Doug has been my favorite comedian for over a decade. I've seen his special "deadbeat hero" more than any other stand-up special. It's crude, crass, risque, and hilarious. I always feel like, "I hope no one can hear what I'm watching" as I'm laughing my ass off. And he's the reason I decided to become an alcoholic. 😉

I’m 27, been watching Doug since I was 19. I was blown away hearing a comedian who had the same dark sense of humor that I did and saying it on stage was even crazier. Makes me wish I grew up in the 90s to see guys like him live and in their prime.

Bro that’s the same way I felt when I first watched him. I was shocked at how dark he was but how much he still made me laugh. His bit about beheadings from No Place Like Home KILLS me. I've been a Doug Stanhope fan ever since I first heard him on The Aristocrats somewhere around 2006. He's dark, and twisted, he never holds back, and he's always on point and hilarious. I saw him live about a year ago. He had this 8 minute bit I call "Are incestuous pedophiles playing the long game when they get their wives pregnant?" It had me questioning whether I was a decent person or not for laughing that hard at this subject matter. Never stop Doug.

Great video. Doug is, and has been in my top 5 fav comedians of all time. Along with Mitch Hedberg. Yes there are three more, but I named Mitch because maybe you could do a video on him. I mean, he was a little before his time, and he's gone way to soon, but he was dark, he had stage fright, obviously he had a drug problem, but most importantly, Mitch was effing hilarious. Thank you for making these videos. I know first hand how much time and work goes into a video. You are appreciated. Much Love and Aloha from Honolulu Hawaii. 🤙

Many years ago I heard Ricki Gervais mention Doug Standhope, as a working comedian he really liked. I was a fan of Gervais, and started to dig a little. Stanhope blew me away. Saw him i Copenhagen in around 2014, and it was crazy. All the top danish comedians was there as well. Love Doug! He's like an angel in hell, that takes the most horrible things you can think of, all you fears and whatever makes you uncomfortable, grabs it and shakes it until a bunch of jokes fall out, and suddenly it doesn't have the same power over you.
@Garblegox
@Garblegox 5 ай бұрын
I like that you mentioned the big heart he got from his mom. When he talks about misfits and freaks, he does so with the greatest sense of sympathy, and an appreciation for the variety they add to the world. As sick of humans as he sounds, he's a sweet and welcoming dude. 24:16 I think this is a bit of what people are now calling "nihilistic optimism". He grants that life is suffering, everything is absurd, and nothing is _that_ big of a deal, but he insists that there's still fun to be had, and that everything is still remarkably okay. He drags you through a thorn bush of harsh truths, and then finds some way to make you laugh about the experience. I think Stanhope gets misunderstood as a guy whose whole shtick is being as dark and cynical as possible. But it's always just the set up. The punchlines are hilarious silver linings that have on multiple occasions brought me to tears, not just from laughing.

I dig a lot of what you're doing on this channel, Ser. Just having a healthy and intelligent understanding of the complexities that define brilliant comedy already has you ahead of the pack. Sadly, the majority of comedy criticism and commentary on KZbin is so impressively inept, fundamentally flawed, stunningly stupid, and misses the mark by so many light years that I am torn between feeling pity for their belief they are the presiding arbiters of universal comedy standards and wishing they would all just shut the fuck up if they insist on being wrong OUT LOUD.

Onstage, when Stanhope is on an inspired fiery streak he could become equal parts Bukowski, Carlin and Nietzsche. Deadbeat Hero and No Refunds are priceless hardcore examples of Douglas' impassioned genius that hold up incredibly well. I would also throw Before Turning The Gun On Himself, Beer Hall Putsch and No Place Like Home into the "Essential Stanhope" list as well. Thanks wholeheartedly for this, Nate. Because if so, what the hell is it that you're doing here? How can you be the Comedy Historian, if you don't first spend the time, learning the history? @TheComedyHistorian awesome documentary. As always, the sneaky norm nods are appreciated. I have one point of disagreement with you and that's on your list of comedy influences. You list Mitch hedburg as an influence and I'm not entirely sure that's accurate. Idk if Doug's said he's one so if he has I apologize I am wrong but, Doug was touring with Mitch. In fact the set you have clips from where Doug has the Santa hat (only video but I didn't see you play anything off that set other than video of him) he does that with Mitch. I would say Mitch is a contemporary of his and maybe they influenced one another by being around each other and learning in that way but I don't think he influenced Doug's style necessarily. Other than that loved it man. I'm subscribed and I spread the word about you and jokeworld all the time!
@TheComedyHistorian
@TheComedyHistorian 2 ай бұрын
I’m sure you’re correct, I thought he might’ve influenced him a bit based on him doing a Mitch Hedberg joke at the show I saw of him that was live but that might’ve been foolish to assume looking back. Contemporary is probably a better word for what Mitch was to Doug. I appreciate you digging the content though man plenty more where that came from! And thanks for spreading the word about me and Joke WRLD ❤️

