Even when he resigned after losing a war, people themselves protested to return him to power. There are shameless ppl who do so many atrocios things as leaders yet resignation is out of question. We non arabs also have a lot to learn from this gentleman.

It is silly to blame Nasser for lack of democracy. True democracy never existed in Egypt before or after Nasser, so why blaming him? He planned to establish true democratic system after the war (that took place after his death), he also planned to resign. his popularity was so overwhelming in Egypt and the entire Arab world ; he enjoyed at least 95% support (most probably more, I lived in his time) and that gives him a democratic mandate.

He imprisoned political opponents, gave nearly all political power to the Egyptian military, and failed in nearly all of his ambitions. Nasser left Egypt in ruins. He was a failure

Democracy is difficult to entertain while leading a revolution against the feudal elites and especially while at war against great powers. Strong and efficient leadership is necessary. Immediate democracy is like an open invitation to foreign interference to subvert popular policies led by homegrown patriotic leadership. Liberation of the homeland and policies for the working classes are relevant, the dismantling of the feudal system is relevant. These are more important than "democracy", which in the western connotation is anything but democratic. Democracy to them means privatization and recolonization via foreign investment and finance capital monopoly.

@@supra1722 Actually his intentions to bring true democracy when the revolution settles in but his enemies were after him until they brought about his early death in 1970. Even then he left his country as an industrial power house with the same economic growth as that of south Korea. His time was the true golden age of Egypt when every citizen had free healthcare and education up to university level. Culture (publications and all forms of arts ) flourished in his time as never before or after. I lived in Egypt those years and know well how the country was. One comment says “he failed in all his ambitions” NO he did not: Independence, industrialisation, social justice and land reforms and Arab unity were achieved but were reversed by leaders after his death

@@ibnrawandi2713 i whole heartedly agree. Nasser is the hero of the third world and was the hero of many young men who led great free officer-led revolutions following his lead like the late Al Gaddafi, who was a Nasserist till his last breath. The third world remembers Nasser with love and looks to Sadat as the reactionary traitor he is. There was never and may never again be such a record-breaking mass display of mourning and respects as there was on that tragic day in 1970 when Egypt, the Arab nation, Africa, and the third world were left fatherless and orphaned by Abdel Nasser's passing. My argument was that Egypt didn't need 'democracy', so long as a leader of the people (like Nasser) and revolutionary leadership was in power. Egypt was a dictatorship of the peasants and workers and common man with Abdel Nasser, the son of an honest postman, as the president to work for their concerns.

Despite the unprecedented attack of Western media, Nasser is still alive. We are proud that he defeated the Great Britain twice. The first was during Sues war which lead to British exit from the arena of the great empires. The Second was in 1961 during Yamen war when Nasser reduced the area of British colonial empire by kiking British outside the Arab land. Nasser is the enemy of England and America and the hero of Arab and Africa.

Nasser, much like Jawaharlal Nehru, exhibits the problem of having a good leader who is limited by the characteristics of his regime. Having come to power with a military coup, and having, as the first measures, secured the army against a second coup, he found himself lost in perpetual struggle against the military security officers (led by Am'r, who did more damage than any Israeli spy ever could have dreamed of), and crippled in his ability to carry out his program. This program may have had flaws, but had Nasser been able to actually rule Egypt, as opposed to being hamstrung by the coteries of military-intelligence 'supporters', he might have actually accomplished what Egypt needed, socialism notwithstanding. But he was not a radical, and it took him literally the rest of his life, in power, to remove these men and reunify the power. By that time, it was too late. For a great analysis of this first period, see Soldiers, Spies and Statesmen, by Hazem Kandil.

Nassar wasn't religious; he was socialist. That was why hew was assassinated (though failed) by the Muslim Brotherhood (the same who assassinated Anwar Sadat. Even today the military government of Egypt is at war with Muslim Brotherhood. This tells you Egypt is always at struggle between the Muslim fantastics & secular ones(the democratics & socialists). I've a feeling the Muslim fantastics will one day take over the power in Egypt.
