"Thank you" I learned a lot by watching this video. I have a 7 month old stubborn Aussie and man is she out of control at times. I have taught her the basics, but when she is in a mood and only wants to do what she wants to do.....she makes me CRAZY😤😣 and I want to give up! I don't and I won't thanks to your video's. Your doing a wonderful thing for us dog lovers and for our fur babies! Keep up the good work. I will be watching and taking notes.🐕🐾🤗

I think you explain things so well. I also love that you give many ways to achieve the desired results. So many people think if they try something that was suggested and it didn't work, well that person doesn't know what they're talking about. So many people are not aware that every dog is different and one method does not work for every dog. I just recently found your channel and am so happy I did. Thank you for all that you do

So much great advice in all your QA. This one is no different. Thank you for taking the time to do this, Nate. I am going to try the metal food bowl over the crate when visitors come. Uke is working great to get my pup fully down and to stop barking when he gets excited seeing a dog walk by the house. I give him the place command, platz and if still barking, the down which makes him stop barking. Working on proofing that and getting him to do it faster and get over the excitement.

@@NateSchoemer Not at all. Just a girl with a GSD pup I got at 5 months wanting him to be the best companion dog he can be with some serious manners. I am a first-time dog owner with a GSD (I have always wanted my whole life). I just happened to have a reactive hypervigilant now 11 month pup and have set out to do everything I can to make him into the well-mannered, confident, steadfast GSD I've always wanted. He's 90% perfect to me. Working on the 10% where he is accepting of people in my house and doesn't crazy bark when dogs walk by the house and I'd like him to be more easy going around friends and family. In fact I was going to ask you if I could pay you for your time for a virtual consult?

Thanks for all your very high quality contents Nate! I've been wondering about this : When, or can you change your reward to some verbal commend instead of a treat or a toy? So commands can be used anytime, and dogs will not be disappointed to not receive a marker then a treat but a "good boy"? Because I want to use commands outside of training time, and make them a normal thing in everyday life. For example when some strangers walk by, I want to say "heel" and see my dog do that. I won't be able to have toys or treats with me all the time, especially when outside, but I still want my dog to listen to the commands.

Just found your channel the other day and you have completely changed they way I have always viewed dog training. Your content is amazing. One of the things I haven't seen you cover or maybe I missed it is what is the best way to train a puppy to not fear bath time?
@NateSchoemer
@NateSchoemer 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I make the bathtub a pleasant place for the pup before they ever get a bath. Meaning, I will take the pup to the bath tub and treat it as a command. Once the dog is in the bathtub, I mark and reward. Then I release the pup without ever turning on the water. I continue to do that for a little while, maybe a week or so. Then I'll have the pup in the bathtub and I'll turn the water on a low setting, but I won't get the pup wet. I want to get them comfortable with the sound and look of the water being on. Next, I'll get the pup a little wet and I'll mark and reward. As the pup becomes more and more comfortable with the bath, then I'll actually give the dog a bath. This takes some time, but it prevents having bathing issues as the dog gets older. I hope that help. :)

What constitutes a physical correction and a non-physical correction? With our rottweiler the only physical corrections we used was when he would chew on something dangerous (tin can that was split open and had risk of cuts) and for others like barking we would clamp and stomp to correct him from barking. For other obedience and behavioral training we have always just used. a clicker to show we like something being sustained or performed.
@NateSchoemer
@NateSchoemer 4 жыл бұрын
A physical correction would be something like a leash pop with a training collar. Understanding Operant Conditioning: Operant conditioning is a form of learning that teaches the subject desired behaviors through consequences and rewards. This is a psychological foundation that dog trainers use as the underlying framework for all techniques. There are four important quadrants to operant conditioning, and those four are positive- reinforcement, negative-reinforcement, positive-punishment and negative-punishment. Using operant conditioning style training with your dog will teach him or her that their behavior has an effect on their environment. Meaning the dog believes that it is their action that can make rewards or corrections happen to them. Before we move forward, I would like to explain how to remember the four quadrants that we learned earlier and go further into what they mean. The first thing to keep in mind is that the term “positive” means to add to the equation, so positive-reinforcement means we are adding a physical reward like a treat, toy or petting. On the contrast, negative means we are taking away. So negative- punishment means you are removing the reward; such as not giving the dog a treat until the dog does the behavior correctly. Positive- punishment means to add a physical correction. Negative reinforcement means to turn pressure on and only remove the pressure once the desired result or behavior is reached. We will start with the easiest of the four to understand, and that's positive-reinforcement. This is what most people use with their dogs. The owner will give the dog some form of a physical reward when the dog performs the desired behavior, so for example, when the dog sits-the owner will give the dog a treat for sitting, teaching the dog that sitting is a good thing. An easy way to look at it is that we use positive reinforcement for any behavior we would like the dog to repeat by giving them a reward for that action. The next one that most people use and understand is negative punishment. As I mentioned before, all “negative-punishment” means in dog training is withholding a reward. This should be delivered when the dog makes a mistake or isn't performing the correct behavior, and as a result, the human will not give the dog the treat until the dog shows the desired behavior. For example, you're teaching your dog a sit, and the dog keeps trying to jump up to get the treat out of your hand, so you withhold the reward from the dog. However, the second the dog sits, you immediately pay the dog, and the dog then realizes that all he had to do for the treat was to sit. The next is positive-punishment which is a process of giving the dog a physical correction with a training collar to stop undesirable behavioral traits. If I have a dog, and that dog’s favorite thing in the world is to chase cars, the only way I can stop that dog from performing the behavior is by correcting it out of the dog’s repertoire. Remember everything is based on motivation. Whatever the dog is most motivated to do, that's what the dog will do. So to not chase the car, the dog must be more motivated not to receive a correction than the dog is to chase the vehicle. Last is negative reinforcement. We use this in dog training by implementing a technique called leash pressure work. Every dog has what's called "classical opposition reflex.” Meaning, when you pull one direction on the leash, the dog pulls the opposite. In this exercise, we teach the dog to go with the pressure on the leash by using negative reinforcement. So by not turning off the pressure until the dog complies teaches the dog always to go with the pressure of the leash, and we can then use this to teach desired behaviors and develop reliability and obedience. By understanding and utilizing operant condition with your dog, you can train your dog to become that well-behaved companion you’ve always wanted.

