Residents outraged after police officer shoots, kills small dog

Sturgeon, Missouri, residents are speaking out about safety after a Sturgeon Police Department officer shot and killed a 13-pound blind Shih Tzu mix. The dog’s owner shared video of a confrontation with officer after the dog was killed. KOMU’s Siobhan Harms reports.

You are absolutely correct. The trouble is that it's obvious that the vast majority of these municipalities have lots of trouble finding qualified officers. It seems that the policy is hire what they consider to be qualified candidates for the job but It's quite obvious that not all of them will work out. The sad part is that it takes an officer shooting a person or an animal without justifiable cause before we find out that the officer is not qualified to be on the job... You can't put the Genie back in the bottle after something like this... Like that rogue cop in Louisville Kentucky who arrested World's #1 Golfer who was simply just trying to get to work for the morning, you just don't know how bad these cops are until they do something stupid...

Don't let your blind, and deaf dog off a leash that is sick, and injured.

In the officers defense the dog was wandering around without supervision and appeared to be sick. There is no cure for rabies if he believed the dog was a danger to the community and there was no animal control in the town he had the responsibility to handle the situation. If the dog did have rabies and bite another animal or child would you still think his action was unwarranted? I would not expect the officer to risk his life to catch the dog one bite or scratch from an animal carring Rabies could be a death sentence. This is on the dogs owners they had a responsibility to keep the dog safe it was blind it could have wandered out in traffic and caused an accident then who would have been at fault?

🕵 According to posted body cam footage, he tried for about 3 minutes to catch Teddy with a noose that was too small so it was hard to put over the dog's head. It’s much worse on the Bodycam. You can watch the Bodycam on KMIZ ABC 17 News….. Bodycam video shows Sturgeon dog shooting. The cop spent less than ONE MINUTE before you can hear the gun shot. The poor dog looked like he was walking towards the sound of a voice. Not acting crazy like everyone is saying. He shoots the dog and walks away like nothing happened. It’s so sad.

We live on 42 acres and we let our three dogs run off leash virtually every day; however, we supervise them. We have to make a brief 15-ish minute drive to the nearest one. Retired LEO. This makes me sick and ashamed. This “person “ is not a cop. He’s a coward and a bully. When I was a rookie fresh out of the academy I went out with a training officer. We were at an abandoned house and was approached by two dogs, non threatening, well fed with collars. Obviously not strays. I was told to shoot the dogs. I refused. He said “that’s what you’re here for “. I returned to our vehicle and eventually he did too. He was fine with me shooting but he didn’t. We returned to the office and the incident was reported to the chief. After hearing both sides he said I acted accordingly and he fired the so called senior officer. Things were different 50 years ago.

Honestly, from the full clip I've seen, it's more like the officer couldn't be bothered. He was trying to get the dog with one of those dog catcher lassos. The dog, being blind and deaf, could only feel something touch him, so he kept moving away from it. The cop could clearly see the dog wasn't a threat. He could've quite easily picked the dog up if he took the time and handled the task properly.

Also I haven’t seen any evidence of the caller explicitly stating the dog wasn’t a threat, only that it was injured. My first reaction was anger towards the officer, but now it’s also anger towards the irresponsible owner who is now playing the victim role.

For those of you who HAVEN'T seen the bodycam footage of when he shot the poor dog......trust me when I say it's WAY WORSE than you think in terms of COMPLETE AND UTTER SENSELESSNESS (for sensitive dog lovers, I recommend you not watch it....the moment he executes the dog is gutwrenching since it was 100% unnecessary of a shooting). It took place out in a field - at first the officer tried to catch the dog, but then after failing to do so, he just whipped out his revolver and senselessly SHOT the poor thing twice at close range. You're probably thinking...."oh, well there had to be some element where the dog was acting at least somewhat aggressive and threatening the officer, and THAT IS WHY he shot the dog." Nothing could be further from the truth. Dog was just harmless walking around, and suddenly "officer EXECUTIONER" shot him twice, then got a bucket and dropped him in it as if he was taking out the trash.
