Speaking of knowing multiple languages, my Nigerian friend from church taught a sermon one Sunday and began by asking, “I can speak Nigerian and English, so what does that make me?” The congregation answered, “bilingual”. He then asked, “so what are you called if you can speak 3 languages?” To which the congregation hesitantly answered, “trilingual?” Lastly, he asked, “so what are you called if you can only speak 1 language?” The congregation was silent, to which my Nigerian friend answered, “American”.

Hey, Bear! As a healthcare provider, hearing Nate's description of his "Trail of Tears" heading home from Lexington, I found myself mentally calculating his blood glucose levels and am surprised he didn't go into a one of those diabetic staring episodes that Dusty knows so well. I will say that after hugging Nate at Greg Warren's special (and having my own speechless Fangirl episode) I think he has definitely earned some Blizzards and ice cream with milk. He has lost a lot of weight and has clearly been working hard both on and off the wagon! I also wanted to throw out there that my husband's fantasy football team is called "Hello Folks"! Huge fans up here in WV!!

I was immediately embarrassed because: why on earth would Nic be in Target, in Lubbock, Texas, on a random weekday…? Needless to say, I listen to this podcast too much. Side note: I’d love to see a ~wives~ episode! I’m especially curious to know what Dusty’s wife is like. Love looking forward to listening to y’all each week, thanks for that. :)

So glad I didn't skip through the product endorsements, like I usually do. Hearing Bucephalus, Aaron and Dusty talk about "off" or "on" the wagon. Which then rabbit-trailed into a two minute discussion that had nothing to do with the product. Then Nate showcased his comedic timing with a "I am not even sure if I am a part of this." All part of what makes this podcast so great.

3rd Grade Teacher from Huntsville, AL here! I would love to help clear up Dusty’s COMpass confusion. In English, there are stressed and unstressed syllables in words. In an unstressed syllable, a lot of times we make a “lazy” vowel sound called a “schwa.” It can happen with any vowel. It’s why when you say “away,” you say “uh-way” instead of “A-way.” Tons of multi-syllable words have the “schwa” sound like lemon (lemUHn), president (presUHdent), banana (bUHnanUH), and compass (cUHmpass.) Yes, 3rd graders have to know this… but don’t worry, I didn’t learn about the “schwa” myself until I started teaching 3rd grade reading a few years ago! It was great to see Dusty and Brian at Stand Up Live a few months ago and we already have our tickets to see Nate in December! Let’s Go Folks!

Hi Nate, my name is Kassie Massey and I am a dietitian who specializes in disordered eating. Every week you seem to describe being stuck in what we call the restrict-binge cycle with your eating. You eat “good foods” for a while and then the pendulum swings in the complete opposite direction. You should consider trying to give yourself unconditional permission to eat foods, soon the novelty of your “junk” foods will wear off and you’ll likely crave more nutritious options. For instance, after the day you had McDonald’s, Dairy Queen, candy, etc. you probably didn’t feel well and seemed to enjoy your yogurt and granola the next morning all the more. You probably overdo the junk foods because they seem off-limits. Anyway best of luck!

Nate sometimes jokes about his intellect regarding speaking, reading, and comprehension. But then he talks about how language restrictions pushed people like Stern to be better. I thought that was incredibly insightful. Not many people realize that the lack of restrictions has hurt us more than helped us. Also, I think there need to be more comics who could be G rated as Nate is. The fact that I can suggest his standup acts to literally anyone is rare. Nate, don’t ever lose that! Your success has proven that we, as a culture, crave cleanliness when it comes to comedy. You allow the comedy to be the star.

If you're looking at the words, "PEACE AND LOVE" and you want to correct the tracking (the spaces between each word), it's grammatically correct to say, "the space between 'peace' and 'and' and 'and' and 'love' look off to me". Reminds me of the buffalo thing. I've always loved that one.

Hey bear! I relate to the laughter as the form of expression very well. When I discovered the church I now attend, while doing Bible study with the people who were teaching me, I would laugh in amazement at The Bible's prophecies and fulfillment. Most of them are concentrating so hard on the signs that they look like robots. Anyway, I often think of Nate when this topic comes up in class, simply because I can picture him trying to gesture with others to get his point across and I’m not sure it would look much different than his normal, everyday interactions now. Language was a great topic for this week's Podcast because of it's huge diversification encompassing the Vagaries of our language. ie: In the word scent, is "S" silent-or "C"? Why is there a "D" in fridge, but not in refrigerator? Ever wonder why the word funeral starts with FUN? Why isn't a Fireman called a Water-man? If money doesn't grow on trees, how come Banks have Branches? Why are goods sent by ship called CARGO and those sent by truck SHIPMENT? Why do we put cups in the dishwasher and the dishes in the Cupboard? Why is it called 'Rush Hour" when traffic moves at its slowest pace? And how come Noses run...and Feet smell? UNBELIEVABLE....TO BE CONTINUED.....Loved watching the four of you. Always entertaining and enlightening.

