Silver dragons would have killed the black dragon no questions asked. Brass dragons are more nutrul in this case and more friendly by extension. Also he might only know of brass dragons as the most friendly after all he has been having to do research on each dragon as he encounters them and probably hasn't encountered or even thought to look up anything about sliver dragons just yet. If I recall, slavery is extremely illegal in the river kingdoms area where this story is set, so honestly I'd have straight up arrested that merchant, seized his goods and seen to it he got justice. Kind of surprised that didn't happen. Ignoring that part, oh you better believe that guy (and his noble patron) is going to be in a world of hurt. Foreward: my knowledge of the setting is limited to what i've picked up from the Pathfinder: Kingmaker PC title and cursory reading of the lore elsewhere (PC has ungodly World Lore bonuses so I don't find it TOO metagame to brush up with that in mind) Choral Rogarvia, the most noteworthy conqueror in Brevoy and surrounding terrains I've picked up on didn't even enslave dragons, the 2 red dragons that supported his efforts were allies, not enslaved/dominated. If the biggest swinging Johnson in the region wasn't up to going toe-to-toe with Dragons, I don't think a minor or even up-and-coming noble house without some SERIOUS financial backing could dominate 3 dragons, much less the fact that Choral only had 2 supporting him and he was a damned king. There's also the fact of the matter that Dragons are intelligent creatures. I sincerely doubt they'd take 3 of their kind being enslaved kindly.

Depending on the morality, intelligence, and foresight of the character, that could actually be a legit hard choice. The short sighted and greedy might wish to continue their alliance considering how well the farm was doing. Especially considering unless he becomes a lich, the summoner would never live to see his family full grown. It took 14 years just for Onyxia to reach large dog size. Buuuuut, logically and morally, rescuing the dragons and expanding his family made infinitely more sense as now he has.powerful, beloved, family who would protect him to their dying breath. I hope that they recover and so happy to hear the little guy made it trough if just barely. I was so scare for him. As for the merchant he tried to solve it peacefully and gave him a pretty good deal. Granted he wasn't offering to pay it all up front but he was willing to give him almost everything for those eggs and that was still quite a large sum, and then some for latter. I like the fact that you pointed out that even under those circumstances if it wasn't for the consideration of Onyxia considering right and wrong in this instance and that this event would change her life for ever you never would have stolen them. That shows a really interesting facit that a lot of modern story telling in every form of media doesn't really explore these days and I would really like to see it more. That one moment where you do something crazy you wouldn't normally do and despite the pain you know is coming you do it anyway because you know if you don't someone will suffer a lot more. I love how this all played out but I hope the people eventually learned, if not in the elfs life span then at least the dragon, that the merchant was actually being unreasonably cruel and someone ends up checking it out for them selves to find out if the rumors are really true. How fun would it be to role up to this animal farm with a party and have them try to attack the black dragon only for the bronze dragons, elf and staff come to its defense and demand what the heck do they think they are doing. Escpicailly the elf saying leave my daughter alone and the bronze dragons calling out don't hurt sisy. lol I don't know why I love that. Not the trying to hurt the dragon part, I don't want her to get hurt after all. Just the players reactions to this like "what the heck is going" on would be priceless. I think the difference between the dragons and the owlbears and other animals is that the dragons a sentient whereas the animals are more like dogs and horses where yeah, you can have some sort of relationship with them (I love my dog and call him my child) but it's not quite the same.

"Would I have robbed the merchant of the eggs?" I can say without hesitation that, yes, I would have and I have a tendency to be lawful/neutral good when I play me some D&D. Because if you really stop to think about it, the only way he could have come into possession of the eggs to begin with is if he either purchased them from someone or he somehow managed to steal them himself. Dragons, even in egg form, are not property to be bartered and sold. They are sentient, intelligent creatures (or will be eventually). Selling them like that is equivalent to Slave Trading, in my opinion. Any Mother Dragon would go to the ends of the material plane to safeguard her children. So, I think its safe to say the merchant more than likely came to have them by more or less unsavory means. Besides, he did offer to pay for them slowly over time. Its not like he took them and offered nothing.

