On December 14th 2023, I woke up at 5 AM to listen to the new Pocket Change album before school. I was so tired, but I literally couldn’t wait. I was stunned by the first five tracks and inspired to study each and every note as soon as I got home. The first time I listened to "RIVER" though was unlike anything I had ever experienced. Those textures of the riveted ride at the very beginning immediately gave me impressions of liquidity and fluidity - so smooth. I kept my eyes closed the entire time. When I read the title of the piece, I was at a loss for words. It reminded me of the incredible expressiveness of this beautiful instrument. However, it takes a true master to convey such complex emotions and associations. I found my idol in Nate Smith. Kudos.

Nate Smith: King of pocket. This is great to listen to, as always.

Nate Smith is a rich player : Simple but complex, technical but musical, subtle but elegant. It's not for everybody because you need an experienced hears to appreciate the level of mastering of this series of dry drumming. But I have good hope even beginners like me who have taste for drumming can get dazzled just by the fluidity, the tone, the groove, the ingenuosity.

At first, I thought there was a backing track... but he's working the hat too... this is so musical, sick!

God does Nate's playing, Nate's body is just a vessel for the magic he creates. I only screw around playing drums but when I see him play with only a snare, a tom and bass drum and a few cymbals, you realize it has nothing to do with equipment and everything to do with the player.
