Hello folks and 👋 🐻 I wanted to share a behind-the-scenes story from this week’s episode that I think y’all would enjoy. At my reptile shows, I usually wear a grey undershirt beneath my Forgotten Friend Reptile Sanctuary uniform. When I did Nate’s birthday surprise on Saturday afternoon, I was actually coming from another reptile show that morning. When I got to his AirBnB, I felt like I should change out of my grey undershirt and put on a Nateland t-shirt. The shirt wasn’t going to be visible under my uniform anyway, but it still felt necessary. As I changed shirts in the driveway by the side of the van, a voice in my head kept going OLIVIA??? Fast forward to the moment I’m about to get in the pool with the guys. At this point we had already filmed the Gila Monster PSA and my mind was fully blown. Everyone is having an amazing time but I’m having THE MOST FUN out of anyone. I’m taking my shoes and socks off and planning to jump in with just uniform pants and a t-shirt, not really thinking about what t-shirt I have on. As I pull off my uniform shirt, Nate’s huge eyes get even bigger as he notices something… He gets a big smile across his face and says “you gotta Nateland shirt!” It’s the custom Mt Rushmore shirt that Kerr Smith designed for me last year. It’s a design Kerr wouldn’t let me pay him for because he loves Nateland so much. When I had put the shirt on an hour earlier, I didn’t think anyone would even know I was wearing it. And now it’s bringing a huge smile to Nate’s face. Thanks again to Kerr, a Nateland friend I’ve never met in real life, for creating it!! So maybe an hour later we are all having the time of our life. I mean we are just having a ball. Just so much fun hanging out and loving animals. Out of nowhere Nate says to me “say hi to Laura” and he shows me his phone and they’re FaceTiming. I say hello and he says “she’s wearing her Hello Folks shirt” and sure enough she is wearing that cool colorful shirt that Jacy Lee Pulford designed! Jacy is another one of my awesome Nateland friends who I still haven’t met in real life I couldn’t help but feel like Nate and his family are just as big of Nateland fans as we are. That Nate gets so much joy in all the custom stuff folks create for them. That every time he says “none of this is lost on me” he means it with all his heart. They are just THE BEST. When Nate talks about the reptile experience in today’s episode you’ll see he’s almost struggling for words to describe how fun it was. And that’s the Nateland experience in a nutshell. Its just too much fun to describe, until you experience it. And I’m glad all of us are part of the experience!!

My wife and I saw Nate tonight in Greenville, South Carolina. We were so excited to see Nate because he is our favorite comedian, but little did we know that Nate’s dad was going to be the star of the show. His magic set was engaging and hysterical. I know where Nate gets it from! In all seriousness, Nate’s new hour was so well written and relatable. We are going to try to see Aaron, Dusty, and Butter Boy next time they are down in South Carolina. Thanks for bringing so much laughter to our lives. We love ya’ll!

I often talk back to you guys like I’m there! We’re a homeschooling family so whenever we listen in the car, I count it towards school hours. Nateland is a lot like my homeschool: We sit around a table, goofing off and learning a little too! Brian, good luck on the mound at the sounds game. I've been on that mound for a first pitch as well. A local Christian radio station whose mascot is a fish hired me for a Murfreesboro parade years back. Being from a small town in Arkansas I assumed the parade was less than a mile long. I gave it my all from the very start, jumping up and down, waving at kids, dancing, high-fiving the public, all while wearing boots and jeans underneath this hot and very old fish costume. The parade went for miles. Sweat was burning my eyes closed, I wasn't hydrated at all, I couldn't get air in my lungs- It's the closest I've ever come to blacking out. I pushed through. Some time later the radio station called me back as the fish again for a sounds game. Audio adrenaline was playing there and I got to run around the concert getting the crowd hyped as well as be on the mound while the first pitch was thrown. This time I drank water, gatorades, wore shorts/t-shirt, tennis shoes, and a sweatband. I was on my game. Standing on that mound, hydrated and alive, is where I felt like I became a legit mascot. That was my last time dressing up as one, however in years since, I've coincidentally been asked if I ever listen to 94 fm the fish. I tell them- I am the fish. p.s. It took my brain a good minute and a couple weird mom looks to reset and stop automatically waving at kids with mascot excitment after taking the costume off...Doesn't translate.

For the record, reptiles include snakes, lizards, turtles, and crocodilians. Amphibians include frogs, toads, and salamanders. Reptiles are generally dry and scaly, while amphibians tend to be wet and slimy. Reptiles and amphibians are both cold-blooded, but are separate families. However, herpetology is the study of reptiles AND amphibians, so they are often grouped together even though they are two different families. Nature is full of exceptions but those are the main categories. Many science nerds argue that BIRDS are closer to reptiles than amphibians, because scale structure and feather structure are nearly identical. Plus reptile eggs are more like bird eggs than amphibian eggs. But unlike reptiles and amphibians, birds are warm blooded. Also about half of snakes and lizards have live birth, more like mammals, instead of eggs like birds. Nature is the worst. It’s full of predictable patterns and tons of surprises. Nature is the best.

