No matter what kick or 808 combination you are using, you need to EQ the frequencies regardless unless you are using a pre mixed sound that is already great quality. I wouldn't say don't do this, just make sure if you do then mix your kicks & 808's accordingly.

Great video as always. These are very important considerations to make, and they often get overlooked by newer engineers. However, I think the greatest thing about this video is how universal your first point is- That is to say, this philosophy could be applied to many different subgenres of hip-hop (ESPECIALLY lyrical hip hop where you need a lot of room for the vocals to breathe and shine through, as the lyrics are one of the most important aspects of more raw, underground, lyrical, substance driven hip hop). In trap, vocals are used more as an instrument. In more lyrical hip-hop (such as eastcoast/boombap), the rhyme scheme, vocabulary, and substance of the emcee's lyrics can often be more important than cadence and intonation.

Imo we all should know how Jdilla made beats cuz it gives you freedom to make beats which doesn´t sound old drummachine patterns. If own Maschine the best way is just learn to play with fingers and don´t mind if hats are late or any drum parts. You can quantize kick and snares if you want. It maybe sounds to someone weird cuz there is market full of beats made suing only loops or just clicking mouse. I try to avoid trainlike beats which goes same way and are always on beat. Cheers. Good video man!

To all producers. If you work on mixing and developing what is called headroom. You don’t need to reduce the pattern to being minimal. If you’re a novice at mixing, then yes I’d keep it simple. More than anything I’d just say make sure your patters compliment each other. If you’re going crazy with 808’s keep the kick, snare and HH’s more relaxed.

Some producers still want the complex 808 melody though, so if you don't want to get rid of complexity, you have to do other things to make room for it. You can still kidnap that fat kid if you take some of the groceries out of the trunk first to make sure he doesn't eat them. You can pan some of the groceries up to the front and out to the sides of the car. Position the fat kid in the middle so that his weight is distributed equally on the back tires. You can sidechain the fat kid and the fatty foods so that some level of waveform loudness will trigger a quick surgery on the fat kid every time both have to exist in the car at once. You can keep the whole fat kid if you dress him up real pretty and make an event of it.
@NavieD
@NavieD 3 жыл бұрын
I think a good framework is to keep balance in mind. If something is going to be complex like an 808 melody, you would likely have to simplify elsewhere

The 808 originally never generated bass guitar instrument sounds. You could tune the kick though for long sustained kick/bass combo though. Perplexing as to why you refer to the first example as an "808 bass" which is technically inaccurate. Just call is bass synth or something? Another trick is to make sure your kick does not sustain too much to interfere with the bass guitar or other low end instruments. If it does, then make sure they are tuned properly to not cause crazy freq harmonics.

Considering that every producer now uses lots of the same punchy 808s that are used excessively, I question the validity of the first point. Maybe, I'm not experienced enough yet to know when to use lots or fewer 808s , anyway, I appreciate the vedio overall .

I was more pointing out how there was absolutely no pauses between the 808s and they were very overwhelming. It was constantly playing - this can easily wear down the listener

Any place i can listen to more of your music? Ive only found 3 albums plus the MFP soundtrack. The 'electronic' songs youve made (or whatever the proper genre they classify into is) are always SO so good!!
