I made a change to Nidoking that meant it would deal with Volcarona, and then immediately got rid of Nidoking entirely. Also, my Nidoking was a scarfer until I put Tailwind Golbat on the team, at which point it became Life Orb, so your read was 100% accurate.

Nihilego is fun to use in Monotype, better on mono Rock than Poison imo, but could be really good in your team given Tailwind + Meteor Beam setup, should take 2 or 3 mons out with ease

I love Monotype in general but Mono-Fire is my favorite Hyper Offense team for sure! I like running Morning Sun on Volcarona over Substitute because it frees up Psychic for Bug coverage (I find Dark types are insanely common in Monotype, in my experience) due to not really needing Toxapex coverage after a Q-Dance + Sun (you could potentially be worried about Haze but I don't see it too often).