Great stuff, brother. I've been a big Stanhope fan since I purchased a DVD copy of _Deadbeat Hero_ from Best Buy way back in late 2004/early 2005. He's a clearly intelligent man with a unique voice. It's funny you mentioned how Carlin, near the end of his life, wasn't really telling jokes, so much as ranting about how messed up life is. That's Doug in a nutshell. Also, being a "conspiracy theorist," I'm quite familiar with the "Austin incident." 😁👍
@TheComedyHistorian
@TheComedyHistorian 6 ай бұрын
Yeah man, Doug still finds ways to tell Jokes but towards the end of Carlin’s career it got harder and harder to listen to. @@TheComedyHistorian Old Carlin reminded a bit of young Alex Jones, in that he basically ranted about how screwed up the world was. Personally, I found it quite amusing and informative. Stanhope is one of the most underrated comedians still alive and kicking. His no place like home special has moments of true genius regarding the mentally ill/ handicapped problem. I also use two of his jokes when meeting new people and trying to break the ice. "I just blew a speaker In my car....yea he was a motivational speaker, left a Bad taste in my mouth but I feel alot more positive! And his kitty porn joke is shockingly good. I added some of my own elements when I tell it, I always make it sound like a real dire situation and I need help cause I found my brother was hiding kitty porn in his room. I say i think it was Asian cause the performers were Siamese. It was barely legal Asian kitty porn, and cap it off with a remark like "yea I made my brother promise to have a stern talking to with the cat." I just love the looks people get when I first start telling them!

To those who skipped because he compared Doug to Peterson. Yes, I almost skipped it as well. Its absurd and ridiculous. But dont let that absurd comment stop you from learning about Stanhope. Stanhope will go down as top 5 to ever do it. And needs to be acknowledged as such. "Sodomy is eco-friendly and abortion is green." Its perfect. And hes explained this. Hes not attacking the people you think. Sure, it could be read into many ways. Thats what makes it good. It can be read into from many angles. But according to him it was moreso pointed at the right and those who try to legislate what a woman does and those who have multiple kids despite being poor and some people being okay with it just because they are American. Its a thing I've noticed, and so has he. A lot of people fail to actually think about what he says. Only looking at things from the surface level and taking the wrong things. I see if happen with his bit 60 Inches of Aids. Theres a large number of people who fail to understand the premise of the bit. And whats more funny is those who think Doug likes Alex Jones. I see it in random comments all the times despite Doug being unabashed about calling him a looser of the highest degree. And hes changed his opinion on acting. Hes brilliant in Road Dog.

You are leading exactly the life you are supposed to be living in order to enrich your soul and to learn about yourself. God bless

I'm from the UK, where Doug rarely ventures because he hates it here. But over the years I've dragged my arse around the country 3 times to see him live. And I'm a lazy twat - I wouldn't do that for any other comedian.

I didn't really have a high opinion of Doug Stanhope or Joe Rogan because my first (and for the longest time only) impression of them came from them hosting the short-lived and terrible New Man Show. But that really wasn't fair. That show would have likely been bad no matter who hosted it.

To equate Austin Incident-era Alex Jones to Fox News is ignorant and completely inaccurate. Before he was all-in on cheerleading for Trump he was absolutely not anything Fox News would ever touch or agree with. He was talking abt the holes in the official narrative of that thing that happened in 2001 and criticizing George W. Bush when Fox News was carrying water for both. Other than that flippant comment, this was a great video.

For clarification, Stanhope hates Trump. I have no clue how Jones feels and if I had to wager a guess I'd say he hates him too.
