Look, I've done plenty of VBSS (Visit, Board, Search & Seizure) operations & worked with SEALs. VBSS boardings is a highly dangerous muneuver regardless of how good of a swimmer you are. Typically, there is a safety boat behind that will be there incase of a man overboard. LT. Zweig is absolutely right doesnt matter how badass you think you are it is a failure that someone thought a SEAL thought he could jump in a save their buddy with full kit, at night, in rough waters. Trust me SEALs CAN tread water & swim at a high level but falling overboard at night is basically a death sentence. Been in close calls myself we had my 2021 Middle East/Afghan withdrawal Deployment, we Marine Recon guy hit his head in a dawn VBSS op & he fell off the ladder our safety boat was luckily there to save him/we had nods on picked him up right away. That was definitely a failure on training & like Lt. Zweig said Too Much Can do WILL KILL.

Standards haven't DROPPED at all... but the training has CHANGED since 9/11. SEALS, after 9/11, had more of their training re-focused to ground warfare due to GWOT. Not a lot of terrorists in the ocean / sea, didn't make sense to heavily focus on ship boarding, beach / shore / dock incursions , etc. Reduced overall water training, more ground warfare / desert training. After GWOT ended, their training hasn't been re-calibrated yet to the best of my knowledge to focus on fundamentals pre-GWOT (which is unwise... considering the next war the US likely faces is in the Pacific... where SEALS will VERY much be needed with water skills).

That is insane, people have been drowning during amphibious operations for as long as we have been conduction them. Military brass always underestimating the risk, good reason to get the hell out. No amount of "training" can save you if your minimum combat load gives you negative buoyancy. It only takes about 9-10 lbs. of weight to sink a guy, with 70-90lbs you have no hope, even with a UDT. How does that pass the safety threshold for conducting an amphibious operation?

Trying to save a drowning person is probably the most dangerous thing to do!! They are grabbing you, trying to hold on to you, and they can take you down with them. It happened to a friend of mine in the Marines on a night dive, and my buddy trying to rescue him had to push away because our drowning friend was grabbing at his mask and his breathing apparatus and he had to push away from him and watch him sink when all he had to do was drop his waight belt.

The 18X program in the Army is plainly asinine. The graduates are too immature, inexperienced and usually very arrogant. In the old days you had to be E-5 promotable to go to selection(SFAS). The Seals have the same problem. The Navy ought to send potential Seal recruits over to the Marines or the Army for a three year combat arms enlistment. They should also be at least E-5 promotable when they are discharged. Problem solved.
@pogo1140Ай бұрын
Or they just require all applicants have a minimum 2 years in of service in a combat unit.
@RemoWilliams-jg4ybАй бұрын
Nail on the head my friend. It still blows my MIND why there are seals to begin with. The Marine Corps is the Naval Infantry component of the Navy. It should be the Marine Corps that supplies the commando element for the Navy, not the other way around, WITH the caveat that Sailors could come over and try out ala Navy Corps man, but have to go through our training. And to make matters worse, a Marine can cross deck over to Delta, but they can't attend buds to trend with a seal team or saunter off to Devgru for a few years, then come back and applie the training to infantry battalions. EVERYONE wins. Delta guys do it when the have to go back to big Army, or back to their old unit. They bring that knowledge with them. The Navy does not come from an infantry background, so a rustpicker goes to the seals but has no idea the SUCK of the big Army or Marine Corps and probably never marched a guy to chow. You have guys that have never had a weapon, and combine that with the EGO of the seal teams, and it just makes for a bad combonation. Coming from an infantry background and being an NCO for sometime brings maturity.

It reminds me of the scene in Blackhawk Down, when troops were leaving behind plates of their body armor due to weight and lack of mobility if they worn it. All due to the fact, they believed it was just another milk run, not taking the situation as seriously as it was.

The initial question that comes to mind is, how did does someone drown in 47 seconds, let alone a navy seal? Most people can hold their breath for around a minute atleast. Navy seals are suppose to be able to hold their breath for over 3m as the norm. 2nd question is yea, aren't they trained to cut their gear loose when a malfunction like this happens?
@michaelmurray6197Ай бұрын
This was the last time they were on the surface, they likely survived for longer underwater. And yeah they probably were trained to drop their equipment. But if a malfunction happened I'd bet the second guy decided to help out as they were going down. The problem that even experienced divers often don't think of is that buoyancy gets way worse the deeper you go. It's very easy to be dropping like a rock and get to a point where it's impossible to get back up in just a few minutes. Basically all the air gets compressed due to the pressure and so the deeper you go and the more compressed it gets the less water it displaces. Past a certain point even buoyancy devices reach the point where they would just drag you down even deeper because they don't offset their own weight. You would have to drop everything to go up, but you can't do that if you want to keep on breathing. But even that doesn't matter because the tanks you have likely don't have enough pressure to inflate your lungs and keep you breathing. And the pressure will make various chemicals inside your blood and body start to turn liquid and literally boil.

To your point: the old America was by and large a Godly nation, and God blessed it. As America has drifted away from Him and even gone so far as to say He’s a foolish idea, we’ve declined and now crossed the line into being openly judged by Him. America won’t come back until America comes back to the God who prospered us.

The biggest threat when you go overboard on a ship is the ships screws will suck you in.. besides the weight of all your gear taking you to the bottom.. if you go in.. you immediately kick off your boots/ release your utility belt and sling bag swim/push away from the ship.. a lot of gear is sitting at the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico from doing ship boardings ~USCG