I meant to comment on whatever podcast it was where you mentioned Travis Walton’s alien abduction but I’m a procrastinator so I’m commenting on this one instead. My husband and I met Travis Walton at a MUFON conference in Pennsylvania 10 years ago. I asked him how come they had him found naked in the movie Fire in the Sky, when in his book and in his presentations he said he had clothes on when he was found, and he said something like “That’s Hollywood.” So I asked him which movie or TV show portrayed his story the most accurately. He said the episode on the TV show Paranormal Witness. He said they did it the closest to what really happened (at least as of 2012 when this conversation happened). Anyway, after meeting him and talking to him and looking in his eyes, I believe that something really did happen to that man. p.s. my surname is pronounced like Hind in hindsight.

Why “Go.” is a complete sentence: a sentence is a group of words giving a complete thought and must contain a subject and a verb (although one may be implied). The sentence “Go.” is an imperative sentence, meaning it gives a command. The actual meaning is “You go.” The subject, “you,” is implied, but the thought is complete. Although not technically a complete sentence, Aaron Weber has demonstrated that the following IS a complete thought: “Enough.”

I am a big fan of Nate and was ecstatic to stumble across this podcast. I spent the past 2 months catching up on all the episodes and I was devastated to be caught up - because now I have to wait a week before starting the next one. I catch myself saying "GOOD NIGHT" several times a day and I'm trying to make 'in one fell swoop' the next buzzword/phrase overused in corporate America. I went to your show in Northampton, Mass and the opener was making jokes about Salem. The crowd (being typical New Englanders) were not laughing... and finally someone shouted 'We aren't even close to Salem!'. I died laughing... and was immediately suspicious that it was a set up. However, once I found the podcast I realized that there was NO WAY it was a set up and that the comic truly did not realize. Which made the memory even funnier. I have tickets to your show in Hartford in November and I don't care that its the same material. I have nosebleed seats but will do my best to shout out 'HEY BEAR'. I hope you can hear me. I work for Travelers and was chatting with one of the big wigs about trying to get you on the Travelers Championship Pro Am. He is also a fan of yours - so no promises - but we are going to try and get you a slot. It would be FANTASTIC to have you golf during our Championship. www.travelers.com/about-travelers/travelers-championship Thanks for being hilarious -

Nate I’m so happy for you that you met your goal weight and were able to give yourself a congratulatory cheat week (or 2). A few years ago when I went from 198 to 160 lbs I was struggling about halfway through and what got me the rest of the way was decided to congratulate myself after with a gorge session of whatever I want and got to the point I was watching other people gorge on the foods I loved in KZbin videos. Unfortunately my congratulatory cheat session never ended and I found myself about 3 years later at 208 lbs. this time you were my driving force. You openly struggle with sweets like I do and I kept at it alongside you (slightly delayed because I had to see you doing it first) and as of this morning am back down to 183 lbs (25 down so far) and another 8 to go. I learned a great deal in this episode; 1. Aaron is Michelin grade chef with his word salad! Just big words drenched in simple ideas that is garnished with questions posed as answers. 2. Breadbox is the walking stereotype of the southern christian man untarnished by the secular world. 3. Dust Pan has a child??! 17 months, almost a year and a half, how long has he been on the show? Has this supposed child been referenced before? 4. Reader Mode, what is this reader mode? Had no idea which feels like salt in a wound, finding out on this show, whom go on to say how much they hate reading. 5. Lastly The Dead Language which is technically not dead. Latin, although does not have native speakers but due to an overwhelming presence in European & Western science, medicine, & literature, it will never be classified as a "dead language." I've been watching/listening since the start & witnessing not only the evolution of the show but the bear folk of the show, has been equally entertaining. Keep it up!

loved the episode. we're having a good time, Dusty. but as a former literature & and writing professor, it was rough to watch everybody really struggle through the concept that Latin is the mother language for ALL the romance languages --- like Italian, French, Portuguese, et. al. Weber, at least, seemed to get the gist of things. Board Game somehow actually studied Latin in the 1930's, but didn't seem to realize that pretty much ALL of our language is derived from Latin. i was most intrigued by the "travel time" vignette regarding Weber and Banjo on a road trip trying to "one up" each other with the saddest country songs ever. it brought a tear to my own eye just hearing them reminisce about it. dollar for dollar, though, i think Bobbie Gentry's "Ode to Billy Joe" should have been in contention and on the list, if there was a list. it's maybe the saddest country song ever; and kind of ahead of it's time. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fpK1kpZ_r7-GhtE

I think that’s exactly what I said about Latin.

I have an audiobook suggestion for Nate that will keep his attention. Anything by author Rick Bragg. He is an author from Alabama that writes stories about growing up in the south. I bet the entire Nateland podcast members would enjoy his stories. Please start with Where I Come From. Love the podcast!

