Statement by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg with the Prime Minister of Finland, Sanna Marin, 28 February 2023.
🗣 | NATO Secretary General:
Thank you so much, Sanna. It's great to be back in Helsinki.
It's great to be back in this building and meet with the leaders of the Social Democratic Parties and the Trade Unions of the Nordic countries.
This is actually a forum I used to participate in myself for many, many years.
But now I'm here as Secretary General of NATO and of course we meet at a critical time for our security. President Putin's war against Ukraine grinds on and there are no signs that he's changing his plans. He wants to control Ukraine and he is not planning for peace, he's planning for more war. And therefore it is extremely important that we provide support to Ukraine.
I commend the strong support that Finland has provided to Ukraine. This makes a difference on the battlefield every day. Then I also meet, later on today, the President, Sauli Niinistö, and Foreign Minister, Pekka Haavisto, and in all my meetings today, I expect that the issue of Finnish and Swedish membership will be an important topic.
And as you all know, all NATO Allies made an historic decision to invite both Finland and Sweden to become members of the Alliance. We are making progress. A couple of weeks ago, I met with President Erdoğan and we agreed to have a meeting with Finland, Sweden, Türkiye in Brussels next week. My message is that both Finland and Sweden have delivered on what they promised in the trilateral agreement they made with Türkiye last June in Madrid.
So the time is now to ratify and to fully welcome both Finland and Sweden as members. Thank you.

No US F-16's for Turkey if they do not ratify BOTH nations (Sweden & Finland) for accession into NATO! Turn up the pressure. Turkey is only playing this game for domestic electoral purposes. This one man is holding up a global process -much like Putin. I was happy to hear that NATO would already react to any aggression against the two nations.

Perhaps the 28 NATO members that have ratified Finlands and Swedens succession should make it clear that if Turkey and Hungry do not ratify, then the continued membership of these two… “allies” will be called into question

In any major war I would rather have Turkey on my side rather than against. As tempting as it is to play this hardball it's not appropriate as other pressure can be applied to Turkey on this issue.

Absolutely agree. Membership should be with an 80% majority so that one Russian-funded country can't undermine the process. Certainly, the consensus is important but unanimity should be removed.

It's great how Finland and Sweden are announced to be in a protection of NATO already by Stoltenberg, even though last two of the NATO countries has not yet done their ratifications. He actually has announced that "it's inconceivable that there would be any threat towards these countries without NATO intervention". Peace on earth ✌️🙌

Realistically, NATO needs to have Biden make an unequivocal statement backed by legislative leaders that the US will come to Finland's aid quickly and in force if Finland is attacked or an attack appears imminent. Sweden I'm less worried about, but, add them too if it will help.

Yes, of course it is true. Even before the war, Ukraine was itching to become a member of NATO and they actually put in an application in 2008 but the political situation was not suitable. They've always known that Russia can not be trusted. There are other nations who are not NATO members but they consider themselves allies of NATO, for example, Switzerland, Austria, Ireland and a few others.

Sweden and Finland should immediately join NATO. Not that Sweden and Finland want to go to war with Russia, but to protect their people if it is attacked by any country... Have any NATO member countries ever invaded another country? until now there has been no since world war 2.

Gooood ! Love this process. Scandinavia 4 nations, poland and 3 baltic countries are a solid skirt facing north russian front in case of its agressivity anywhere in this region. We need to stronger our european solidarity together. From north to south, and western to eastern borders. True good step in order to feel all of us in security.

Unbelievable, how majority of NATO members, specially the ones that really matter (nukes of course), allow that 2 members make a fuss and delay the process of these 2 great assets joining the organisation!! This should be a simple: "accept" or leave!! Unless of course, the members would present some reasonable reason why the process should be delayed or rejected: which seems unlikely!! (much more likely for reasons for some existing to be pushed out!!! ; ) Turkey (current regime)? Really?

Sadly I think NATO needs to start preparing for nuclear war. If Putin was capable of rational thought the war would already be over. The fact that Russia has already lost so many soldiers and has no hope of victory is an indication that Putin will escalate the war by any means that he has. Eventually he is going to reach the point where the nuclear option is his only option.

As stupid Putin is i don't think Putin is stupid enough to go Nuclear. He knows that this would be the damn end of Russia the exact opposite he's looking for. And his allie China would prevent Putin to go Nuclear at all cost.

Putin knows using nuclear weapons will be the end of the russian federation and a complete dismantlement of the federation by Nato. Russia stands no chance in a nuclear war. Even with its 6000 bombs. Nato only has to bomb 1 city = Moscow. Russia has to bomb almost the whole west from USA to Canada to France, Turkey, Germany and more. It's impossible for Russia to win agaist so many targets

Putin alone cannot launch nukes, it requires multiple people in the chain to accomplish. During the cold war there was a false command to launch nukes against the US, but the ones pressing the button refused to act. This serves as a good example of how intricate the system is. This isnt a GI Joe movie, nuclear war doesnt just happen due to a war in 1 country. Of course its always good to be prepared for even the worst outcomes, but i would wager the situation is far less hazardous than during the cuban missile crisis.
