For the record, in the manga Gildarts looks less like Shanks, in some versions he has blond hair, the anime made similarities stand out. Because of this many accuse the author for lacking creativity and stealing character designs which is untrue.

This chapter was *so* good and could've been an development point to Natsu, but everything flushes to the toilet at the end of this arc. The lesson "live to fight another day" which Gildarts gives to Natsu is SO wasted.

Gildarts is strongest wizard in the guild for a reason, even Master would lose to him. Without mentioning his overpowered crush magic and absurt amount of magical power, he is very experienced mage and still not old, so he has much time to grow even stronger(and this will be show in the future, where he will be even stronger). He is of course also very talented, there is no one stronger than him in his generation.

Bit fair of context gildarts is magicly stronger then fairytails master Gildarts refuses to take the titel becaus he himself knows he isnt cut out to lead And yes he just relaxes himself and can great shockwaves of pure magic power Master makarov needs to activate law to get equally powerful shine as gildarts For example makarov would be a soldier holding a bazooka but gildarts would be a straight up heavy tank with rotating fire modules for constant firing

If you think about it, this is exactly what erza was talking about in episode 4(?) when she chastised Natsu for stealing an s class mission. Winning the fight itself is not really the point of that stage, it’s about recognizing when to back off, whether to regroup or to utilize a different strategy. In Natsu’s case, this manifested into knowing and recognizing the limits of his own power against an opponent stronger than him.

Gildarts holds his own against one of the strongest people in Fairy Tail at one time. He failed the 100 year quest because he went at it all alone which was a mistake because as we saw in the continuation of the new manga, it's a party quest.