Nope, I’d have made them “DISAPPEAR” if reasoning with them failed, as I would argue the sentience of the dragons makes them equal to the races of man and elves, and therefore enslaving them is highly immoral. And if questioned about Onyxia I would respond with the honest truth and ply it as further proof of the virtue of instead raising a dragon to the righteous path, and with Onyxia being born the antithesis of righteous yet still headed that way, that they would be far more valuable to society as a whole. Furthermore a dragon raised to the righteous path would of their own accord protect the lands of all men, elves, dwarves, and any other sentient race of generally neutral/good beings. Then conclude that as such I raising the dragons would then also be of far greater value to the noble as they could instead of being pets on display, or beasts of burden, Noble paladin/knight like entities who would of their own accord protect and safeguard his people with their full might, cunning, wisdom, and knowledge.

I think there's a good chance my last character would've stretched the (local) law - a lawful good knight (3.5) - to see he got those eggs, because the culture he's from abhors slavery. The character before him, a neutral good ranger, probably would've only made his decision after his daughter made such an impassioned plea. Then again, he's a high-wis character AND the son of a merchant, so he probably would've just bartered harder to get what he wanted.

By the point they've become too large for the farm, it's likely the surrounding businesses and villages will recognize they are more-or-less decent creatures. If the Narrator's business is truly so prosperous he has merchants coming from leagues around? He's probably a particularly common figure among the local populace. As such, the villagers would likely vouch for them or at least do their best to argue their case that these aren't malicious creatures. There's also the fact of the matter that 3 of these dragons are, by their default nature, Lawful good. Now sure, that is a tad meta-gamey to simply announce "They're X Alignment" and I personally loathe that in stories usually. However if a race has a tendency towards being peaceful or even better yet, helpful to the surrounding community, I doubt a Paladin would be looked upon favorably for slaying it. They are intelligent creatures that seek knowledge, if anything they'd be a massive boon to the communities around them. Any LG paladin would be less inclined to see the same in a Black dragon, of course, but if an entire wing of Bronze dragons have taken it in as one of their own and even more-so consider it their kin, this is all the more reason why I loathe "X is Y alignment", because there are always exceptions to the rule. One of my favorite stories in fact entails a 'family' of vampires who are by and large hospitable and even downright protective nobles who look after their workers. Sure, they may feed time to time on the peasants but such people are given time to rest and extra rations to help recover.

