People don't like to hear the truth that their idols could be beaten by a 6'3" dude. It goes against their belief that basketball is a big man's sport.
@achiappanza
@achiappanza 2 ай бұрын
I'll take that one step further. When people judge the greatness of individual players, they always talk about defense being half the game. They also look at all the aspects of a player individually and how they make him the basketball equivalent of baseball's "five tool" players. But that thinking leads people to rank players based on a concept of how much they'd like to match up with the guy on the court *rather than* the total impact of the player on wins. Steph's defense, while never mistaken for perimeter shut-down quality, is good for what they ask him to do as part of TEAM defense. As long as a team is five players, true greatness should be judged by impact on a compatible team, not imaginary one-on-one.

But l have never seen a player draw so much attention and be so disruptive as soon as they cross half court. Hell when he is on one of his tears they pick him up 94’. Magic blows Curry outta water. It's not even close. When we discuss the top 5 players of all time, Magic is always a solid candidate. Curry OTOH has trouble cracking top 10. That's how big the gap is. Curry did NOT change the game. The league changed rules to water the defense down and let these wing players shine. That's what happened.

Hey bennysnickers I lov what you pointed out here about Steph and I agree with you! Now check out what I'm saying about Steph vs Magic, and let me know what you think? Here's the counter argument: Steph is much better scorer than Magic. Magic needed the help of a top 3 all time player (Kareem) for all 5 of his rings, while Steph won multiple rings without another top 75 player. Magic inherited a great team, Steph built a dynasty out of a bad side. Lakers had 3 no.1 picks (Kareem, Magic, worthy) and a no.4 pick (Scott), GS have a mid lottery, late lottery and 2nd round picks as its core. The magic version of a PG is now irrelevant largely bcs of Steph. In today's game he'd only be marginally better than Ben Simmons. Minus his defense. Notes1: He built a warriors dynasty out of nothing! With no top draft picks. And won two championships without a top 75 player. Notes2: If Curry had a Kareem type big, he'd easily surpass Magic's assists average. If Curry wasn't always the best shooter on the floor, he'd be forced to pass more. If we're going to compare a pass first PG best stats (assists), we have to compare a shoot first PG's best stats (scoring). Magic had zero gravity because Kareem was the real threat. Magic was amazing, but Kareem was even better. Kareem and Magic are both top 10 of all time players. Curry's best teammate was KD, for only 3 years, and KD isn't even top 10 of all time. Curry's next best teammate isn't even in the top 75 of all time. Also its important to note that Steph avg 9.0 Asst per game. Right before Steve Kerr became Coach.
@amirampeled
@amirampeled 7 ай бұрын
@@lynchone117 a lot of good points, except for the Magic Simmons comparison. That was disrespectful. But you're missing the whole picture. If you're arguing who's the best offensive player, than you'd be right. Curry is a better offensive player than Magic. I'd argue he's the GOAT offensive player. But Magic advantage in defense overtakes here. Magic, as a rookie, played center in a game 7 finals to win a chip, practically a game winner and FMVP. A few other points, teammates and championship don't matter as much in GOAT debates as individual accolades like MVPs, FMVPs and such. In a team perspective, curry and Durant is not such a huge underdog to Magic and Kareem. And pick numbers have nothing to do with strength of players, just means GS did a better job drafting. And even though Klay and Dray didn't make the top 75, they are arguably better than some players there, Klay definitely should have made it in. Now saying Curry built GS is a huge stretch. That is more Kerr and Bob Mayers than Curry. Just like Phil gets a lot of credit for Kobe and Jordan's rings. Having said all that they ARE close. I mean they are both top 10 and should be the undisputed top two PGs.

