though there is a formal law incentive of the seller and broker to inform you, that might not be enough.