this is great! thanks! what kind of physical correction would you use for a puppy for biting wood furniture? i don't really know if i'm supposed to flick his nose (like people suggest), bop his nose (also suggested), or just push him away from it. i have tried redirection and it hasn't worked. even if the alternative is one of this favorites. because at that particular time, he sees more enjoyment in the wood furniture than his favorite treat. tried bopping the nose or flicking his snout but he sees is as play. by the way, leash pressure isn't as easy to do on a 70lb puppy, plus he also sees it as play. he sees most everything as play...

So I just found your channel today and I can't stop watching. We've had our puppy for six weeks (she is 16wks old) and we have taught her Ok as her release word. She does great with that command. But if I'm trying to teach her that words matter, and Ok is casually used around the house, I can see that being confusing. Should I start re-training her a new terminal command like Free instead?

I have a follow up to the question about retrieval training- it's has been going really well for us- I dropped a sock out of the laundry basket last week and asked Loki to pick it up and follow me into the laundry room... The problem was, I didn't have a treat go give him for picking it up, and I taught him, per the video, not to let go unless I say Free... How do we transition from his needing a treat each time he picks something up, to just handing it to me?

So sorry that I missed this, and here I have a question. So, my GSD (Barrett) has gotten really good about only playing with and or chewing on his toys and only his toys. The problem I am running into is just how destructive a 6 month old German Shepherd can be when they chew on their toys. And good toys ain't cheap. I don't think he is teething and I don't see anything wrong with his teeth. When I see it, I say one no, and take the toy away, but I don't want him to start thinking that he can't play with his toys. We already had a blockage scare. I am sure this is fixable, I just don't know how.

That technique does work with most dogs, but if it doesn't work right away, then start with your hand closer to the ground and if that doesn't work, then try holding the hand higher up. Usually, by changing the position of the hand, it will entice the dog to paw at it. Once your dog paws at the hand, then mark and reward. I hope this helps!

I want to start teaching him more complex tricks I’ve watched you do, that require more attention. Hi Nate, thanks for your awesome videos, which I've been using to train our new 3 month old Boerboel, and he's a quick learner so he's doing most of things I'm teaching him already, daily. However, we also have 3 other different dogs, and he's starting to get a bit jealous and starting to bite them. I'm a bit concerned about this, as the two small females are small, and very passive. He particularly has started bullying, biting her neck, pushing her over cos he's already bigger than her. The other older small female, Pekingese/ Jack Russell, is 9 years old, but she puts him in his place by growling at him, lol. However, how do I stop him from bullying the smaller females, cos he is growing so fast and already quite dominant with them. He gets along extremely well and plays with our other 1 year old male, but, again, I'm a bit concerned that the Boerbul pup might become aggressive and attack him too. The oldest male, a German Shepherd/ cross, is also passive, and tolerates the new puppy. Please can you advise me how to stop the puppy's jealousy with the other passive dogs. Thanks. Love your videos.

Yes, With a puppy, I will often start with a high-quality dry food during the training process. I also usually give the puppy raw goat milk from answers, to help ensure the dog is getting enough quality nutrition. If I don't have enough time for a training session, then I soak the kibble in water and stuff it into a kong or raw bone. In addition, I train with freeze-dried dog food, but that can be very pricey. amzn.to/2W88zMf Usually, a high-quality kibble will be okay. I transition them to raw when all the main training is completed. My dogs are currently on frozen raw instinct. hope this helps! Cheers!

