It's easier, so it's popular to imagine anything PHYSICAL... Most people lack the savvy to understand so clearly how Charisma, Wisdom, or other intangible stat's really work in-game... Once you get those kinds of concepts, you can accomplish quite a lot just because the rest of the Players (and often the GM) underestimate what you're really capable of doing. ;o)

I feel like this arguments pretty flawed cause by that logic intelligence is an op stat because you've never played a wizard. Even though I would argue unless you're a intelligence caster the stat is hot trash. I don't think you're really wrong as charisma is really good, but dexterity is almost always a really good stat to have, though like every stat there's an absurd character to abuse it so every stat is good is some situation.

None of you have ever played with a stupidly strong character before. Once you get a strong enough character, things such as walls and doors just become suggestions of places you shouldn't be, but doesn't actually stop you from going to that place, or sometimes just outright demolishing that place if you so feel like it. Having a strong enough character means you can physically move your enemies around and they can't do anything about it, even if they're a size or two larger than your own character. And nothing is more satisfying than watching an enemy utterly piss itself in fear as you pick up objects it couldn't ever hope to lift up itself, only to be used by you as you bludgeon it and its friends to death, or better yet you pick up one of its friends and beat it to death with its own friend, effectively killing two enemies in one go. If you need to use words for some situations...see if your DM will allow your character to use Strength instead of Charisma for Intimidation under the grounds your PC looks like he has tree trunks for arms and looks strong enough to rip a tree out of the ground and beat anything within range to death with it. Just about anything coming out of the mouth of someone like that would likely be intimidating enough as it is.

"Equally stupid and amazing idea" - I specialize in those, at least those that are some mixture of the two. Usually preceded with my catch phrase, "Screw it, rule of cool!" and followed with me having to roll up a new character. I spent a decade with my group before having a character survive a campaign.

I know the joy OP felt with those Natural 20s. Last week, November 25th of 2020, My Cleric of Sarenrae, a Half Orc named Tarak Ember (fire and healing domains) for a Rise of the Runelords game in Pathfinder 1e, pulled off something similar. We had essentially gotten swarmed on both sides by goblins, heading into the dungeon at the end of Book 1 (which the dm had been adding Homebrew throughout the game, not purely by the book). So, after handling a fight on the sevond floor, me and the wizard went back to floor one to see an NPC and make sure they were safe still. Well, this is when we met the goblins that were comjng from behind, the Thistletop Tribe. And, it’s when we learned that I could talk to them, in Abyssal. So, I calmed the one that actually was at the stairs, and had the wizard go to the party, while I went off on my own, hoping to AT LEAST distract the goblins. I met Ripnugget, the leader of the tribe, and began to speak with him, learning the plight of his tribe and their hate for my cleric’s home. A home that, on occasion, treated him just as poorly. So, rather than focus into delaying a fight, I began to speak truly as a cleric of Sarenrae and find a way to make peace. The goblins were hesitant, but seemed to begin warming up. Roll Diplomacy. It’s at this time, I want to mention my cleric has 10 Charisma, and only 1 rank in Diplomacy, for a +4 to the roll. The DM, between my race and roleplay, gave me a +2 bonus based on the circumstances, for +6. So, I set up the dice roller on Roll20. And I Nat 20d. 26 total. The entire discord chat went nuts with joy and excitement right then. And I was breathing heavy with shock, relief, and a massive grin. We just finished the dungeon a week after that, on December 2nd 2020, and will be making our way back to town soon. And I have a meeting to help set up to help make arrangements between the goblins and the people of Sandpoint for mutual aid and protection. And hopefully we can find the goblins some women so they actually have their numbers back soon. So again, I feel the pure joy that OP had when he Double Nat 20d woth that dragon, even if I only got a single one myself, as we both managed to save our parties from potential TPKs.

I had a similar situation happened. My group, and I was the DM, did an encounter where they had a white Abishai, rider on a white ancient dragon. The main bad guy sent them to defeat these heroes. During the fight they were able to defeat the rider, with some well-placed range attacks. And the bard, of the party casted heat metal on the helmet that the ancient white dragon was forced to wear. Because the rider was no longer there... it’s next turn was to rip it off and then it was broken free from the magic. It’s snarled angrily but was also placed in a force cage so we could not leave the space. Through some very terrible roles and negotiation they were able to finally calm down the white dragon and say they would let it free, go back to it’s home in the cold mountains. The fact that two players were terrible at persuasion checks and they were able to narrowly survive the effect of this thing getting extremely angry was comical but at the same time a huge warning that if they only expecting fighting to be the way to win, death was 1 breath weapon away.