@@amirampeled no you missed my point about the magic/simmons I'm talking about defense and magic is not a good defender and never was period,he is no stopper one on one! And guys bring up that narrative every time like magic played center every time ,playoffs,reg.season games. That was just one game , so after the game he dominated so now all of a sudden hes this great defender,BS don't even insult my intelligence! Magic inherited a dynasty he was born with great Lakers teammates(HOFers) and had the best player at center too. Next you win championships with teammates period, Jordan is the only person I know of that won two of his chips without an all star player in 91 and 98. kzbin.info/www/bejne/aqvbompmhc-heZosi=GHRGUWlaPKwkOfmo I didn't even have to say because of Curry all of GWS success is attributed to him because " his coach steve kerr said it himself more than once" ,see I'm not dumb to what happened, With Steph personality,work ethic,openness to change none of their success happens he's the one that puts people in those seats,the jerseys sales,marketing, the owners went from nothing to the warriors worth over 5billion because of the Chef,people want to play with a winner, the owners took a gamble with him and won big for a kid with bad ankle, who could only shoot! Its Steph's team and it has been since that faithful day at MSG 54point outing! Once again like Kerr said you win with, all time great players and superstars those where his words not mine! This videos say it all why Curry is the Warriors their Success is because of him! Don't get it twisted why they have a Dynasty! He could have easily said no to KD comming to his team! kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y5LOeK2EprqJpbssi=nzeTZuhJvCvwsrq4 kzbin.info/www/bejne/aqvbompmhc-heZosi=GHRGUWlaPKwkOfmo

I think he totally deserves to be on the Mt. Rushmore and he is currently ranked #4-5 on my Top 10 List, kinda depends what day you ask me. One describtion I like to give about why Steph is so good, is that he has the most synergistic and complementary skill set I've ever seen. It's like god just gave him every single skill set it needs to enhance his shooting, and made him elite level. Accuracy, quick release, incredible handling, great balance, can take touch well, good pace, outstanding layup package, amazing passing, and conditioning that is probably unmatched. If you think about it, EVERY single skills of his is complementing his presence and magnificence of being the GOAT shooter. All of this leads to a player that actively influences and dictates the offense even when he doesn't have the ball, that's why for me personally, he still counts as a PG. The greatest ever, to be precise.

Going through all the comments as well as the video has me point out an aspe ct no one else has...Steph moves without the ball at a level rarely equaled....his ability to get open and re-locate contributes to his three point shooting. However, after years of watching the NBA and witnessing when the three point shot was introduced (I even remember when it was first done in the ABA), I had never seen the kinds of moves Steph makes to get off a three pointer....that is what I think really dazzled us all at first...then it was the crazy efficiency he achieved shooting from that far away.

The problem with this argument is that the modern NBA has virtually erased the lines between positions. A 6'11'' "five" led the NBA champions and was third in the league in assists last season. A 7'0" "four" has MADE more three-pointers in his career than Larry Bird ATTEMPTED. In 1980s/1990s parlance, Curry would be a two, no question; he has averaged 6.5 assists for his career, one more per game than Michael Jordan, whom no one would mistake for a point guard. Curry is listed as a PG primarily because Klay Thompson doesn't pass.

He's the only person in the top 10 under 6'6, so per in/lb he's probably the GOAT. 3. Unlike everyone else in the top 10, Curry has always been an underdog without any glaring gifts or talents his whole life. He basically dragged himself and his teams to the top through sheer will alone by playing the game his way. Add all this up, plus his humility, leadership, and tenacity, Curry is definitely someone that deserves to be looked up to and praised. I just pray he's able to get 2 more before he retires so he can shut the critics up. Here's my top 10 list: 1. Jordan 2. Kobe 3. Kareem 4. Magic 5. Duncan 6. Shaq 7. Bird 8. Curry 9. Lebron 10. IMO the old way of playing basketball, positioning of players, is over. It’s difficult to say who is best at what position when in this era, it’s about position-less basketball. If you want to go by labeling players to a specific position, then yes Magic is the man. But in current basketball, players like Steph are combo guards that revolutionized the game. Even the all star game is now voted in as “back court front count” rather then the old way of PG, SG, SF, PF, C Steph has changed an entire generation of how the game is played.

Calling Steph a point guard actually undersells him. He's more like an interplanetary force that chaotically orbits around the rest of the team. But he doesn't run the offense (seems like Draymond does more of that). Steph is my all-time favorite player (formerly it was Magic), imho he's the goat. But point guard? Nah, he's something way beyond that. And i agree with MJ, Magic is the best ever PG. Just my $.02 ...