My family and I always called it a ‘clicker’ or ‘changer’. It feels like I’m trying to be all uppity if I call it a remote. It made me so happy to hear Nate call it a clicker. Growing up we had this nice sound system box on our tv cabinet that played cds and radio plus the surround sound. The power button got busted and we couldn’t use it anymore. Finally after maybe a year my parents went to BestBuy to buy a new one and while talking with the salesman told him the power button on the current unit was broke. He looks at them and says ‘couldn’t you just use the remote?’ My parents looked at eachother flabbergasted! None of us had ever thought of that 😂😂

At the end of the semester I finally asked what he was listening to and that’s how I became a Nateland fan. I’m only on episode #17 so I feel like I’m Brendan Fraser in Blast from the past coming out of his bunker after 30 yrs out of touch with what’s happening. Like, you’re on #148! Is Buckwheat still being called by other names? Is Aaron still the smarter one? Can Nate pronounce words any better after several years? Those who are old enough to remember the 70s will remember cars with vinyl roofs. While driving through Six Flags Great Aventure Safari in NJ, the baboons would frequently jump on cars, press up against the windows, and destroy the vinyl rooftops and antennas. When I visited with my family as a child, we passed a car of people who were completely unaware that a group of baboons were sitting on top of their car until we honked and pointed at them while passing by! Despite the posted signs discouraging visitors from rolling down windows and driving vinyl topped vehicles in the park, many people just ignored them. Either that, or the baboons managed to destroy the signs too. -SGS

The reason they don't make movies like that anymore is that Studios could take more risks on smaller budgets because of the lack of DVD sales. Movies were allowed to slowly grow even after being released in theaters so movie could make its money back many years after its release. With streaming agreements they don't see that backend money. Now, studios only see want to make movies that they see as 100% money makers in theaters and don't take risks.

I think Dusty’s “BAH-BOON” is the new “YEE YEE!” Also, fun fact! I’m from Phoenix AZ and a common fear is being stung by a baby scorpion because they can’t control the amount of venom they inject. An adult scorpion, similar in this hypothetical colosseum fight, would be an adult who can control the amount of venom it injects, making it a strong competitor to the tarantula.

Dang! I had no idea Dusty was in Conway at Toad Suck. What the heck! I went to high school there and live an hour from there. Never been bummed about missing Toad Suck until just now. But I did see MC Hammer there in 2014 so not completely devastated.

I'm surprised at Aaron's insistence that the elephant would not be aggressive. In ancient times, elephants were in used war. They would sometimes put armor on the elephants, get them drunk, and then have them charge into tightly packed enemy soldiers. It's like an ancient game of blood bowling. The elephant rider would have to carry a hammer and spike in the case the elephant ran at the wrong soldiers. This is most famously seen by Hannibal attacking the Romans, but also by the Seleucid Greeks in the Book of 1 Maccabees (6 verse 43 and following). 1 and 2 Maccabees would definitely be in Aaron's Bible, and definitely not in Brian's and Nate's Bible. However for Dusty, it was included in the 1611 printing of the KJV, but not the current editions so I'm not sure if Dusty recognizes it or not. I'm not aware of any rhinos being used in battle historically. I'll go proofread this now.

Just watched a USPS driver pull up to the house and I immediately stop the work I’m doing to watch. I begin watching this truck and driver with intense curiosity hoping to see if she was going to do the smart thing and make a 3-point turn or just go full steam ahead into our mountain of a yard to keep from backing up. She proceeds to weigh her options intensely and then concedes to putting her truck in reverse with a grimace and makes the 3-point turn. You could tell it hurt her to the core to do it but she made the sacrifice shaking her head in disgust of herself. I now respect the USPS drivers more somehow.

An amazing idea for a movie would be this Animal Colosseum tournament. No personal story line, nothing like that. Just a movie that basically films like a UFC night but cuts to the audience and concession stands showing all the hilarious moments this podcast describes. The animal fights would be realistic and awesome. Like a nature doc, but putting animals in the context of a stadium. No need to even come up with ideas, every fights and audience interaction has already been described by Nateland.

As a person from Maine who has experienced both Moose and Black Bears, (Aaron- Moose and black bears both live in Maine) a moose would stomp a black bear to death. People in Maine don’t worry about black bears, but we do worry about moose.

I worked in a pet shop in HS. We would put tarantulas and scorpions in the same tank and wager bets on who would win. The tarantula almost always won. We put Piranhas in the tank with Red Devils, Oscars… 1 on 1 Piranha’s often lost. They are nothing without a pack

For an episode labeled comments and catching up, not a whole lot of comments or catching up. Very Nateland of you guys to do that. Love the podcast. Dusty should totally do his own podcast too

Hello Folks! Listening to Dusty’s story about raising frogs, only one of forty survived. Translation, I killed 39 frogs. This is the same guy who was invited to the Toad Suck Festival. Imagine if that festival was a sting operation to catch the infamous baby frog killer…

Hello Folks!! Nate mispronounces Mackinac, but of course he's heard Mackinaw before!! Broadcast Bates missed an opportunity to mention the "Mack-In-Aww Peaches" episode of Seinfeld, which is probably where he heard it. On that note, why is the Peach spelled Mackinaw even though its from Mackinac... Make up your mind Michigan! Anyways, thanks for the laughs every week and for keeping it clean. I never miss an episode!