Dusty has the greatest airplane etiquette of all time. If you ask everyone you know, no one else will ever say they like the other passengers to see them go to the bathroom. I wish I could fly with him somewhere just to watch everyone else react. Dusty needs an entire routine just about him on planes.

My family loves a snack we call "peanut butter popcorn." It's basically melted peanut butter mixed with Caro syrup, then poured over a bowl of freshly popped popcorn. Mix it up and voila! Since I use microwave popcorn, there's always some un-popped kernels that my kids just know to watch out for. When my son was 10, he had a friend over to watch a movie and asked for peanut butter popcorn as his friend had never had it. Of course I made a big bowl for them to share. A few minutes later, I realized that I should mention to the friend to be careful of the kernels. I went back in the room to discover the rest of my family, including my husband, had joined the boys, everyone enjoying the snack and my son's friend casually spitting the kernels back into the bowl. Everyone was glued to the movie, not noticing. I shuddered a little, but decided to let it ride. If only my son would've invited little 10 year old Aaron, whom I could have trusted to eat the un-popped kernels instead of shooting them back into the bowl like some Skoal dude at Dusty's trailer.

I love that none of you can whistle! My family LOVES to make fun of my terrible whistling skills. This will make it hurt a little less😂

I was teaching a songwriting class at Thompson Station Church this past weekend, and one of the registrants asked where to find her “COM-Pass” group. I almost snort laughed bc I couldn’t believe that she said it exactly like dusty just had (in Nashville) and I’d never heard it said that way either….so I think we could all owe Dusty an apology as it’s made me question all my words now.😅

It's UNBELIEVABLE that you guys did an episode on "language" and didn't use an ad for Babble. Our old pals at Babble must be dumbfounded.

Wow, Billy Bear knows how to pick'em. Just went and listened to "Where You've Been", geeez what a debbie downer. And this is what he listens to for fun on his free time? Apart from that roller coaster of emotion, keep it coming!

I graduated high school in 2000 and took Latin for all 4 years there. My high school still teaches it. Breakfast is right. Latin is the basis for so many languages but also English sentence structure. My husband studied to be a pastor a while and learned Latin, ancient Greek and ancient Hebreww to be able to read the original translations of the Bible.

This is like Inception... a comment about a comment. First, Casey’s (gas station) BREAKFAST pizza is amazing!!!! Second, if you’ve never popped your own popcorn in a big pot on the stove, melted butter in the microwave, and then liberally salted it - you are missing one of the finer things in life. I recommend getting Orville Redenbacher popcorn oil to coat the bottom of the pot. Once you try it, microwave popcorn will be dead to you. It is my family’s regular Sunday night tradition.

To me people cussing on regular tv is another sign of morality and civilization declining. I cuss on a fairly regular basis, but I don’t like hearing it on network television. I remember the days when you only heard cuss words on HBO or Cinemax and I’m only 45 years old.

We live in the suburbs in Florida. My kids' favorite thing to do when their grandpa comes over is taking truck rides. Kiddos in the bed of the truck riding through the neighborhood.

I always wanted to sit in the truck bed growing up. But no one I knew ever had a truck. Then, my dad borrowed a truck from a friend and let me sit in my bed. I was having the time of my life. Only downside was, the truck had a topper on it, with no windows, and the bed was full of tools. So, I was back there, but not sure I had the full experience.

Shout out to Aaron, Casey’s General pizza is an absolute staple in the Midwest. I’m from Iowa and their breakfast pizza is easily my favorite. Two slices and a chocolate milk from Casey’s growing up was perfection!

Dusty, call Wikipedia, your answer actually has 9 of the same words making a complete sentence, as a question “Will Will Will Will Will Will Will Will Will?” Reads as: Asking if one guy with the same First Middle and Last name would be able to will another guy with the same name from the area of Will in the region of Centre, Haiti.

Nate!! I had to pause to comment. I absolutely love chocolate ice cream with milk over it. My aunt showed it to me years ago and it’s been a dessert staple for me. The way the ice cream forms a crust. And then it all blends together. So good. I’ve literally never heard anyone mention it before. Now I can say that Nate does it too 😊

My wife and I were sincerely saddened that Dusty didn't do an ad read this week. Which leads me to an inside baseball question - how do you folks choose who reads which ads each week? Side note, I hope that if you read my comment you'll still be willing to read a much better comment from me in a different video. But this week I was especially curious about the ad reads! Thanks for the laughs as always - y'all are firmly ensconced in Weekly Must Watch status in our household.

Nate, I was diagnosed with ADHD at the age of 40. Your description of how you listen to music and have a hard time getting into a movie’s storyline is exactly the same issue I have. I’d bet dollars to donuts you’ve got ADHD. P.S. I work at the Pentagon and there’s a new ICEE machine in one of the restaurants. If you, Aaron, Dusty or Beatboxin’ Billy are ever in DC, hit me up for a tour of the facility and a Blue Raspberry.