@Rixoli4 жыл бұрын
@@Darkinu2 Forgive me, I'm writing what I remember from high-lights of the story but it was (ironically enough) how the setting's BBEG came to be, I read this probably close to a decade ago, I remember bits 'n pieces more with each telling: Said BBEG started as a humble peasant, Marcus (as i've forgotten the names), as is tradition in his village, Marcus had his future told by the local witch.....who comes out proclaiming he will one day grow up to become a terrible conqueror at the helm of an army of the dead. Naturally this disturbs most everyone....but he's just a boy, and the witch has been wrong before. Even still, the stigma hangs over his head, years go by, no one will befriend him, the local merchants loathe to do business with his family. He's never done anything wrong, never raised a hand against anyone....culminating on his 18th birthday, when he is to become a man. A mob gathers outside his family's home with rope and torches, it's pretty clear they are here to kill him So Marcus ducks out a back window, his last glimpse of home is watching the only people who ever cared for him burnt alive in their own house. His own village tracks him for days through the local woods leading him to a cliff on one side, the hunters in the other.....hoping for nothing more than a quick death he jumps.... Awakening weeks later in an incredibly comfortable bed, his wounds dressed, in a room who's furnishings and contents are probably worth more than his entire village's possessions combined. Beside him is a young pale girl, the youngest of a noble family, Sofia...she explains he was found washed up along the river near one of the fishing villages they oversee, and Marcus was brought here. Grateful for the hospitality (He'd never even met the lords that ruled over his own village), Marcus offers to work to repay their kindness. It's no secret even from the get-go that Sofia has taken a shine to the young peasant boy and the feeling is definitely mutual, so she teaches him to read and write, explaining to her father that someone who could help with the day-to-day finances would be a boon....the fact that it gave them time alone in the library didn't hurt either. As Marcus' grasp of the written word grew, he started towards a particular portion of the library's contents...particularly on magical creatures, which shined a different light on the family he'd come to know and respect for several months now.....It occurred to him that he'd never actually dined with the family. He'd assumed it was because of his status.....then it also occurred to him that they never left their manor during the day....also there was not a single mirror or other note-worthy reflective surface in their home...... Days go by and he confronts the man of the house about this, who admits that yes, all 30+ family members of their noble line are vampires. They do not feed on their subjects til' death, these are people that have come under their rule expecting their protection. They certainly feed, of course, but only enough to sustain themselves, and often among multiple 'victims'. They choose healthy adults of different professions, so that the fishers may still bring in the nets, that the fields are still well kept. Many of the family's youngest are skilled healers, able to look for signs of sickness to prevent inadvertently spreading illness among their workers. Those who feed the noble family are instead fed from the family's own "Tithe" they take, ores and other non-consumables are exported to sell to other kingdoms to fund their respectable lifestyle (to keep up good appearances), half to be turned into rations that those whom they feed from may recover quickly, along with several day's rest to aid in healing. In return, their subjects are offered sanctuary, neighboring kingdoms from which many of their servants are refugees are rife with bandits, torn apart by wars and monsters roam freely across the land. Within the vast stretches of land this family rules, such threats are few and far between. No bandit would dare tread on the lands of lords for whom men such as them are often left dead or stark-raving mad alongside the road as a warning. He explains to Marcus that he will understand if this upsets him, that he is free to leave right now and consider his 'debt' to them repaid, on the express condition he never reveal what they are, though they are merely trying to use their gifts to help others, most will see them as cruel monsters. Pondering this for a few minutes, Marcus agrees.....on the express condition he be allowed to marry Sofia. Taken by surprise by the young man's courage plus his willingness to help, he agrees. Days go by and Marcus is wandering about one of the villages, it's laborers making their own efforts to prepare for the big day coming up in just a few months. As he's roaming about, one of the workers asks if he has a dowry in mind for his wife's family.....It's obvious to him that his father-in-law to be expected no such thing, nor did his fiance, he was a man of simple means, even if he COULD read and write now (by itself a rarity among peasants) and he spent the next several months studying feverishly through their libraries, eager to find something worthy of the woman he loved to show his love for her and respect for her family... As his studies continued he was drawn ever closer to the part of the library he'd ventured into so many months ago, where he found their dark secret....and he found the gift worthy of them. The night of the wedding arrives, dozens if not hundreds of villagers have gathered to see this unusual event. The Patron and Matron and their daughter awaits Marcus at the altar.....yet none can find him......and then they hear it....boot-steps in the distance, scores of them....Revealing Marcus at the fore of an army, lead by much of the family itself, it's ranks filled with the dead but just as many are his own subjects....Marcus has been studying Necromancy it is revealed, and as he kneels before his beloved wife to be he offers her his vow: The world has scorned him, shown him nothing but hatred and cruelty his whole life....until he found his new family...a family who rules over the worst off and has built a thriving society out of mutual respect and care for one another....this is the family the world deserves, these are the rulers the world deserves...and so his vow is that he will show the world their care and compassion, they will see the beauty in his wife's gifts and good heart, whether by good will and words they have shown him....or if he must by force of arms. TL;DR Good family of vampires inspires a inspires a man with a self-fulfilling prophecy to be a 'dark lord', in reality he just wants everyone to be treated equally.

Using the conversion rate I found on a reddit post about Pathfiner coin values compared to real world currency, the merchant set the price at 4 million dollars for all 3 dragon eggs. 180,000 gold pieces would be a massive dragon hoard owned by a dragon who has lived for millenia, and no random nobleman could ever afford such a price. It is also most certainly a scam considering the average agreed price for a dragon egg in the D&D system is around 10k gold.

might be a couple years late to the party, but the merchant incident seemed like a chaotic vs lawful decision. Taking the eggs forcefully led to a chaotic alignment. I personally would've instead taught Onyxia the value of people's hoards, of how to gather insight and Intel on how the merchant acquired the eggs and what he intends to do with them (we don't know if the merchant might've taken good care of these eggs, much like OP took care of Onyxia). The merchant also came with good tidings, bringing rocs for OP. Maybe Onyxia and OP could've visited merchant's own ranch and visit the brass dragons when they hatched from time to time to keep the merchant accountable. So many avenues for a different parenting lesson on how the world works. OP's choice leads to chaotic good murderhobo heroes. Lawful good route would've taught Onyxia how to actually live in a society through peace and diplomacy.