Having two top five players of all time on one team makes it pretty easy to go to finals and win chips! As apposed to joining a 30 win team and helping to bring them up from the bottom! Sorry I'm back! I'm reading the comments and they turned my thoughts to the question of what makes you great or special. My answer was being able to do something like no one else can! Steph's overall basketball skills are amazing but his ability to shoot the basketball in a game built around shooting the basketball are on a level by themselves! Clearly backed up by his shooting numbers and percentages and the eye test! We all saw the 2022 All Star Game! No one else in the world is shooting from those distances, while making 16 and turning around from 36 feet! Best yet is 105 threes in a row! No one else in the world ever...if you disagree post the video! Lastly breaking the three point record in nearly half the amount of games and by the time he is done maybe putting the number out of reach...but records are meant to be broken...but it's going to be awhile and if the game shifts anywhere near back to the way it was...Impossible! Can Magic say anything like that? #unanimous30

First of all, they do not give Steph Curry the recognition he deserves. Yes, he is the goat. He can turn god mode on when crunched, he's humble, he can shoot from just about anywhere, & most of the NBA players has admitted to how hard it is to guard him. Yes, for the time magic was playing he was the goat pg for that era. But flash forward to now & you see kids going Curry crazy, adults going Curry crazy, everybody trying to throw them up like he do. More teams in the NBA are even relying more on 3 pointers now so it's crazy to even have this discussion. He don't have to prove himself to anyone cause he has arrived. He still the face of the NBA.

Great video! I think you hit the main points about how his shooting is ultimately more important than any other aspect of the game. What I have to add is that modern metrics are continually developing ways to identify the impact of players on team success, which of course devalues the importance of both traditional metrics (pts-reb-ast) as well as judging defense by the eye test. I think that unlike most players, whose greatness fades with time, Steph's going to be MORE appreciated as the analytics gurus show that he makes a greater impact on wins than people think today. And as you say, his impact on how people copy him. Even though you can't be a playmaking big man like Magic just because you want to, there were never a bunch of tall guys trying to like there is a world of people trying to shoot like Steph. I've been saying for a few years that he's better than Magic. Your video says that Magic's never made a statement, but I remember after the unanimous MVP someone asked Magic if Steph was better and he said, "If he keeps this up for a few more years, he will be." Well Steph's done it for far more than a few years. So Steph and Magic agree on that.

The Tim Duncan Spurs made the high ball movement, outside shooting offense feasible and proved it works in the NBA. THAT opened the door for Steph -- he's a product of Pop's system that Kerr brought to the Warriors. Doesn't mean he's not the greatest shooter ever, but he didn't single-handled reinvented the wheel. Also he doesn't really play defense much? Jordan and Kobe were DPOY winners and Magic was coming back hard on D every time. i don't mean to diminish Steph -- he is a great player, but we have to look a bit deeper than just pure scoring, because if that's the measure he's only 5th over the last 10 years (and James Harden is no1 -- that guy is on nobody's Mt Rushmore).

Those that think Magic didn't change the game don't understand where the league was when he joined the Lakers. Showtime opened up the court and took the ball out of the big man's hands. Sure, when things slowed down they went back to Kareem. Without Magic you don't get Steve Nash, J-Kid, White Chocolate, or even AI. The challenge for what Magic did was that you needed extreme skills in passing, reading, and handling to do what Magic did. Curry, on the other hand changed the game in a much more democratic way. Anyone can learn to shoot, regardless of athletic ability, handles, or ability to read the defense. But change the game he did. What followed was an army of shooters and something even more important. Coaches started putting in schemes and plays just to get a spot up 3 point shooter a shot. So thank Reggie and Ray for this too. Curry just made everyone hyper aware of the advantage of doing this. Magic is the better point guard and helped save the NBA with Larry (and Michael). But Curry has had a much bigger impact on how the game is played because he reminded everyone they could also be a Ray or a Byron, a Reggie or a Korver if they just practiced shooting. In Curry's NBA the spot up shooters have much more of an impact because plays are being run for them out of nearly every set, even if it's the off action. That's huge. And there are a lot more 6' 3" shooters running around than there are 6' 9" ball handlers, even today. So Magic wins the goat but Curry has changed the game more.

