Thank You Naptown Tuner!! My 2.0 TFSI was using oil and loosing oil pressure. Last year I had the oil pressure tested with an external gauge, verified it was about 12 psi low. Warning came on constantly. Was getting worse. 0:03 Recently the EPS light came on and the engine quit lots at idle speed. I stopped driving it. Just before pulling the engine, I had it diagnosed. 15,300 misfires on cylinder 1 & 3, far less on 2 & 4. Time for engine to come out. After doing some research and watching your videos carefully, I knew that the possible problem would likely be: oil pump / balance shaft screens / camshaft bearings / clogged oil galleries / intake camshaft oil solenoid. On engine disassembly, it was obvious that it was none of the above, somewhat to my surprise. The crank journals had all disintegrated, large flakes from the bearings in the sump, filter, and oil pump inlet screen. I managed to clean up all journals. Both balance shaft aft bearings had also disintegrated. Minor damage to intake cam. Got engine rebuild kit with new timing chains, new Kolbenschmit pistons, all gaskets. Replaced oil pump and all oil solenoids that control intake timing. Your videos on timing chain installation were very helpful. I bought the emanual, but these videos are such a good overview. The manual says that so many fasteners need to be replaced, which I never did, just the head bolts. If everything is assembled in sequence, torqued properly, it will be 98% good. The block was given the hot bath treatment, head and valves blasted with walnut shells. (Valves new a few years back due to timing chain tensioner fail) Everything else cleaned, block painted. Engine is now assembled, just need to install it. I will service the transmission first. A 2012 with 220,000 km. Thank you for yours posts!! Audi bill would have been about $12,000 to do this job. The quote for parts alone was $4,800. It will be less than $3000 total doing it myself, with your help!

Sweet Jesus Naptown! This series of videos really help. I was obsessed with the sliding camshaft sections and had a check ball and spring take flight in my garage. I am in the middle of doing this. Couple questions. Cam tray is supposed to match up with cylinder head because they were put together to be bored at manufacturer? Is there a serial number on each to match up? If not sure they are originally matching pair, it is better to remove lifters and rockers and bolt down the cam tray to see if cams would turn normally? anaerobic sealant - Permatex 51813 is $15.42 and the 51031 is $32.55. Both 50 ml. I would use the cheaper one of course but if u happen to know I need the expensive one. Please comment.

Can you “settle a dispute” for me? Do you need to take the chain off the camshafts sprockets and when retime everything when resealing the cam girdle in a car? Or you can just unbolt it, clean up, apply the sealant and bolt it back up?
@NaptownTuner
@NaptownTuner 3 жыл бұрын
The tensioner at least needs pinned first and for most people you should probably redo or replace the chain if it hasn’t had it. You can mark your top 2 links before removal and the bottom link shouldn’t move but it needs to be verified by leveling #1 tdc through the spark plug hole

@Marcus Turner from the little research I’ve done, the black sealant you see is an RTV sealant used around the timing covers and oil pans such as the dirko black. But the green sealant around the cam girdle is an anaerobic sealant different from RTV. It’s made to seal in the absence of oxygen perfect for right tolerances. The green one is audi’s brand and quite spendy. I believe there is a permatex version that will work as well.
