I agree completely. So many content creators follow their comments for just the first few hours, or some even for the first day, and then never reply or react to any later comments so I presume they aren't reading them. Maybe they're creating so many videos and getting so many comments that they cannot interact with their followers. If so, that's great for them. But it is always great when a content creator responds to anything just to show he's still reading. Then, if he chooses to not respond to our post (my post) then I assume it was that he didn't have that answer or the question wasn't interesting to him - and that's his choice. Just seeing and knowing that he's reading them means I might get my questions replied to - if I do my part to make them interesting enough for his channel.

Love these videos! We are finally getting around to teaching my coonhound scentwork with these! We are on day 4 now, and one thing we are struggling with is the dog occasionally overlooking the scent. This is happening mostly on our first few searches. We are using birch odor in an odor tin and doing some work outdoors and some indoors. The boxes became far too easy for him - he wouldn't sniff each one but as soon as entering the room, he would run directly to the correct container with odor. So we are doing field searches at this point!

Thanks so much for this video--it looks simple for me to follow the steps. I have neuro/memorydifficulties and so I appreciate the small steps, clearly shown. I'm trying to self-train a service dog for mobility assist on very long distance walking/biking adventures, and as he is a 2 year old Coonhound I think scent detection will give him a great outlet for using his greatest asset and joy, his NOSE!!! for fun, exercise, and to learn to focus. Thanks! Once a dog knows one odor, it's much easier to teach a new odor. You can also train a dog off of an odor by presenting it and no longer rewarding when the dog indicates on it.

Hi! I'm a bit unclear on some of the steps in this video- why are we starting with a cinder block and moving on to a bucket, then a box? Is it just to get the dog accustomed to sticking their noses into different containers? Part of this question stems from sheer laziness- I'd far rather cut a hole in a box than cover the cinder block in duct tape :) Thank you!!

Hahaha! It is a pain to cover the cinder blocks in duck tape, but yes, it gets the dog accustomed to sticking their noses into different containers and helps generalize the dog to the training. This makes it easier for the dog when we transfer them to real life style searches, such as building and vehicle searches. I also use tubes when training, but I thought three examples were enough. :)

My doberman who died of a broken heart after a separation was fully "scent trained" in that as a fully trained guard dog, she could tell if a person was thinking about doing wrong by the odor their body emitted.

@@NateSchoemer She was. She originally belonged to a US Navy admiral who was stationed in Belgium, where he bought the dog and where she got all her training. Great protection for his house. When he moved back to the USA he and his wife separated and I ended up with his dog. Later, I moved out of the state, and had to leave the dog with his ex-wife and the dog died soon after, of a broken heart. So, Doberman Pinscher dogs are not notorious for showing affection, but she would lay on my lap or lean very hard into my leg wherever I went. She loved me. She knew when someone was outside looking in... Growled, let us know. Really miss her.

Thanks! I like to use freeze dried dog food. With a puppy or a new dog in training, I will often start with a high-quality dry food during the training process. I also usually give the puppy raw goat milk from answers, to help ensure the dog is getting enough quality nutrition. If I don't have enough time for a training session, then I soak the kibble in water or raw goat milk and stuff it into a kong or raw bone, then freeze it. In addition, I train with freeze-dried dog food, but that can be very pricey. amzn.to/2W88zMf Usually, a high-quality kibble will be okay. I transition them to raw when all the main training is completed and then use the freeze dried dog food while training

Nate, I have seen in a few of your videos that you will use both a break and a free command. This video is a good example. I am really new to dog training and your videos have been a great help but I am having trouble finding the distinction between the 2 commands anywhere. Is there one or are you just using them as variations of the same thing(terminal marker)? If there is a distinction what is it and how do you train for one over the other? I watched your video on terminal marker vs. continuation marker but there is no mention of a release marker in that video which is what believe I have heard you call the free command.

I’ve always liked using cinder blocks, mainly because of how sturdy and heavy they are. The weight prevents the dogs from moving or knocking them over during searches. Boxes and unused/empty paint cans also work well.

I struggle with prepping fancy raw food for my dog but I’ve figured out a system to make it really easy. Buy a good pet mince blend in bulk and spoon it into silicone muffin bar trays, then freeze. Once frozen you can pop them out and keep them in a freezer bag. Put a brick in your dogs bowl a few hours before feeding time and keep it in the fridge so it can defrost, and after feeding put another one straight in and refrigerate again so the next meal is always defrosted and ready to go.
