Early N55 used in E series had rod bearing issues but from what I've read since 2013 there was a revision where the N55 uses the same rod bearings as the S55 in the M3/M4. Is this true? Also, what are your thoughts on the B58? Apparently its the most reliable engine made by BMW in a while, hence why Toyota use them in the Supra.

Cool videos on your page, I've got X5M E70 I'm planning on replacing the rod bearings as I do with any performance car I buy, I'm also thinking of replacing the main bearings in place while I'm that deep into the job one at a time of course maybe loosening all the caps slightly, question is have you ever replaced main bearings in situe I'm wondering would I be able to slide out the top bearings especially the thrust bearing in theory it could work any ideas and input would be cool

Rod cap bolts can be reused as long as none of the threads are damaged. That is a new engine manufacturing practice. It’s more important that the person knows the correct torque procedure and sequence. Most people don’t torque then properly because they don’t quite understand torque and angle or clamping load.

N55 rod bearing not as common, most of the issue is oil starvation. For example replacing ofhg on N55, you need to prime the oil system, many don’t and then have rod bearing issues. There are n55s with over 200k+ miles and no rod bearing issues. Another reason is poor maintenance, not doing oil changes on time or using poor quality oil will damage rod bearings on the n55. N55 engines can go for 250-300k miles with original turbos.

Also on a side note... I love how everyone blames the rod bearings on all these newer cars but ignores the elephant in the room. The biggest issue to even N54,N55 is failing leaking injectors. The fuel that leaks and goes past the cylinder walls and into the oil, thinning the viscosity of the oil is what I believe damages many of these newer DI engines. Some people have leaking injectors or old non index 12s and keep running the engines till they’ve done too much damage to go back. How many people do you know with injector problems running cars like that all because they don’t wanna fork out 1200+ on new sets. Unfortunately.... you gotta pay to play with any platform that has high HP even more when modding. Unfortunately.... some people still think these bmws are Hondas 🙄

It’s true, leaking injectors will wash down the cylinder walls and potentially turn new 5w-40 synthetic oil into 0w-20, which the nuclear hot s63 will eat up and burn in less than 300 miles. Get a set of Index 12s before anything.

Hi Nathan, would you mind sharing if these engineering issues with BMW engines are ones that are tuned or raced at a track ? I ask because if a BMW engine is maintained correctly and driven by soccer moms to the grocery store and STILL plagued by these issues then it’s more alarming. Alarming as in how on earth can a company the size of BMW with a long history engineer an engine that fails with normal use. Some of these engine issues are not acceptable. Meaning how were these engines not failing during their extreme testing that takes place in research and development before it goes into production ? It’s like the engineers were asleep. I understand that no matter what every manufacturer isn’t going to be able to build an engine that is always trouble free. Even Toyota has hiccups. However, it seems as if BMW is having many many issues. More so than other manufacturers.

Sorry, but a lot of this is foreign to me, but it is interesting. I am thinking about purchasing a 2013 X6 50ix with 35k miles. While I'm planning on paying for an inspection, I'm still leery because of the issues I'm hearing. With regular maintenance, is this a good buy or still a poor decision?

Get a lexus. BMWs are always having some kinda issues when the miles get slightly higher

is it a TU? I bought a 2014 X6 and was surprised to find out (when the rod bearings went out at 93K) that it is NOT a TU!

You should be fine. The n63 cars from 2014 and up aren’t accually the n63. It’s the n63tu and it’s way better. Way more reliable. You’ll be fine. But I always recommend maintenance before performance. That means spark plugs injectors coils gaskets and that’s really it. And if you want any more reliably it’s always an option to replace the charge coolers. 🙂
