Autobytel recently took a trip to the Southern California Natural Gas Storage Facility in Playa Del Rey. Eric Noble from The Car Lab is on hand to discuss alternative fuel such as CNG powered vehicles. Natural Gas is relatively cheap when compared to regular gasoline. Domestically natural gas is in almost every home in the nation powering everything from your stove to your heating systems. Well CNG can also be used to power automobiles.
The GNC powered cars like the GMC Acadia have a small tank a little larger than a scuba tank located in the spare tire well. This is where the compressed natural gas is stored. The tanks and vehicles all meet Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards and have been tested to withstand rear impact crashes. When the natural gas runs out, the vehicles seamlessly transitions back to gas power.

I've been running my cars on CNG for over 3 years now. CNG only costs $1.50 per gallon. I adapted the cars myself for $1500 each. Still runs on gasoline for long trips.

Also you need a equivalent PSI refill source to fill your tank. A 3000 psi pump will only fill your tank to 3000 psi even though you have a 3600 psi tank. Filling a tank in warm weather makes CNG expand and becomes less dense resulting in less energy stored in your tank. This is also why tanks are rated for double the capacity. If you fill up in cold weather and it cuts off at 3600 psi like normal and it warms up that psi rating will increase. But the amount of energy does not change.

Ideal ride would be a plug in prius with 5 gallons for propane just change the tank just like your BBQ, with solar panel charger. Hack that prius place a pop up camping device topper that you can hang hammocks in. Add a generator to power the charger this car will power it's AC HEATER when under charge. So run charger 3 hours you will have full charge on battery good to go for 10 miles. Build a 5 gallon water heater too that recirculated water around the exhaust to give you shower power.

Married or single you can still use a 50mpg RV. Quad fueled would just insure you would have something to burn no matter what. We see way too many people design a traditional life and some place get in a jam and find themselves outdoors. Reach that level it is very difficult to recover. I have gotten down to a motorcycle and tent and fought my way back up. Point is your efficient transportation is very important with it you can recover easily you have options others don't.

amazing how this cng and Lpg conversion is new in US, may be coz the petrol(gas as they say in US) was cheaper here as compared to other countries. i had my suzuki esteem converted to LPG back in 1998 in India for $500 and the car ran 80,000kms on Lpg without any problem. a 14kg cylinder would give around 250-300 kms depending on the weather, more mileage in summer as compared to winters as the cylinder tend to get cold and hence result in low mileage.

Trend has been lately people that get hybrids end up getting some solar. Usually grid tied but it helps to offset the use of the car. I got my hybrid for fuel efficiency not to look like I am hugging trees. If I get solar panels it too will be for saving money. I believe we should do what we can to insure our money will be there when we need it. That requires we be as efficient as possible. There is no place for vanity if you wish to avoid poverty. You are going to do things that are practical.

I wish I had a crystal ball to pick the best option on predicting fuel prices. Since I don't have one, I have no option but sticking with vehicles that offer best fuel mileage or lowest cost per mile, best resale value and least maintenance possible. The result of this equation must be something that most people would not bother with. My guess? Well...buying a lightly used 4 cylinder car (cash), drive it for 2-3 years (max 30 Km) with top maintenance, and then sale it--the savings on doing that would be better than any alternative fuel option.

Grandpa & Max show they’ll be super useful up north where electric has low performance and there are plenty of natural gas deposits. It can also be made from anaerobic fermentation of sewage, ag waste, and fast growing plants.

Funny how the Prius is the best selling vehicle on the road. I just seen a brand new one with a burnt out headlight. Is it really that hard for people not to see their headlight is burnt out I mean its pretty easy to see even without looking at your headlights. A lot of GM vehicles burn their headlights out too.
