“Beauty isn’t a texture!” SAY IT AGAIN!!! It’s so frustrating how even the black community doesn’t really seem to accept 4C hair in its natural state 😔

I have been natural for almost 30 years. I love the last clip so much. The only reason 4c hair is seen as hard to do is because hair care, marketing, instruction and products are are centered on 2 hair types (😖) and anything that isn’t that is seen as difficult. 4c hair is easy when you stop trying to make it so what it doesn’t want to do. Our hair is a natural cooling system. It’s supposed to shrink. 1-3 type hair was designed to move hair away from the scalp. Our hair was designed to hold it to the scalp. If you work with 4c hair it will work with you.

Don't pay her no mind sis. Unfortunately older generations speak from a place of pain. They were never taught how to take care of their hair and unlike us didn't have access to all of these platforms that helped us to figure our hair out without our parents. Natural hair is still a painful topic in the black community. I got a lot of hate when I started out too, most was from family. But after some years it's normal to them now and they actually have embraced it.

My aunt likes to talk about my hair as well. Being a male who’s going through the process of growing my natural hair out I hear a lot from certain women in my family. Funny thing is they all talk about me and their hair is fried and thin from relaxing for decades. It probably stems from jealousy so never forget that all healthy hair is good hair no matter the texture.

Probably because of the repression they have seen. Let’s be honest many, many BW do be obsessed with long hair, and most of the time when a BW cuts her hair it’s because She had too because of some type of damage. Aka the “big chop” after a relaxer. That was the biggest rep in the natural hair community for a while. It’s all about the representation. It’s like when people thought when white girls cut their hair they either had a bad break up, or were lesbians 💀. Because of the stereotype. I too cut my hair by choice but I still understand why people think the way they do. 🤷🏾‍♀️

Relating to one of the tiktoks, I read a book about how in pre colonial Africa taking care of each others hair was a coveted time. We never had to make time for it because it was literally apart of everyday living. Doing someone’s hair was a way of saying I love you and want to to take care of your hair. Colonization changed the connotation to instill self-hatred. We should start looking at hair care like a privilege again in honor of our ancestors.

@monember2722
@monember2722 2 жыл бұрын
@@dezanaygrier6552 I don't see that it's frowned upon by society in general. There are relatively few instances where any black person's afro textured hair is actually attacked. The situations I've seen where non blacks have taken issue have usually been based on it being big and loose and distracting for the environment. Most black people know how to style their hair for the environment they are in and live their lives with few problems based on hairstyle or texture. Our community on the other hand have some hangups. But even then, if you are confident about your hair, you really don't have an issue. I think some people tend to feel insecure and are afraid people think negatively about their hair when most people honestly don't have a problem. Like I said, most naturals are going day to day with very little push back from larger society.

The thing is, when I turned natural (I was sort of forced to because my skin miraculously turned allergic to relaxer, and my wallet filed for divorce) people tried to turn me into the Maya Angelou for advice. I hated it, because though it's so good to share, they assumed their hair would look like mine, and it didn't. Plus, my hair dresser at the time was white and gave great advice on taking care of hair, but people would give me shade just because she wasn't black. And I tell you how hard it was to find her. But I had to cut it all off after depression matting, and with my short hair, I feel kind of liberated. I can start over with my best info and experience. It's my hair, and keeping it healthy makes me feel awesome.

Hair that curls is African textured. Africa is a continent not a country. It has at least 54 countries and loads of ethnic groups. The people of Africa have the widest genetic diversity on earth so this means people from Africa have all hair types. I’m writing this to request that you always continue to do some natural hair content. I see a lot of old-school natural hair KZbinrs, especially if they have 4c hair, are getting out of the game. It’s very important for younger women and men who are deciding to wear their hair natural that they have positive mentors to look to. Even if you decide to decrease the amount of natural hair contact that you do, always make sure that you continue to do some natural hair content. You are a mentor for many natural hair women especially with 4c hair. Your content is great

I even considered heat training? And only have it shrunken a couple of times on a year? Because I can't go back to relaxers that's a commitment I do not take lightly. I can't have my hair just NEVER shrink again because I 😱 ... _relaxed it_ But anyway yeah I'll have to put it in braids (for the first time this year since last September)

