If you intend to do tracking, you should dedicate some training sessions to “nose work.” Just throw treats in the tall grass and tell them to find it. This forces the dog or puppy to rely on their nose first and helps build confidence in using their nose. A lot of times a dog is just not confident with their nose because it tends to be over looked in training and so they by default rely on their eyes without thinking about their nose. Maybe this was already done but this works well with hunting dogs and really accelerates the rate at which they pick up tracking and general search training

Also helps them to keep from wind searches or winding -

Last week I tried for the first time to train my 15 month Cane Corso to search. I am simply amazed at how quick he caught on. The first attempt at finding the scented nylon I hid outside in windy conditions, he was immediatley successful and understood his task and lead directly to the Nylon(about 30meters away). Today we tried for the first time human scent following. My dad walked ahead about 750meters in a trail network in the local forest. He zig zagged and then found a place to hide in bushes well off the trail.. My dog found him everytime we did this with no issue at all, not once losing his track. I let me dog free roam the forest about 2-4 hours a day and he naturally enjoys tracking scents which I think has led to him picking it up so quickly.

My Mal ALWAYS has his nose to the ground! It's like he's been trying to tell be from day 1 that he would much rather do SaR, over being a service dog. And I'm okay with that. It's why I'm starting to train him on my own! So far we've hid sticks, my hat, a random mask I found in the house, and he's pretty good at finding them. Now I just need to work with someone else so I (or they) can hide things actually out of sight.

Funny. I didn't realize this was actually a step toward search and rescue. With all the dogs I have had since I was a kid, I would play hide and seek. With my last dog, my daughter would run off and hide in the woods. I would release my dog and often book off in the opposite direction booking through the woods like an escaped felon. She had to use her nose. She always found me and she always found my daughter. Once I was hiding under a pedestrian bridge crouched in swamp water and she raced over the bridge, stopped about 5 feet past me, doubled back to the bridge abutement and found me under the bridge. For me it has always been just really fun game to play with my dog.

Hi Nate! I watched many of your instruction videos in preparation to adopt a young working line Shepherd. They prepared me very well for the amount of exercise, training, play, and mental stimulation he needs. He is positively blossoming into the best dog I've ever owned, out of 10! I wanted to thank you on his behalf and mine for the quality of and ease to put your suggestions into practice.

I remember YEARS ago watching a demo if search and rescue training. A Germany Shepherd went ahead of the handler and found the volunteer victim in a dry well, covers with boards and rubble. The dog didn't even wait for the handler but started picking the boards and junk up, throwing to the side to find the person..... Who needs handler's!

Hi Nate😊 It would be great if you could answer my question. What is the right tool for aggressively reactive dog? Many trainers recommend prong collar, but it makes my dog more aggressive. The same thing with slip lead or Martingale collar, it chocks my dog and he gets crazy. And I feel awful, because I don’t help my dog, but only do his reactivity worse. When I use front clip harness he is more calm, but I can’t correct him with harness. And he walks awkwardly with front clip harness.. Your fans Mariia and dog Max🐾

How often was the dog wearing slip lead or Martingale collar?
@mariaivanova4913 жыл бұрын
@@elizabethwilson1928 well, firstly we desensitized him at home and then with low destructions to slip lead and to martingale. He wears it since a year or so. He can walk with it pretty good, until big destructions, that we often cannot avoid (stray dogs).
@elizabethwilson19283 жыл бұрын
@@mariaivanova491 Good.Next desensitize him to a muzzle and other dogs. Try walking around an edge of a dog park or somewhere dogs frequent with a muzzle on,only giving praise and treats when he being a good boy.Also depending on the dogs makeup and background,he may never warm up to other dogs be prepared for that possibly, some animals are just meant one animal households.

Hey, My 18 week old German Shepherd she always wakes up very early and it’s unbearable, is there anyway to get her sleep in, will she just grow out of waking us up. Is there a way for her to wait for us to get up then she gets excited to be up?

Very long shot at getting a response, but I recently got my first Mal, he was 7 weeks when I got him he’s now 11 weeks old. Potty training is a nightmare. He goes out every 20-30 minutes during the day and every 3 hours at night. Any tips you can give me to help with this? And he is doing great in commands but only during feeding time he doesn’t care to pay attention to me any other time.
@@NateSchoemer do you by chance do virtual private sessions? Out of all of KZbin you are by far my favorite trainer and I go to all of your videos for any advice. Would love to pay for a few sessions so that I can train my puppy the best way possible?

My pup is only 8 weeks. Is it too early for him?
@cheyennemiller5107 ай бұрын
Do positive treat training. Just throw treats on the grass close to him and tell him to find. Don’t make it too hard and make sure you don’t point it out, he has to find it but don’t make it too far, make it a positive game to him and when he finds it, make it just a little farther or a little harder. If he gets off course bring him back and start again. Be very repetitive but very patient. Remember it’s a puppy so start with treats and move up ever so often. And when they do find them try to teach him when he does find to sit and look up at you for a signal that he’s found what he’s looking for, at the end of the day he wants to please you, try making it as positive and fun as possible!! And train him every day for about 20 minutes each day and be very repetitive and patient with him/her and it should go well!!
