Do leopards change their spots? Maybe they do, but how do you know? Really know? And who wants to grant parole and the person murders or tapes again? I could never live with myself if that happened.

People aren’t leopards. We are constantly learning and growing and yes, changing. I certainly hope you aren’t your 14-year-old self anymore; I know at 53 I’m not. There is a price to pay for commuting a crime, but when it comes to juvenile offenders, I feel that there needs to be some effort to rehabilitate them towards possible reintegration into society.

The point of the movie is to illustrate how one simple decision as a child doesn’t dictate how you will be grown up. A adolescent mind is not fully developed, and thus is it right for a system to hold an adult accountable for life? It’s easy to decide black and white responses but even the smallest accident could make you just as guilty in the eyes of 12. We shouldn’t be so rash because not every story is as simple as “did you this.” It should be “what lead you to this action”, but that’s never the case among jury’s.