Does your hair have significant shrinkage (i.e at least 40% or more)? If your hair has any significant level of shrinkage, your hair has curls. Curls are formed by shrinkage, which is why curly hair looks shorter than straight hair with the same length. I personally think the narrative of "wanting your curly head to have defined curls is you wanting to get closer to white hair" is extremely dangerous and will leave many naturals frustrated and hating their hair, as curly hair (some naturals call it coily hair which is cute) is literally the opposite spectrum of straight hair, and it is your head of hair. How is wanting your curly hair to curl a bad thing? Isn't that way better than wanting straight hair when you have curly hair? Every other group of people with straight or wavy hair want their hair to look the best in its defined and hydrated state; why is it only an issue when naturals with curly hair want that too? You wet every part of your body daily when you bath, why do naturals not wet their hair daily too? Is hair not a part of your body? Other races of people hydrate their hair daily to every 3 days under the shower water, which is why their hair is so moisturised and defined. Naturals dont, that's why their hair is dehydrated. The number one biggest issue among naturals is dehydrated hair. Dehydrated hair is the cause of all their hair problems, from looking dry, feeling brittle, hard to detangle, slower hair growth, single strand knots, split ends, loss of dark hair colour (some ppl with black hair notice their hair turning brassy/brown after a while) and, you guessed it, matted or undefined hair. There's nothing wrong with undefined hair when you're intentionally making it undefined for a hairstyle (e.g afros, blowouts etc), but when it is undefined unintentionally, especially when wet, that is a huge sign of dehydrated hair. Now imagine adding flat-irons to this emergency state of hair. Is it any wonder why it breaks off easily? Our hair, just like everyone else, needs water. Starpuppy's hair started getting thicker and healthier when she simply incorporated more hydration in her hair routine. Imagine if she did it daily. Her hair will thrive and achieve everything she thought her hair can't do. I know many ppl have hard water which can cause alot of problems for their hair, so in that case, they need to get a water softener. Every natural who has bought lots of products or hair extensions/wigs can afford to buy a water softener. If you cant afford a water softener, save up for it and use filtered or bottled water on your hair for now. The water softener will make hard water into soft water, so your hair and skin will thrive. Wetting your hair daily allows the natural oils from your scalp to cover the hair shaft, making it even more moisturised, hydrated and healthy, and makes it so much easier to detangle your hair. This is the secret to why other races of ppl's hair can detangle so easily. No its not their hair type; even straight hair with no lubrication will tangle very easily, as anyone who has combed straight hair extensions with no coating, grease or oil will tell you (or even those matted hair vids will tell you). It's their sebum/natural oils from their scalp that have been distributed by the water when they wet it daily that makes it very easy to detangle their hair. Sebum also naturally defines the hair, so your dont need as much product, if at all. Now if your own natural oils/sebum defines your hair to have curls, then undefined hair is actually the unnatural state of your hair, and defined hair is the natural state of your hair. That completely debunkes the "curls means getting closer to whiteness" false narrative. Naturals should start doing this routine too to make detangling so much easier. Yes, you can achieve defined hair if your hair is curly/coily. If your hair has significant shrinkage, your hair is curly. I'll show you some inspiration for how to achieve that with an instagram page: @that_loulou instagram.com/that_loulou/ (she drops some hints on how to achieve this in alot of her posts, and she specialises in hydrating and defining curly hair). Her daughter has 4c hair, see 4c hair in its defined state: instagram.com/p/CLYMreQBVFx/ instagram.com/p/COfVXPGLhdW/. Example of her hydration progress: instagram.com/p/B_mtoA8D3DN/ You may or may not have the same hair type as that guy, but there's only one way to find out, isnt there ;) ? One way to find out your own unique curl pattern :). You can achieve defined hair if you want. Every natural can. Even naturals with kinky straight hair can in their own kinky straight way. Dry hair is not the natural state of our hair. I hope this tired narrative that your hair cant curl if you have '4c' hair dies out, and naturals start embracing hydrating their hair daily. That way they can see the full potential of what their hair can do and start loving it for what it truly is when hydrated, as it should be.

We often say "I wish I had someone at that age to tell me" or "Listen to me so you won't make the same mistakes I did" but...young people are young and they learn, make mistakes, have troubles...Been like that for humans. The lesson and truth is there but it's up to that person to take it in (I was the same). Natural hair movement is nothing new as my 65+ mother told me. It come and goes, some keep with it, some don't. And it's still the same conversation. I think my mom was sick of me regurgitating crap she heard in the 60s and 70s. Can we call this a cycle? "when it's like the coolest hair!" Omg YES it is! My thin blonde "fair" hair is easy: I basically just roll out of bed. It's no picnic if you want it to have volume or style but when I keep it short and don't care about styling I swear I don't even have to brush it and can take ten minute showers with minimal product. But it can never be as incredible as 4c hair. It may be easy for me to be a slob as I am but it can't ever be as glamorous, elegant, stylish, POWERFUL and beautiful as your 4c hair. You rock.

“Who’s shading you about your hair?” Not so much anymore but *My Mother* has always been the main one shading me about the way I choose to wear my hair! She had some major shit to say when I was dyeing it red as a teenager, and she had some shit to say when I started embracing my natural texture “It’s just so big” “You need to cut it, you look so much prettier with a bob” My mane ain’t even that thick or curly (2b or 2c at most)- but what I’ve realized that what she’s really mad about is the fact that I’ve inherited *her* texture, and that I *like* it and want to *enhance* it, and not hide it with a straightener.
