in a squat they say the quads are the agonist, is that in the concentric phase? be cause in the lowering phase the quads are not contracting. the material says agonist contract, but the quads lengthens when lowering.

Brandon, you're correct in that the quads are the agonist which simply means they are responsible for the entire movement pattern (up and down, concentric and eccentric). The quads are contracting both on the way down (eccentrically) and on the way up (concentrically). Don't confuse the terminology. Agonist/Antagonist refer to muscle "responsibility" during a movement(s). Concentric/Eccentric refer to types of contractions (muscle shortens under tension or muscle lengthens under tension). Hope that helps!!
