I would add a few tips. Bend the knees. Wear protection, especially wrist guards; also a rated helmet if around cars, hills, going fast, rough terrain, or while learning a “dangerous” trick; full padding if a fall could be truly injurious. Carve while dancing on the board - it helps with balance, and looks cool. Learn the mirror of a trick on the other side soon after (switch, if you will), or even while learning a new trick on one side. Push switch (not just practice how), alternating after every several minutes, when cruising for a long while. And of course, always check your board, and “tune” if necessary with standard skate tool(s). Bearings should be kept reasonably clean, dry and free rolling - learn recommendations (if any) as far as grease or wax is concerned - and replace bearings when truly worn. Wear firm, flat footwear or rugged sandals; and practice barefoot, too, to toughen the feet and feel the ground. Try someone else’s board (with permission, of course) to “mix it up” for more varied muscle memory. I know some this may seem obvious to an experienced skater, but it may not be to a newbie.

It makes me so sad that this is the top rated comment, when on other videos put out by men, the top rated comments like dumb jokes or thank yous or literally anything other than advice. The person who made this video is so obviously an expert and I don’t know why everyone is so quick to upvote a commenter who is just giving basic advice that has been said a hundred other places on the internet. I loved your video Natalie, thank you for sharing your unique takes on learning to longboard that have been so obviously been and crafted built over years of practice. All y’all who upvoted this guy should just go watch his videos if you want to hear his advice so much… oh wait he doesn’t have any…

I don't think a lot of people know this, but you keep learning the stuff you're thinking about even while you aren't doing it. There's tons of information your brain keeps while failing over and over again, and sometimes sleeping on something or leaving it alone is actually more helpful than throwing yourself at it again! It gives time to process, condense the information, and time to forget habits or practices that didn't help. Plus, I always find that I think about way fewer different things after taking a break, which helps because the rest happens without conscious thought.

Learning to fall is pretty key. I kind of adapted break falls from Judo/Jiu Jitsu to skating and it works pretty well, plus you get funny looks from people who see you doing weird ninja rolls.

Thank you for your video. Best piece of advice I heard anywhere on any video was you saying learn to push goofy or opposite of your dominant stance. I just got a long board and haven't skated in 20 years. I started learning to push and ride both ways due to your advice and it has helped out TREMEDOUSLY.

I was skating the other weekend with my kids and I took a really bad fall after trying to power slide around a corner. I had bloody knees and a scraped elbow, got up, wiped off the dirt and rocks, and kept on skating. I told my kids that it’s ok to fall and that sometimes the falls hurt, but you can’t let temporary pain stop you from getting back up.

I'm actually very nervous about skating. I don't wanna go out at all because I'm worried someone might watch me practice. I have no idea why but I really don't like it when someone watches me do something. Especially because I'm a beginner and suck really bad. So I'm worried about going out to practice.

Same but the only way out of it is to always remember that absolutely nobody cares. I live in NYC, and people do way more outrageous shit than little old me stumbling off the board as I practice foot braking - and guess what, I don't care and neither does anyone else. It doesn't matter. Do what you enjoy :)

I've experienced your advice on returning to a trick later with music. I started on recorder to piano to trumpet with lessons from Allen Colin and stayed with that for about 20 years until I could no longer keep up the muscular tension needed in the lower back ribcage muscles, so I turned to the fife when someone gave me a brass fife hand made in Afghanistan and with Sir james galway's 2min:27sec video, I learned the correct embrasure and begane to average 10 hours a day for 8 weeks l; no break. After, I stopped cold and didn't do it for a few months and when I came back, I was rested and sounded as good and even better after the break.

It's kinda personal preference, but I think most people start of tight and after a while loosen the trucks more. At that moment they have have already more confidence on the board and want to aim more for better flow and style.

Hi! So, I'm an OG skater from WAY back in the day (i'm almost 50) & doe various reasons, mainly i finally live in a place where driving just felt stupid because i live my whole life in a 3 mile radius - AND because some douchecanoe that owed me dough gave me one (derp - lol) I GOT A LONGBOARD. I wqs a streetskate/halfpipe guy & surfed on the weekends through school. Back then I don't even remember longboards being a thing. The whole deck setup - the new trucks & reverse trucks & various bushings & whatnot - It;s a totallly rad scene & I wish I had caught on sooner. I had to buy an electric longboard 2 weeks ago (my fkn car got stolen) & OMFG- I am gonna live the rest of my life on 4 wheels again & it feels so great. BUT - I just wanted to say - Until I saw your video - I had never even SEEN anyone attempt to do any real actual tricks on a longboard. Obv I have sen the dancing thing - which to me - prolly because I'm an old sexist fart - Looks awesome when ladies do it & str8 goofy when doods do... but whatever - I'm old and stupid. Point being - You're fkn awesome. Cheers BTW - The learning to fall bit is huage. I bailed CRay-ZAY HARD my 1st week on the deck. I was going down hill & hadn't made ANY adjustments to the board since I got it & the person who gave it to me is a midget (not for real, but really) - & I got going way too fast & the side of the road got XRAZY sketch AND pinched down hard WHILE traffic got heavy & I STRAIGHT UP ATE IT SUPERMAN -STYLE doing a SOLID 20 mph. THANK GOD I managed to turn to one side right before i hit the tarmac, so my upper arm & shoulder was able to protect my chest & head, BUT - my lef hip took a shot - left knee too - my upper arms & shoulders are tree trunks & even though they took the brunt - didn't even bruise - but the hip & knee left me limpin for days - the whole ordeal wounded me more between my ears than they did physically - BUT it made me realize how stupid I had been to NOT MAKE THE NECESSARY ADJUSTMENTS so the deck fit me personally & how I plan to use it, So... yeah You're still awesome

@mutagenix77622 жыл бұрын
Heyo! Early 30's here and just started longboarding about two years ago. It was intimidating at first. I felt clumsy, off-balance, and very much out of my element. I even pushed mongo for the first two months before course correcting, so I had to learn to skate all over again having not even learned how to skate yet. Just keep plugging away at it and you'll get better. Your enjoyment will increase noticeably. Today it's my favorite way of staying active and I try to skate every day if possible. Summers in CA are perfect so some days I'll spend all day skating at the beach. Very therapeutic. The risk of occasional injury is 100% worth it and I would do it ten times over. Longboarding changed my life when I needed it most. Hope you find this encouraging, happy trails!

Trick with falling is turning the linear momentum into angular momentum - once you lock that into your subconscious your good. Deflect, don't halt, the vector of force and try to make the impact stretch over time and impact more areas spreading the load. Don't stop just slide, roll, tumble - the goofier you look like a kid falling the less likely you take real damage. Falling like a superhero or egoist worried about how some messy tumbling slide looks will get you busted up.

A couple of months ago I came off my street skateboard on a hill, because I panicked and thought I saw a car coming towards me. Twisted both ankles before I was even off the board, and grated my knee up. Moral of the story, always remain calm when skating, it's a good stress reliever, and panicking can lead to injuries or falling

May I ask, I bought a standard-size(75cm) skateboard online to learn how to skate. The wheels of the skateboard I bought were made of bone. The overall weight of the skateboard is too heavy for me to hold it with one arm, and it is quite long also. Are all skateboards like this or should I choose a skateboard that suits my weight and size? If anyone with experience can help me out on this subject, I would be very happy.