@johnt2831
@johnt2831 7 ай бұрын
First off, I do not truly think that you know what a point guard is. The average height of a point guard is 6'2 1/2 . What is magic Johnson's height? 6'9 That is far beyond what a point guard is supposed to be. Which means that he was taking on guys much smaller than he. By the way, Magic Johnson 6'9", 220 lbs • Lakers • PG PPG 19.5 RPG 7.2 APG 11.2 FG% 52.0 Magic Johnson won five NBA championships with the Los Angeles Lakers in the 1980s12. He played alongside several legendary basketball players during his career. Some of the notable players who were part of the Lakers’ championship-winning teams include: Kareem Abdul-Jabbar: A Hall of Fame center who played with Magic Johnson for several seasons and won five championships together1. James Worthy: A small forward who was an integral part of the Lakers’ success in the 1980s, winning three championships alongside Magic Johnson1. Byron Scott: A shooting guard who played alongside Magic Johnson and won three championships with him3. Michael Cooper: A versatile guard/forward who played a key role in the Lakers’ championship runs, winning five championships with Magic Johnson3. Kurt Rambis: A power forward known for his toughness and rebounding skills, Rambis won four championships playing alongside Magic Johnson3. These are just a few examples of the talented players who contributed to Magic Johnson’s championship success. There were many other players who played important roles in the Lakers’ championship teams during that era Keep in mind that he had all of those top notch players. Now I am not saying that Steph didn't have KD, however, Steph also won without KD. In fact, the year that the Warriors were up 3-1 on the Cavs, and the Cavs came back to beat the Warriors, all of you seem to forget why LeBron and company were able to complete the comeback. Yes, conveniently you all seem to leave out the most important parts of the reason. The Golden State Warriors had a few injuries during the 2016 NBA Finals against the Cleveland Cavaliers. The most notable injury was to their star point guard, Stephen Curry. He suffered a sprained knee in the first round of the playoffs against the Houston Rockets, which kept him out for nearly two weeks. After returning, he also suffered from ankle and elbow injuries, which limited his performance 1. In addition to Curry’s injury, Andre Iguodala was also struggling with a nagging back injury during Game 6 of the Finals and left the game early 2Andrew Bogut was ruled out for the rest of the season after suffering a knee injury in Game 5 2. Despite these injuries, Golden State was just minutes away from winning their second consecutive championship. However, Cleveland’s LeBron James made an epic chasedown block against Andre Iguodala in Game 7, which helped clinch the championship for the Cavaliers My point is that Steph would have 5 chips if not for the injuries. Also, Steph being 6'2 and 185lbs also makes him the best because of what he does. Nobody can guard this guy. He is constantly running around. He makes other players better. I can say that he averaged more points than magic, and his career isn't over yet. He can still get more MVPs. Magic only has one more than Steph. Keep in mind the year that Andre Iguodala won finals MVP, a lot of people felt that Steph was the true MVP. So Steph would have 2 finals MVPs right now. Steph Curry is also the only player in history to have 100% of the vote for league MVP. Steph Curry is the best player period. Not just point guard, but player.

His first ring was won playing all 5 positions in game 6 when Kareem went down injured. He had the higher FG % than Kareem in those playoffs. Only in your delusional mind would a rookie Curry step in to do that in the NBA Finals and win it without Kareem. Tell us how do all those Lakers legends Magic played with helped him shoot a CAREER 52% FG? His Assist/game is still the highest in NBA history. He still has the most triple-double for a PG in NBA playoff history. ALL THOSE LEGENDS ON HIS TEAM yet he's the one with 3 Finals MVP over the great Kareem Abdul Jabaar. The term Showtime is forever synonymous to Magic. You think Byran Scott, Worthy, Cooper, and so on could've ran the Lakers the way Magic did? Magic evolved his game every summer to a point he became unplayable by the time he was 27 years old. His low-post game when he played PF was great for the second unit whenever Kareem was subbed out for a breather. It's so obvious that you didn't watch enough of those Lakers run. Sure, Magic might be the Point guard GOAT because of his unique size and skill for the position, but he played to his strengths and did not change the game for those of lesser physical characteristics. Curry, on the other hand, lacks the size and skill for the position,¿that Magic's era required, but the skill set now required makes being a Curry-type point guard more possiible for more players of his size. Magic played the position the best a it could have been played in his era, but Curry revolutionized every facet of the game during his era...and beyond. Bottom line: Magic could not have had the success he had if he played on the current Dubs teams, and Curry could not have had the success he is having if he played on Magic's Lakers teams. Different eras, different games, different skills required.
