The Essex class aircraft carriers are the victorious ships of the US Navy. They were nicknamed the Masters of the Pacific: not a single ship of this class was lost in battle, despite several of them sustaining heavy damage.
With the introduction of aircraft carriers, naval warfare underwent a dynamic shift. Though navies may have been launching manned aerial vehicles from ships long before the appearance of what might considered a modern aircraft carrier, it wasn't until WWII that warplanes became synonymous with naval combat.
Naval Legends is a series about the construction, service, and daring deeds of legendary 20th-century ships.

Jokes aside tho, they didn't wreck the japanese fleet because of carrier spam. 60% of the entire Japanese fighting force in the pacific got their asses whooped by literally 3 aircraft carriers and their battlegroup, and that was the enterprise, yorktown, and the hornet. These 3 gave the americans the bang for their buck. The Essex class came in late. sadly tho, 2 of the yorktown-classes were sunk, leaving only the Enterprise, the most decorated ship of WW2.. It's a shame some retarded businessman sold her for scrap. If i can go back in time, i'd beat the living crap out of that idiot

Years ago, I think it was History Channel that ran a show called Battle 360 about the USS Enterprise. These little minidocs are shorter, but they offer more information, and more action than that show I was glued to many years ago. These are well done, Wargaming.

It would be great if Battle 360 could be updated with more modern CG and more attention to detail (instead of cookie cutter ships and planes). They could also add more information to each episode. Watching them again, it's as though 50% of each episode was review on what you've seen so far before this last commercial break. LOL

Zhang Michael No, not really. The kanji used for Kamikaze are 神風. 神 has only one meaning: God/deity. While 風 means wind, breeze, gale, sirocco, etc. Putting them together can really only give you "Divine wind", or literally translated, "Godly wind".
@zhangmichael1241
@zhangmichael1241 9 жыл бұрын
ThomSirveaux I do understand most of the characters' meaning in Japanese, however I think this is just minor problem that won't make much of a difference because "神風“ is more like a spiritual thing rather than literal meaning

ALTHOUGH, WOULD BE NICE IF THEY JUST SOLD THE SHIP AS AN OPTION! *Hint Hint* Im half joking but bundles with flags are kind of gimmicky considering there are now ample opportunities in game to earn flags. Ahhh CV-10, the USS Yorktown, such a familiar sight. Living in SC, I always enjoy it when I go to Charleston, crossing the bridge, and seeing the Yorktown in her permanent place on the Cooper River at Patriots Point. Always such a lovely sight to see

The SBD is Slow, But Deadly. That plane was the real IJN's back breaker. If an 'obsolete' plane could take out 30% of your ships in just one year, it's your problem. Forget the Helldiver, the Dauntless is the real deadliest dive bomber in the pacific(And would be more awesome if Yorktown-class aircraft carrier could have the Dauntless with 1000lb bomb in your game)
@caboosehelpsu2840
@caboosehelpsu2840 8 жыл бұрын
I disagree. the SBD simply had more chances to fight. by the time the helldiver came to play, the ijn air power was waning. And how did it take out 30%? through killing CVs? Again, there were more CVs available to fight, like during midway.
@GFTheWriter
@GFTheWriter 8 жыл бұрын
Fix that electrical problem first would be great, not everyone was OK with landing gear down when you open the bomb bay. And lots of pilot prefer the Dauntless over the Helldiver.
@MrChickennugget360
@MrChickennugget360 8 жыл бұрын
its because the SBD is slower and less survivable. it was certainly not "obsolete" since obsolete means no longer effective/competitive in combat. SB2D however is faster which is important in survivblity. SBDs were liked because they were stable in dive bombing, they were gradually transferred to secondary roles including anti-shipping which makes sense for high level of tonnage sunk. as an aside the Japanese D3A "Vale" sank the largest number of allied ships, so it must be a dive bomber thing.
@FawfulDied

SBDs were surprisingly effective in shooting down planes, as well. They served as screens against torpedo bombers until the carriers received enough fighters to take over the job.

Still, to this day, i think the Enterprise was, and still would be the champion of the pacific. Everyone who knew her entire story knows not even if the Essex class combine, none of them would be able to match the reputation of that legendary warship and her sister ships. She was respected and feared both ally and enemy alike and was literally called "The Grey Ghost" due to the fact that no matter how much she was badly damaged, for some reason she came back to action and delivered heavy blows to the enemy and the fact that the japanese saw her as unsinkable. THAT for me, is a true champion of the seas.

Essex can carry 100 planes and Unryū 65 planes, but Ikoma can carry 75 planes. (don't forget what if Japanese send the last version of their aircraft?)

The US Navy refused to accept the F4U Corsair because pilots could not see over the long nose for deck landing. It was handed to the Marines for land based operations only. The UK bought the F4U for use on its carriers. Royal Navy pilots developed the curved landing approach so they could keep the deck in view right to the last moment. Only then did the USN put Corsairs on the carriers.

No one seems to know of the proximity fused anti aircraft shell. On it's introduction to the 5inch dual purpose guns and the immediate increase in Japanese losses of aircraft a Japanese Admiral insisted he would destroy the US fleet with 500 planes and kamikaze piolets. Things went badly for the US but many more piolets were lost with there planes. The overall effort in making these fuses for shells and bombs was one of the great efforts of the conflict. The battle of the bulge was about as soon as they could be used against German troops. They tore many to shreds and Contributed greatly to that great victory too. Our vengeance weapon.

If not for the British Fleet Air Arm, the F4U Corsair wouldn't have played much of a role in aircraft carrier operations. Early F4U pilots couldn't see the flight deck, and the aircraft bounced on landing. Thus, early F4U users were shore-based USMC squadrons, such as VMF 214. Fleet Air Arm pilots, unwilling to put a 400 MPH fighter aircraft on shore, adopted a shallow turn approach that allowed pilots to see the flight deck. Landing bounce was solved by modifications, and the "Ensign Eliminator" was ready for the new Essex class aircraft carriers. As for F4F Wildcats, the Fleet Air Arm found ways to use this not-good-enough-to-fight-Messerschmitts aircraft on long range maritime/ASW patrol. F6F Hellcats came later to the Royal Navy, along with TBF Avengers.
