I made fermented garlic and honey and let me tell you, it WORKS! My dad brought home a cold and he had it for 3 weeks. My 2 year old son brought it to our house because my parents watch him while my husband and I are at work. I caught it and started taking a quarter clove with a little of the honey twice a day. My cold didn't even last 2 days. I take a dose of it and now my fire cider as well once a day. I just wish I could get my husband and son to take it.

Hi Shaye! I listen to your (and Angela's) podcast and LOVE it! Many times I've heard you mention wanting to learn more about herbs and I reply to you as I'm doing dishes or mopping floors, "Yes! Learn, my friend, Learn!!!" ; ) Your herb garden is lovely. I think you and I may be the only two people on earth who actually needed to plant nettles! lol I started a patch a few years ago and it's thriving! Herbalist David Hoffman is known to have said, "When in doubt...choose nettles." It's good for so many things. As for your marshmallow-kudos to you for growing it! You'll want to let it get well established and then harvest a bit of the root to use as medicine. Marshmallow is a demulcent-slimy slippery stuff- that has multiple uses. It's a great herb for helping heal the gut and it is useful as a secondary herb in many formulas where it helps soothe and heal tissues. Be a little cautious with when you take it. If someone takes pharmaceuticals or other synthetic drugs (or supplements), they may want to use formulas including marshmallow a couple of hours before or after taking those drugs/supplements, as it can thicken the lining of the gut and cause those things to be malabsorbed. Marshmallow leaf works to a lesser degree in the same way and may be suitable if you want a lower dose of the herb--like a maintenance dose. Oregano is a super medicine! When we're feeling under the weather I add lots of it to bone broths, soups, etc. and I also keep oregano tincture on hand. While I don't personally care for its flavor very much, I find that I crave it when ill. Any of the "pizza" herbs like oregano, thyme, basil, and rosemary have similar actions to varying degrees--each having a strong suit. Parsley is a cooling herb. One thing to note about parsley and sage is that they are drying herbs and should not be used in medicinal doses by lactating women (or animals) -although culinary doses should be fine- as they can dry milk. If you want to dry milk (false pregnancies in dogs, women who are weaning babies, etc.) then they are helpful for that purpose. Another note: Herbs like parsley, cilantro, and basil "keep" better either frozen (buzz in a blender with a bit of water and freeze in small amounts) or possibly freeze-dried (I haven't tried that, but I'd guess it would keep them fairly well). I always freeze parsley, cilantro, and basil. I made a couple of jars of fermented honey/garlic/onion/cayenne and we like to use it in multiple ways, but one way we use it often is as a topping on pizzas--just after they come out of the oven. And speaking of ovens...when I saw your pizza oven video, I took my 14yo to Lowe's and bought what we needed to make one. We've enjoyed it SO much! We had to improvise on the patio pavers, but we found stones that worked! I am grateful for the idea! Also, I want to thank you for your video on making/using a dry sourdough starter. I had failed as sourdough a discouraging amount of times, but your dry starter video changed my game! I have never had a loaf fail since using a dry starter. THANK YOU!

I love this. We are the same here. Side note, we have an outdoor well for animals. I put heat tracing on the pressure tank and the piping to the faucet, and so far, it works. I use a thermocube to turn it on and off. We also out in two frost free faucets around the place.

I use dried parsley for UTI, the chlorophyll in the tea made from the dried parsley kills the bacteria. My Chiropractor told me over 35 years ago about this treatment for UTI infections and I have helped many of my family and friends. I always have parsley in my pantry just for this remedy. I keep fermented onions for sore throats, but I think fermented garlic sound great.

"Let Food be thy Medicine". Using an herb medicinally is simply eating or drinking it. When you use garlic in food preparation it has the same constituents. One might see a bit more benefit raw, but it still has antibacterial and immune-boosting qualities. We need to think more about supporting health with good food. Even celery has medicinal qualities: raw, cooked, juiced etc. I've been teaching about herbs for over 40 years and am very excited to see the interest in natural health escalate. Mary Born. ND

Little tip regarding stinging nettles: when you have encountered their sting, carefully pluck a fresh leaf with your very fingertips and roll it/bruise it with your fingertips until it begins to release its juice. Then, rub the bruised leaf on your nettle stings to reduce the stinging & itching.

Hi Shaye, I live in the UK and I’m surrounded by stinging nettles, and another use can for them, is hayfever prevention, so ideally you need to get stung a few times by the nettles, as this in turn activates your natural antihistamines in your body, which in turn decreases hayfever symptoms. I do it by just pulling a few out with no gloves. Just another idea for your herb garden. 🪴 😊

Hey Shaye, just wanted to let you know I don't think that was stinging nettle that you held up. Nettle has opposite leaf pattern (Like elderberry) as opposed to alternate leaves. The one you held up looks like it has alternate leaves. It's hard to tell from far away so I may be wrong. I am an herbalist down in Gold Bar and we have tons of nettle :) Love the video!

I make oregano tea in the winter as well as pine needle tea. Parsley is a great antioxidant, and now that you mention it I will add it to the rotation! Thank you! I stuff my tea pot full with fresh oregano and pour boiling water over the top and steep for 5 min. I think its a fairly common tea in Spain and Italy. It is an acquired taste, but helps with cold relief and tastes better than oregano oil thats for sure.

Yes , I use herbs as medicine but not any special preparations . I use them as food in much higher quantities than just a seasoning . I only eat wild game for meat , nothing from a store and I make deer or blackbear chilis or stews or roasts and add tons of garlic , shallotts , oregano and parsley that I dry from my garden . The food becomes intensley flavorful and is much more medicine than just " dinner " . When you eat it you can feel the healing , as if its destroying any virus or 'bug' that might be trying to get ahold of you. It's truly magical how delicious it is. All the strong or bitter herbs and roots like oregano or garlic are super anti-viral and anti biotic in their effects. So dont worry about fancy concoctions , just start eating them alot more , like Fire Cider as a dressing on salad or rice , etc. Amazing !!! And remember the foods you already love , like pesto , eat more of it , it has everything potent in it , garlic , lemons , bitter greens like basil or any bitter green thing , Like italian parsley , kale , etc. And dried lambsquarters added to anything , green drinks , smoothies , soups , and chili flakes in everything you can will burn the germs away ❤ Skyval on a friend's computer( teresa's )

According to my new (to me) first edition of the Physician's Desk Reference for Herbal Medicines (thanks, Mom!), parsley plant and the parsley "fruit" parts are each used for herbal medicine. It says the herb is used "for flushing of the efferent urinary tract and for the prevention and treatment of kidney gravel. In folk medicine, it is used for gastrointestinal disorders, jaundice, kidney and bladder inflammation, as a diuretic and as an emmenagogue." It also cautions that pregnant women should not take therapeutic doses of parsley and definitely not therapeutic doses of the "fruit" of the parsley as it may cause miscarriage. 😮

Ok, I found 3 new ways to peel garlic. One separate the cloves from the bulb and stick them in a Drink mixer, like shaken not stirred type. Shake vigorously for 30-60 seconds. They get peeled ! The second was 2 metal bowls, place garlic cloves in side. Sandwich the bowls so you have 2 domes, making a circle ,holding tight and shake vigorously for 30-60 seconds. And the 3rd was using a small paring knife on a whole clove. ,carefully holding the clove ,jam the knife into the center of each of the cloves and do a half-moon motion outward. The clove will come right out !❤
