In this relaxing video, I’ll be building a beautiful native terrarium with local moss species here in the UK. A native terrarium is a great way to reconnect with nature, why not try making a mini ecosystem like this yourself!? They are also super easy & cheap to make! All you need is a container and a little creativity:) enjoy the video!
When collecting materials from nature always be responsible, remember we are trying to recreate nature, not destroy it.
Check out my Ebook, it’s perfect for beginners! terrariumdesig...

As the substrate was straight from the forest floor it’ll be full with microfauna! Small springtails & other bugs will help keep the terrarium healthy & almost maintenance free! Hope you enjoy this more relaxing video:)

So if I source all of my plants, soil, and rocks from outside, will there most likely already be springtails and other microfauna in the tank? I only ask because it's a real pain to catch springtails. Underrated content by the way!

@@kestreldesign1760 Depending on where you live and what season it is when you collect your materials, they should be. Springtails will live anywhere there's sufficient moisture, including on plants instead of in soil. But as long as you're not grabbing pure sand or in the middle of a severe drought your average patch of soil should have plenty.

So I have hit a giant pot hole in life ATM. I lost father just before Christmas, and now I am fighting for my job. Normally to cope will be destructive, you have encouraged me to just go ham with terrariums, and connect back with nature. Maybe it's what life just had in-store for me. I also have been getting into micro life's and keeping them in some of my T's more than spring tails and isopods though most pods do not do well.

This is precisely what I needed as a beginner, I was about to go gather local materials for such terrarium this afternoon, and this video comes up, showing exactly how I should do it and how easy it actually is. Thank you 😊So relaxing btw.

very similar to the serpa design "free" terrarium, as a beginner terraiumer, im a big fan of your channel. Do you use springtail bugs in your setups?

Serpa design is an inspiration! Yes springtails are great:) I didn’t put any in here as they were already living in the substrate

Very cool! Just had a foraging expedition like this myself and put together a couple small jar terrariums. Please post updates on how this one does over time! Are you planning to put in springtails or expect them to be in the soil you gathered?

One question, when taken from the earth comes a lot of animals together or bacteria. Isn't it good to sterilize? And i lov the vid

Consider that the organisms in the soil were probably already part of a healthy ecosystem and doing their part to keep it healthy. There's likely to be beneficial soil bacteria that help break down detritus and return nutrients to the soil, and there are probably also small scavengers like springtails already living in it.

I binge watching so many terrarium videos in KZbin and your channel is the best one to understand. I want to ask, how do you take care of your many terrariums? Does every terrarium size have the same maintenance schedule? How to determine the right treatment time for each terrarium?

Thank you! They pretty much take care of themselves with very little input from me. Some do require more care then others but it’s just a case of doing a quick check every week to see how they are doing & if I need to step in with some maintenance:)

Hi, I have a question. I have a rather large terrarium. I'm a beginner, so I probably shouldn't have gone so big on my first Terrarium, but I was in Sedona, Arizona and found the most unique Terrarium and terrarium stand at a killer price. I wish I could post a picture, to show all you guys. My question is how many bugs do I put in? It's a large round 45 inches in circumference thick glass ball. Thanks for your help, and for being here. I love ur channel 💝
@OnlineJeeper
@OnlineJeeper Жыл бұрын
If by "bugs" you mean the springtails, they basically regulate their own population. You put some in, you can add a good amount if you're saying the space is so big, but they will regulate the population depending on how much food there is to eat. If there's more food, more springtails will be born. Not enough food, some will die off, which will then fertilize the substrate for the plants. I hope the terrarium is doing well! As it's been a few months since your comment 😊