You said, "A behavioural issue is when a dog is not listening to us". I think you should have added, or when they are not being taught the command properly. Some people may continue to blame the dog/puppy for something that isn't the puppies fault, instead of realising that it they are not teaching the command in a clear and concise way.

Thanks! A behavioral issue is when the dog is doing an undesired behavior such as digging or getting into the trash. An obedience issue is when the dog won't listen to a command, such as sit. Yes, it's important that the dog knows the command you are asking them to perform.

Hello Nate: I take my GSD (9 month old male) for 45 to 60 minute walks every day. My question involves how the dog should be walked. We live in a very active area with golfers, cyclists, runners, skaters & traffic. He is extremely distracted during these walks & I have a really hard time getting him to pay attention to my commands. I have noticed that if he gets away with not paying attention he becomes even harder to control. It frustrates me & I hate to have to correct him all the time we're out there instead of enjoying ourselves. I feel his walks are important for fitness & to get away from the house but it appears that they are counterproductive in other ways. Should I stop walking him outdoors until his training is more advanced?

You can. You can also let him wear a harness and pull. I often use harness to let dogs pull. It's great for exercise and confidence building. :)

You can prepare a raw meal for your dogs by buying all the ingredients or you can buy a pre-made raw dog food from a dog food company. Here's a list of raw dog food companies: www.dogfoodadvisor.com/best-dog-foods/raw-dog-food/

I have a litter of 6 puppies that are almost 4 weeks old. I understand that some growling is normal but one in particular seems to be overly aggressive. There has been three incidents that I felt I needed to step in and remove him from attacking another puppy. A fourth incident his mother jumped in and knocked him off a puppy he was "attacking" with her muzzle. I say attacking because that's what it looks like and sounds like. He's growling and very vocal while biting the other puppy and trying to get on top of the puppy. Some of the puppies cry while one wasn't having it and tried to fight back. This is very alarming to me because I want to make sure all my puppies are well socialized, balanced and are able to have good forever homes. Any advice?

If you want to train without food at all, then you'll need to use pressure based training. You can learn more about that in these two videos: kzbin.info/www/bejne/b32bpX5torh3Z5I kzbin.info/www/bejne/e4PQe6GJrKyGarM

For dogs that are less motivated, this is my process; I bring the dog out for training in the morning (using his dog food). If he's not interested, I say great we'll try again at dinner time. When dinner time rolls around I'll again start training the dog. If the dog quickly loses interest, no big deal, we'll try again at breakfast the next day. I'll continue to do this till I get the motivation and attention that the training requires from the dog. You mustn't feed him anything between the training. He must know that he will only get the food if he works for it. This has worked for me on every (lower motivation) dog that I have trained. I hope this helps and thanks again for supporting the channel.

thank you nate! many people do not accept leash correction, no collar correction because they say you hit the dog and cause him pain, he only trains them with food, what do you think about that?the collar for correction in all dogs is placed behind the ear and under the jaw or below the neck

Claudiu Dulanyi Hi, my name is Ana. My experience is if you get 10 trainers together you’re going to get 10 variations and perspectives that never completely agree. Personally I find I am gaining from a smorgasbord of trainers, sometimes with radically different points of view. Currently I say, if I can accomplished my target behavior in the most gentle manner possible then I go for it. If my goal cannot be accomplished with zero corrections then I have to decide what’s most important to me, zero corrections or reaching the goal. Also to be considered is my dogs comprehension and frustration. If corrections and NO clears up gray areas and confusion for my dog then I am improving our relationship overall by using them. Also to be considered is how many months are you willing to devote and are you willing to embrace training approaches that may shave weeks off of those months? Are you training a household pet? Are you training a police dog? Are you training a competition dog? Are you training a service animal? Relationship, relationship, relationship. At the end of the day you and this four-legged being will be spending lots and lots of time together. What do you want your relationship to look like down the road? What do you want your relationship to feel like during the journey?

Everything our dogs do is based on motivation. They are either motivated to access something pleasant or motivated to prevent something unpleasant. Whichever factor is the most motivating will determine the dog's behavior. Remote collars and pinch collars are forms of positive punishment. Leash pressure work would be considered negative reinforcement. E-collars, also known as shock collars. When these collars are used correctly, they are perfectly safe. However, ethical considerations arise when used by inexperienced, negligent, or careless trainers. This goes with pinch collars as well. If you feel you need to use them, contact a local professional to help you teach it to your dog the correct way. You can also learn more about it in my audiobook: kzbin.info/www/bejne/e4PQe6GJrKyGarM I hope this helps and thanks for the question. :) or check out this excellent course on remote collar training: university.leerburg.com/Catalog/viewCourse/cid/100
