Shikamaru’s character was well written, possessing a strong sense of duty while having a great understanding of humanity. He was the most mature of his generation, so he understandably felt the need to stay strong, but his deep emotional depth was illustrated by the grief he felt over Asuma’s death.

Iruka taught me... not to judge people by their reputations but by their personalities. Haku taught me... that there is no good or evil when you're protecting the ones you love. Neji taught me... that if you leave your pride behind you can change your destiny. Rock Lee taught me... that hard work beats talent. Kakashi taught me... that teamwork and friendship stand above the rules. Hinata taught me... that love is worth fighting for. Sai taught me... that a life without feeling isn't worthwhile. Sakura taught me... that weakness is a choice, not an excuse. Gaara taught me... how painful loneliness can be and how love can change someone. Nagato taught me... that revenge and hatred only lead to more revenge and hatred. Asuma taught me... how important it is to take care of the next generation. Shikamaru taught me... that sometimes you even have to do the things that bother you the most. Might Gai taught me... that it doesn't matter what other people say about you. Minato and kushina taught me... that parent's love beat all else. Sarutobi taught me... that problems should be solved with kindness rather than with violence. Sasuke taught me... that you should not only dream about things but actually achieve them. Itachi taught me that... sometimes you have to make sacrifices for the greater good. Tsunade taught me... to never abandon the living for the dead. Jiraya taught me... that you must never give up your faith in humanity and your hope of peace. Obito taught me... that it is never too late to revert to the right way. Madara taught me... that peace is no peace without freedom. And Naruto... well, we all know that Naruto taught us a lot. but the most important thing is: no matter what happens in your life... NEVER GIVE UP !!! BELIEVE IT!

2:50 a poignant detail: Shikamaru only buries himself into his knee when his dad says "I'm proud of you" - it's a callback to the original series when Shikamaru only breaks down when he learns that his teammates will live. Shikamaru only breaks down when faced with comfort, and I think it speaks a lot about how rare kindness, compassion and comfort is dished out in the shinobi world.

After rewatching this scene, I realized Shikaku’s final line,” I’ll pick up the pieces.” isn’t just about the shogi board and pieces knocked over. He’s talking about his duty as a father to not only pick up his son during hardships but to also rebuild and teach his son to handle the losses of loved ones.

Shikamaru is my favorite character. His ability to keep calm, stay rational, and be able to lead under pressure always inspired me. He also made mistakes. Which made him all the more relatable. I appreciate Shikamaru. And the way that his character developed.

Shikamaru is in my opinion one of the most realistic and well fleshed out characters in the entire show. Like I compare him to Raimundo from Xiaolin Showdown, who wasn't the main character he was just a really deep secondary character, but in the end he became the leader of the group. I honestly thought it would have been an incredible ending if Shikamaru had become Hokage rather than Naruto, at least as first
@jaho.1249

@pcrassen4975

Yepppppppp. It's a very parental moment altogether that's capped up perfectly with that line in the end. The whole scene was Shikaku's play to force his son to confront his grief and feel the pain he is trying to escape. And once he finally breaks Shikamaru into letting it out, he knows that as a father, as a parent, it's his job to push his son in the right direction and be there to pick up the pieces of him once he's let it all out.

And then his father dies later on...Poor Shikamaru. One of the best-written and underrated characters in the show, it’s a damn shame. Naruto gets a lot of shit but at its apex it has a lot of amazing character writing: Shikmaru, Naruto, Gaara and arguably his two best characters, Itachi and Sasuke.

I honestly think people say they hate it for the sole reason of annoying the fandom. U either love it or u haven't seen it, there's no in between. There are so many amazingly written characters, the plot is amazing, the animation is amazing it fr changed me as a person. Here are some more characters that u didn't mention that I think r written super well: Kakashi and Obito (both as individuals and as a duo), shisui and minato (ik people who have them as their fav characters despite shisui and minato having barely any screen time) Rock Lee ad Guy sensei (super inspiring and my fav characters in og naruto) Madara and Pain (Best villains in fiction along with Obito idc), Sai, Tsunade, Jiraiya and ofc Naruto who I believe is criminally overlooked as a character despite being the mc. He is truly a perfect mc no cap. Asuma is also underrated as his death scene was one of the saddest deaths in Naruto and I believe him and Shikamaru have the best teacher-student relationship in the anime (there I said it). I could go on. Goatruto is a masterpiece period.

Shikimaru is by far the best character in Naruto. Every other character was a parallel or reincarnation of another character, or existed to make a point (ie Neji, so Naruto could prove hard work could beat natural geniuses). But Shikimaru is completely his own.

Your 1st sentence can be agreed upon; Everything else requires 27% more critical thinking skills for that to come out correctly; If ya make a claim like that about Neji, then you can make one for Shikamaru, as well; (i.e., Shikamaru existed to serve Naruto as his, "Wise Counsel/Wise Advisor;" AKA, to prove that even the hardest of workers need a genius by their side, to pick them back up from the slump of a dump that they're in; Both Shikamaru AND Neji were geniuses; They were both used in different ways, however, to highlight specific paths of helping Naruto, and for the completion of the story; The story would not be complete without both Shikamaru and Neji;

I actually love shikamaru, cause of his lazyness and smartness at the same time. I love how smart he is and always makes a plan before attacking, like Itachi. I love all characters in Naruto and i dont want to see them in pain even if they were villain or from another village like Grandma Chiyo, i cried during Grandma Chiyo fading to death and how Naruto says “He got a little tired, so she sleeps a bit, after she sleep we will get her back to their village.” not knowing that Grandma Chiyo is actually dead. Almost all of the Akatsuki deaths led mo to tears especially Itachi.

It's not so much that Shikamaru is lazy. At the time, he was surrounded by so many people focused on working hard at things that seemed to come easily to him. Ino doing what she think is hard work to get Sasuke to notice her over Saukra, Sakura doing the same, Rock Lee doing endless amounts of pushups to prove he is worthy of being a fine shinobi even with all of his "deficiences" Naruto going on and on about his dreams.... Everyone has goals they want to work hard to fulfill... But...What happens when it all just makes sense... where do you go when you don't want to be burdened by other peoples problems and struggles? When you don't want to keep having to stop what you're doing to help other people out with their issues when the solutions are plain enough for you to see, but you know they won't take your advice so you don't even bother and just figure it's easier to just let yourself get swept up in whatever plan is going on and use your intelligence to keep these poor dumb bastards alive? It isn't that Shikamaru is lazy, it's that he's resigned himself to a support role because he has chosen a life where he can't just coast on his laurels, so to speak

Great video man. Shikamaru is my favorite character and I really resonate with his personality. Smart, logical, but sometimes not in tune with my emotions or suppressing my emotions. The brain is only the steering wheel. The heart is the gas pedal. Emotions drive us. Without emotions, we are not human.

This scene hits hard, after the passing of my grandmother. I slowly shut myself off and became emotionless, i hardly slept. I would sit up at night pondering the thoughts of death and why it happens, I would descend further and further as the months pass. Till the night of my birthday, I cried because the built up pain and anger I had felt for days. My friends were there to help and let me cry, though the pain still exists I keep getting better.

The description says overlooked, but this is easily the most memorable moment and event from shipuden for me. (Probably biased because shikamaru was one of my fave characters frkm the show) Loved the video!

I’m not as smart as Shikamaru, and the situations aren’t as dire, but I know what it’s like to struggle in leadership, and make mistakes that result in your teammates losing out. It’s a horrible feeling, but it makes him so relatable it’s amazing. I think it’s because he’s not some crazy powerhouse like Naruto, he’s more realistic and human than the rest of the characters.