All praise to the Dice Gods for the existence of the "Nat 20"! I pretty much ALWAYS use Random Encounters when I DM. Granted, I eventually developed a homebrew blend of Random & Set encounters that I use as my "Random" encounters. (Hey! If I put all the work & creative energy into creating an encounter with a number of SG-1 Replicator style Constructs are marching along & are building a castle in the middle of nowhere, with their bodies serving as the bricks. . . the players are DAMN well gonna SEE IT!) lol Nothing more frustrating & demoralizing than coming up with something you feel is really "cool" and the table never sees it!

I use random encounters (sort of), D&D 3.5e. I set up more encounters than the party will have to deal with when travelling and then use those as a sort of chart to see which ones the party actually get. The one they got that paid off the most was a single injured pseudodragon. It took a liking to the party rogue (also NG). The little guy has come up clutch in encounter after encounter.
@homerman76
@homerman76 3 жыл бұрын
Thinking about random encounters reminds me of my first DnD campaign. During our first session, the party got split up in this big forest because of a trap from some Kobolds. The DM had us roll to see what everyone was going to encounter, the Druid and Rogue came across and Owl Bear that had been injured and the druid went to work healing the creature, while our halfling bard got lucky and just got a leisurely stroll through the forest. Then it came to me, the Dwarf Barbarian who just started playing DnD, and I got to stare down a Dire Boar the DM didn't expect me to survive facing, though as you can imagine, I did :P. Just for the some context, I'm one of those crazy guys who thought it would be fun if at some point I got to ride something like a bear, and to me, this boar wasn't and enemy, it was an opportunity. So the encounter starts and the boar charges, so what do I do, I roll to catch it and grapple it, success. A few turns later, I've broken this boar into submission, and so when the group meets up at the edge of the forest, they all get watch me exit the forest riding on top of a Dire Boar (a mount I would keep for the rest of the journey and became rather attached to.)

For an idea what Castlerake is capable of, it is the destroyer of barriers. Stick it in a castle wall, it will crumble. Unless it's a barrier created by a Spell of Legend, it will dispell, and even those barriers will take a heavy toll. There is a very good reason it was split into many pieces and scattered all over the world.

Bluffing mechanics in Palladium are different than D&D players might be used to but I used familiar terms so people wouldn't be confused. That said, if you must know, Rangus' charisma was actually kind of shite but in Palladium bluff/persuasion was based on percentage dice and iirc, both rolls were below 5, which my brother counted as a critical success in his games.

Back when I use to DM, I used random encounters. However, if something like a dragon were to be rolled I would always have it be seen off in the distance. That way the party decided whether or not to fight it. if they died fighting it, it was their own fault. The dragon would have never even been aware of them if they hadn't gone after it. Of course... they always tracked it back to it's lair. "We're going to sneak in and steal some of it's hoard!" "So, you're tired of playing these characters and want to roll up new ones. Gotcha!."

Well, rolling a custom campaign in the wilderness of the Chult, I kinda have to, otherwise it wouldn't feel very 'wild' and dangerous, would it? But the full coven of green hags at 3 newbe lvl 2 character was beyond rough especially at night. (I sent only one and even then...)

Palladium fantasy. Ahh how I miss you. Still think rifts is the best rpg universe idea ever though. Also red dragons are mid teir they might have been able to take it.

Actually, there is actually a D&D wolf humanoid race (I think it's called Lupin) that has deeper roots in D&D canon than Tabaxi.

Currently, we are playing a 5E game. Mu husband is DM, My daughter a halfling ranger, I'm a half-elf mute bard, and the other 2 at our table are a tabazy rouge and an elemental Claric. My husband rolled a random encounter for the night, my daughter's character found a Tarrasque Egg, hatched it. And now runs around with a Tarrasque baby in her bag of holding. Our campaign is officially broken.

The first time was against a random goblin I rolled an attack nat 20 chopped clean in half.. the second was against a bug bear rolled a nat 20 and decapitated him threw his head at a goblin

I had a time when I was new and playing d&d 3.5 I was the mage and we were in the middle of a dungeon and walked into a big room at this point we were lvl1 or 2 and the necromancer said I look into the pit in the middle of the room he dose and he falls in and goes imedeitly unconscious and then we throw I torch down and notice a slithering shape just outside the light then our cleric starts to make a plan then I realised slow falling is a raneged spell and we had the cleric go in the pit with slow falling and Chanel's Then we fight the acid dragon in the pit that is how my uncle the necromancer go a rep for falling in dragon pits he lived to fall in 2 more pits and change to a hard

Although this would make for poor story telling. That dragon could have easily flown as high as it needed and then rolled over with a good shake. Let everyone fall to their deaths and rake up some chow.

Complete with cut scenes?! What? Isn't a cutscene in a video game where the game makers take control of your character and tell you what it does....isn't that like exactly antithetical to the point of d&d? not the first time I've heard of someone having cutscenes in a game, but I've never heard of it being implemented well

Yup, still the same voice for every single sentence. Still not sure if you're a real person or an AI reading a script.
