Teach your dog to find your scent on an article. This exercise is done in AKC Obedience as well as Mondio Ring Sport. Your dog needs to detect your scent off of an article among others without your scent. In this video I give you the basics to teach your dog to learn this skill. The full length version (20+ minutes) of this lesson is available in my member section as well as part 2 coming next week.
robertcabral.com
This is a fun skill to teach your dog and can be taught with just a little bit of patience...
Your dog has an amazing nose. He can smell as well as you can see. Your dog's nose is his most powerful sense. Harnessing that skill and teaching him how to use it in a fun way is awesome for your dog!

IDK how you add some scents to the object but maybe putting them in a ziplock baggie with tongs and letting it sit for a while to disperse the scent.

I taught my dog this skill with the cardboard tubes from the inside of a toilet roll instead of pieces of wood - if anyone can't get to a hardware store during this lockdown, I found them to be a useful alternative. I was just looking for 3 objects that looked the same, and that was what I could find easily.

I decided to teach my 6 year old Siberian Husky how to discern scents just for fun, but also to see how well he could do it, as huskies aren't really known as tracking dogs or anything. Today was his first day of learning and he actually did pretty well. Obviously its only day one so he kept getting distracted and would wander off, but once I had food in my pocket (which he knows is meant as a reward) he would focus more. Got him to follow a small trail of something that had my scent on it and he did it really well. Just goes to show, any dog, if given the time and patience, can learn to do this.

I will train my dog(s) to 'sniff' dog poop in the yard and stop over it. Then I will shovel it up and NOT step in it.... Useful command, easy to smell, and saves a lot of annoyance and is easy for a dog to make a snack treat as he does it !

Robert, I wanted tp praise you for your dedication when it comes to training canines and thank you for sharing it with others. Your videos are real, informational and direct, which is appreciated after seeing some others. I have a question pertaining to scent discrimination when it comes to law enforcement. I have handled multiple police service dogs and went as far as training a couple in both disciplines. Presently I am a K9 Supervisor working in a Sheriff's Office in Texas, and our jurisdiction mainly consists of rural area. When it comes to tracking suspects we use ground disturbance, but I want to take the training further and use hard surface tracking and this video makes me believe we can succeed. Can you advise me on steps to take that you have learned in regards to training canines on hard surface tracking? thanks... Brian

I would like to get full step by step access to your trainings. I watch all of your videos. I have a Belgian Malinois as well. She is really well trained relative to other house pets. She does down, sit, stand, place, wait, out, leave it, come, speak, shake, closes the front door, turns off my lights, prays (sit pretty), heel, switch (opposite heel), between, fetches ball and frisbee, come, down from a distance, roll over, right/left spin, play dead when shot, wont cross my threshold nor the end of my driveway unless invited . Though she does all of these skills, she can do them all better. I know that it's a me thing not a her thing. I want to train myself to be a better dog owner/trainer. This is my first dog I've owned as an adult. I knew the reality of getting a Mal before I got her. I watched over 500 dog training videos on YT before getting her. I say all of this not to pat my back but the opposite. I know I need to be better. I want to start personal guard dog training with her but haven't because I know I have not been trained myself. I want to fine tune her already learned skills. I saw this video where these two pits sat, stood, and downed all without ever moving their front paws. I want that for my Mal. Do you have programs with step by step training so I do it right with her? She turns 2 on May 4th, 2020. Thank you and I hope to work with you to make me better.

I’ve got a little cavoodle so I didn’t think this would be the right breed to enjoy this kind of thing. But when I play fetch in the paddock, if she loses track of which stick I threw she uses her nose to figure it out so she might be a natural afterall!
